BAY CITY, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State University sophomore quarterback Jonathon Jennings (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville South) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) "Offensive Player of the Week" after completing 19-of-27 passes for 327 yards and four touchdowns, while adding 38 rushing yards and another score in the Cardinals' 44-41 road win at Michigan Technological University last Saturday. Ohio Dominican sophomore defensive back Justin Bell (Columbus, Ohio/Groveport Madison) earned "Defensive Player of the Week Honors," while Saginaw Valley State University freshman kicker Scott Stanford (Novi, Mich.) was tabbed "Special Teams Player of the Week."
Ashland - Senior defensive end Matt Stoinoff (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) scored the first touchdown of his career when he returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown at Tiffin. The interception was the second of Stoinoff’s career…Stoinoff’s score came just 1:09 into the game. That marked the first points the Eagles had scored in the first quarter this season. AU put up 21 first quarter points at Tiffin…junior slot back Justen White-Reid (Akron, Ohio/Copley) rushed for a career-high 119 yards on 13 carries (9.2 ypc.) with two touchdowns at Tiffin... The Eagles rolled up a season-high 590 yards of total offense last week…the 57-point margin of victory at Tiffin is the fourth most in school history. The point total is the second highest in school history, trailing only the 87 points AU scored against Lake Erie last season…junior defensive back Donnie Dottei (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) picked off two passes at Tiffin and has a team-high three for the season.
Ferris State - A strong first half fueled the University of Findlay to a 43-35 victory over the Ferris State Bulldogs in GLIAC action on Saturday (Oct. 8) afternoon at Donnell Stadium in Findlay, Ohio. The Oilers bolted out to a 22-0 halftime advantage and held off a valiant Bulldog comeback in the fourth quarter to end Ferris’three-game winning streak... Findlay led 36-14 with 13:32 to go in the game before FSU trimmed the margin to a single score with only 30 seconds left on a one-yard scoring run from senior quarterback Tom Schneider (Jerome/Addison). However, a final onside kick attempt by the Bulldogs was recovered by Findlay as the Oilers preserved the victory... Schneider paced FSU with 258 passing yards and three touchdowns on 29-of-39 attempts... Junior linebacker Mike Elias led FSU with 11 tackles while junior defensive end Jordan Morgan posted 10 stops and had 1.5 sacks. He also had a blocked kick, a forced fumble, fumble recovery and recovered an onside kick.
Findlay - The Oilers defeated Ferris State, 43-35, Saturday to even their record at 3-3 on the season. Junior RB Monterae Williams registered a season-high 29 carries for 170 yards on the ground, scoring three touchdowns. He also caught one pass for 43 yards and a score. Freshman QB D.J. Marrah, who entered the game in the first quarter in relief of injured starter Clay Belton, completed 6-of-10 passes for 116 yards and two scores. He also ran 14 times for 85 yards and a touchdown... Senior DB Isaiah Ballard registered a career-high 17 tackles in the win. On the season, Williams has rushed for 811 yards and 11 touchdowns. He is averaging 135.2 rushing yards per game and 5.8 yards per carry. The Oilers are averaging 243.5 rushing yards per game on the year.
Grand Valley State - Grand Valley State sophomore quarterback Heath Parling (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) tossed five TD passes for the second straight game at Northern Michigan and has now accounted for 11 Tds in the last two games. Parling has completed 28-of-38 passes for 487 yards and 10 Tds the last two games and has a pass efficiency rating of 270.81…Jovonne Augustus caught four passes (69 yards), all of which went for touchdowns, in Grand Valley State’s 42-7 victory over Northern Michigan Saturday. Augustus set a Superior Dome record with his four TD receptions that covered 4, 18, 42 and 5 yards. The previous record of three was held by Jeremy Wilkinson (NMU), Vincent Mayfield (NMU), Fred Wells (NMU), Eric Fowler (GVSU) and Dustin Brancheau (NMU). Augustus is the first Laker to catch four TD passes in a game since David Kircus caught four versus C.W. Post in the 2002 NCAA playoffs. Augustus has 16 receptions on the year, eight for touchdowns…The Grand Valley State defense has allowed 17 total points in the last 10 quarters.
