INDIANAPOLIS – The Wayne State men's swimming and diving team recorded two more runner-up finishes during Day 2 of the 2019 NCAA Division II Championships at the IUPUI Natatorium.
The Warriors' 200 freestyle relay team of Ryan Katulski, Sasha Palazzo, Stewart Nowinski and Franz Mueller placed second in 1:18.79. Dima Drobnych, Palazzo, Rasmus Olsen and Katulski were also second in the men's 400 medley relay with a time of 3:10.24.
WSU broke the former Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference 200 freestyle relay record of 1:18.89 that the Warriors set in 2015.
WSU's medley relay finished behind Queen's College (3:08.15). The Grand Valley State foursome of Harry Shalamon, Martus Mikalouskas, Gabriel Souza and Ben Walling was third in 3:12.42.
The GVSU men's 200 freestyle relay team of Souza, Walling, Shalamon and J.D. Ham was sixth in 1:20.34. The WSU women's 400 medley relay team of Ashlen Michalski, Jia YiKoh, Julia Brunner and Lezlie Bueno Estrada was fifth in 3:44.48.
The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference had two strong representatives in women's 1-meter diving. GVSU's Mikayla Karasek placed fourth with 447.25 points, while WSU's Amanda Hurchalla was fifth with 443.25.
Wayne State's Joao Ribeiro finished sixth in the men's 400 individual medley with a time of 3:51.44, while GVSU's Keegan Hawkins was seventh in 3:52.77. Emily Marginean of Wayne State was also seventh in the women's finals with a time of 4:20.48.
Souza took sixth in the men's 100 butterfly (:47.27), and GVSU's Melina Goebel was eighth in the women's 200 freestyle (1:51.76).
Competition continues through Saturday at IUPUI.
