GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly awards following the fifth weekend of the 2018 outdoor track and field season. In women's competition, Grand Valley State junior Rachael Walters earned GLIAC Track Athlete of the Week honors, while Ashland junior Mackenzie Leigh captured GLIAC Field Athlete of the Week accolades. On the men's side, Tiffin University's James Ngandu earned GLIAC Track Athlete of the Week distinction, while Tiffin sophomore Jalon Monigan captured GLIAC Field Athlete of the Week recognition.
WOMEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Rachael Walters, Grand Valley State
Grand Valley State junior Rachael Walters had another strong performance for the Lakers this past weekend as she ran an NCAA automatic time of 2:06.56 in the 800m run during the Bryan Clay Invitational. Walters, who finished 10th overall regardless of division, now holds the fifth fastest time in Division II and the best time in the GLIAC.
WOMEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Mackenzie Leigh, Ashland
Ashland junior Mackenzie Leigh garnered her initial GLIAC award after placing third in the women’s hammer throw championship division at the Jesse Owens Track Classic at The Ohio State University on Friday (April 20). Leigh’s top heave of 58.60 meters/192-feet-3 is the best in the GLIAC in the event this spring, and is eighth-best in NCAA Division II this season.
MEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - James Ngandu, Tiffin
Tiffin University's James Ngandu left his mark on the 5000 meters, hitting an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 13:47.92 while finishing 18th at the Mt. SAC Relays in California. His time is the second best time in the NCAA in the 5K this season, while also the top mark in the GLIAC.
MEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Jalon Monigan, Tiffin
Tiffin sophomore Jalon Monigan also enjoyed his California trip, posting the top mark in the NCAA in the triple jump at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa, California. His distance of 15.98 meters (52-5.25) earned a second place finish overall and is also an automatic qualifying mark. The leap is also the best in the GLIAC this season.
