GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly awards following the opening weekend of the 2018-19 women's basketball season. Michigan Tech junior guard Baillie McGirk earned GLIAC Women's Basketball North Division honors, while Grand Valley State junior center Cassidy Boensch captured South Division accolades.
NORTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Baillie McGirk - Michigan Tech
Michigan Tech junior guard Baillie McGirk and an incredible start to the season, pouring in a career high 29 points in Tech's season opening 96-65 win over Ursuline Friday night night. She knocked down 68.8% of her shots Friday and combined to convert 61.9 percent of her field goals and 66.7% from three-point range over the course of two days. In addition to her point totals, McGirk was very effective in every other facet of the game. She combined for nine rebounds, six assists, four steals, and had a blocked shot in the two games.
SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Cassidy Boensch - Grand Valley State
Grand Valley State junior center Cassidy Boensch helped the No. 13 Lakers to two wins over Maryville and Missour-St. Louis. Boensch went 11-for-12 from the field against UMSL, scoring 24 points while pulling down six rebounds in an 87-44 victory. She then recorded a double-double in a 74-50 win against Maryville after scoring 18 points and pulling down 15 boards. For the week, Boensch averaged 21.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game while shooting 70.8 percent on 17-of-24 shooting.
