BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The top-seeded and No. 2 nationally-ranked Ferris State Bulldogs have won the 2018 NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Midwest Region Championship on Tuesday (March 13) night after taking down a former Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe in the Findlay Oilers by a final score of 80-65 inside Jim Wink Arena on the campus of Ferris State University.
FSU advances to next Tuesday's (March 20) NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Elite Eight scheduled in Sioux Falls, South Dakota inside the Sanford Pentagon. After the regional winners were reseeded, Ferris State earned the No. 1 overall seed and will face-off against No. 8 seeded Barry who earned the South Region title as the No. 7 seed.
Ferris State jumped out to an early double-digit lead and held a nine-point edge at the break before Findlay fought back in the second half to take a slim advantage. With the contest tied up at 59 all with 5:16 to play, the Bulldogs proceeded to finish the contest on a 21-6 run to earn the 2018 NCAA Division II Midwest Region Championship in front of a sell-out crowd of 2,434 in Wink Arena. FSU dominated Findlay on the glass by a 49-35 margin while holding the Oilers to sub-40 percent shooting in the win. FSU senior Drew Cushingberry poured in a game-high 21 points on 6-of-8 shooting, while DeShaun Thrower recorded 20 points on 7-for-12 shooting including some big shots in the final five minutes. GLIAC Player of the Year Zach Hankins also scored 12 points and pulled down 12 boards to go with three blocks as the Bulldogs are headed to Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