Hillsdale - The Hillsdale College football team
saw a number of winning streaks snapped in its 43-42 loss to Ohio
Dominican University Saturday…It snapped the team’s
four-game winning streak, 16-game home winning streak and
eight-game homecoming winning streak…This game was also the
third time in school history, and second time in two years, where
the Chargers scored 40 or more points in a game and lost…The
Chargers are 0-2 when they score first in a game this season, and
are 4-0 where their opponent scores first…Junior RB Joe
Glendening set a career-high for the second week in a row with 262
rushing yards…He scored four rushing touchdowns, including a
career-long 80 yard score in the fourth quarter…He also
caught a 66-yard pass for a touchdown, and finished with 334 total
yards…He has 21 total touchdowns through six games and is
averaging more than 164 rushing yards per game, both number one in
the GLIAC…He has 54 more points than anyone else in the
conference, and ranks fourth in school history with 2,639 career
Indianapolis - UIndy (4-2, 3-3) earned its first road win of the season with a convincing 38-7 victory at Northwood…The Greyhounds have scored at least 34 points in five of six games this year and rank fourth in the GLIAC in scoring (35.0)…Last Saturday, the UIndy defense notched its first three-interception game since week four of 2010. Sophomore CB Jerrett Ban (Roachdale, Ind.) secured two of the picks and now has a team-high three on the season…Junior WR Mar’Quone Edmonds (Waukegan, Ill.) caught three TD passes at Northwood. He has 12 TD receptions on the season, good for a new school record…Sophomore QB Chris Mills (Lafayette, Ind.) recorded his third 300-yard passing game of the season by completing 25-of-34 attempts for 312 yards and four touchdowns at NU. He has yet to throw a pick this season... UIndy remains the only team in Division II that has yet to commit a turnover in 2011.
Lake Erie - Lake
Erie rushed for a season-high 224 yards against Wayne State.
Freshman Rodney Smith, making his first start, led the way with 87
yards on 17 carries. Sean Bedevelsky ran for 45 yards on 10
carries and scored a touchdown for the fourth time in five
games. It was his 20th career rushing touchdown, becoming the
first Storm player to reach that mark. Bedevelsky also completed
17-of-31 passes for 169 yards and a pair of TDs and has thrown 117
consecutive passes without an interception. Aaron Lindgren (3
rec, 52 yards; 4 rush, 48 yards) caught a 21-yard TD pass for his
first collegiate score.
Michigan Tech - Michigan Tech had its seven-game
home winning streak snapped by Saginaw Valley State 44-41 in
overtime last Saturday …The game was the first overtime game
for the Huskies since the 2007 season opener at Winona State (a
47-44 Tech loss) … Quarterback Tyler Scarlett (Clarkston,
Mich.) improved his previous passing high by 158 yards by throwing
for 381 and two touchdowns vs. Saginaw. The freshman had 389 yards
of total offense and three total TDs on the day … Senior
Steve Worthy (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) hauled in seven passes
for 151 yards last Saturday including a 42-yard reception to set up
a game-tying field goal as time expired. Worthy also scored on a
punt block … Freshman kicker Garrett Mead (Alpena, Mich.)
kicked two field goals to tie the game in the final two minutes vs.
SVSU. He made a 28 yarder with 1:59 left to make the score 38-all,
then drilled a 37-yarder as time expired to send the game to
overtime at 41-all.
Northern Michigan - Grand Valley defeated the Wildcats 42-7 in the Superior Dome…NMU has now lost 11 straight to the Lakers…NMU is now 3-3 overall and 2-3 in the GLIAC…GVSU set two new Superior Dome Records as Jovonne Augustus had four touchdown receptions and Erik Thompson had a 95-yard interception return for a touchdown…It was the first time this season Carter Kopach didn’t throw a touchdown pass…The Wildcat offense finished the game with 382 yards (259 passing and 123 rushing)…Kopach finished 25-for-45 through the air and had 66 yards rushing…Prince Young had 53 yards on the ground and scored the lone NMU touchdown.
