GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following the ninth week of the 2019 women's soccer season. Grand Valley State senior midfielder Riko Sagara earned GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week accolades, while Ferris State senior goalkeeper Alison Chesterfield claimed GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Riko Sagara, Grand Valley St.
No. 2 Grand Valley State senior midfielder Riko Sagara had two goals and four assists during a dominant 2-0 road weekend to clinch at least a share of the GLIAC regular season championship. Sagara provided an assist on the second goal of a 2-0 win at No. 11 Ashland Friday night to give the Lakers breathing room as they secured sole possession of first place in the league. She was then a vital piece of the 10-0 rout of Saginaw Valley State on Sunday, scoring twice – including on a penalty – and dishing three assists. The lone senior on the 15-1 Lakers is playing her best soccer of the season at the perfect time with post-season looming. GVSU also clinched the 1-seed in the GLIAC Tournament this weekend, giving them the right to host the entire tournament.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Alison Chesterfield - Ferris State
Ferris State University senior goalkeeper Alison Chesterfield led the Bulldogs to a 4-0 shutout win over Northwood in non-league action on Sunday in Midland. Chesterfield played all 90 minutes in net and recorded the shutout victory with seven saves in the first of back-to-back matchups against the Timberwolves. The shutout was her fourth of the year and enabled the Bulldogs to notch their school single-season record 12th shutout this campaign.
