GVSU Lakers Sweep GLIAC Indoor Track Week 6 Honors

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly awards following the sixth weekend of the 2017-18 indoor track and field season. In women's competition, Grand Valley State junior Rachael Walters earned GLIAC Track Athlete of the Week honors for the second time this year, while GVSU freshman pole vaulter Elli Kimes captured GLIAC Field Athlete of the Week accolades for the second straight week. On the men's side, Grand Valley State senior Wuoi Mach earned GLIAC Track Athlete of the Week distinction, while GVSU sophomore Jacob Battani captured GLIAC Field Athlete of the Week recognition. The Lakers swept the weekly conference awards for the second time this season.


WOMEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Rachael Walters, Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State junior Rachael Walters had a excellent weekend at the Meyo Invitational this weekend in the 800m run, as she set a new personal best after she captured an NCAA automatic mark of 2:06.41. Walters’ blazing time was the second best time regardless of division, and now has the best time in the conference and in Division II.


WOMEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Elli Kimes, Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State freshman pole vaulter Elli Kimes seized her second straight GLIAC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week award after she hit a provisional mark and cleared 3.82m (12' 6.25") in the pole vault, and claimed first place at the Hillsdale Wide-Track Classic. Kimes retains the best mark set in the GLIAC and holds the ninth best clearing in Division II this season.


MEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Wuoi Mach, Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State senior Wuoi Mach had a stellar performance this weekend at the Meyo Invitational, as he set a personal best in the 3,000 meter race and broke an GVSU men’s indoor record of 8:05.19, after he hit an NCAA automatic time of 8:04.81, which was the fifth best time regardless of division. In addition, Mach now holds the best conference time in the 3,000 meter race and the third best time in Division II.


MEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Jacob Battani, Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State sophomore Jacob Battani had a top performance this weekend in the pole vault during the Hillsdale Wide-Track Classic this weekend, as he hit an NCAA provisional mark of 5.12 meters (16’ 9.5”), en route to a first place finish at the meet. Battani now has the best mark in the GLIAC and the fourth best mark in Division II.