Northwood - Northwood dropped its fifth straight game Saturday, falling to Indianapolis 38-7 ... the Timberwolves are now 1-5 overall, 0-5 in the GLIAC ... sophomore running back Cameron Jackson (Dahlonega, Ga./Lumpkin) scored NU’s touchdown in the game, a two-yard run in the second quarter to make the score 10-7 ... Ryan Whittum (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) had eight tackles to pace the Timberwolves defense ... NU played the game without two captains, as Aaron Shavers (Detroit, Mich./Inkster) and Spencer Remtema (Rockford, Mich.) were unable to play.
Ohio Dominican - Ohio Dominican dealt No. 22 Hillsdale its first home loss since 2008, rallying from a 21 point deficit to stun the Chargers 43-42 on Hillsdale’s Homecoming…The win was ODU’s first over a ranked opponent since the Panthers played in the NAIA playoffs in 2007…ODU trailed 21-0 in the second quarter and 42-30 with 2:40 left before coming back for the victory…Justin Bell returned a fumble for a touchdown with 2:29 left, marking the first defensive score by a Panther since 2007…Jeremy Fudge accounted for all of ODU’s offense in the final two minutes, completing 2-of-2 passes for 34 yards and running twice for 36 yards, including the go-ahead TD. He threw for 184 yards and ran for 138 yards one year after rushing for 144 yards against the Chargers…Tyler Purcell had a career-high 121 yards receiving…ODU forced six Hillsdale fumbles and recovered three of them.
Saginaw Valley State - SVSU rebounded after a tough loss to Hillsdale to beat #21 Michigan Tech and the seventh best defense in Division II by a score of 44-41 in overtime to improve to 4-1 overall on the season and sit atop the GLIAC North standings. The Cardinals would rack up 467 yards of total offense and 44 points against MTU. QB Jonathon Jennings would finish the game 19-of-27 passing for 327 yards passing and four touchdowns through the air, he would also add 38 yards rushing and a score on the ground. He completed six passes of 20-yards or more on the afternoon including a touchdown passes of 70 yards and 49 yards. In two career starts against the Huskies, Jennings is 37-of-48 for 533 yards and five passing touchdowns... Freshman P/PK Scott Stanford became the first Cardinal place kicker since 2008 to make three field goals in a game. He set a career long with his first kick attempt of the afternoon, converting on a 45-yarder with :53 seconds left in the first half. Stanford would also convert on all five of his extra point attempts and record three touchbacks, giving him four this season.
Tiffin - Tiffin University (0-6, 0-5 GLIAC) were unable to cage the Eagles of Ashland University (4-2, 4-1) at the 2011 Homecoming football game, as the Eagles scored in every quarter en route to a 70-13 victory. Dan Pitts came in at quarterback after a James Capello injury and finished with 302 yards through the air on 30 of 53 passing and 2 touchdowns while also taking 2 sacks. Marcus Beaurem led the receivers with 88 yards on 7 catches while Obadiah Dykes also had another solid game with 71 yards on 4 receptions…Brendton Williams accounted for 155 all-purpose yards, including 117 return yards. Ten different Dragons caught passes in the game.
Wayne State - Wayne State extended the nation’s longest winning streak to 10 games (shared with Colorado State-Pueblo and Washburn) on a record-setting day for junior quarterback Mickey Mohner (Painesville, Ohio/Harvey) against his hometown school ... Mohner passed for a school record 439 yards, while tying the pasing touchdown mark with five ... in addition to completing four third down passes, 15 of his completions went for at least 10 yards ... Mohner’s passing efficieny rating for the game was 297.40 ... senior wide receiver Troy Burrell (Port Huron, Mich.) had eight receptions for 210 yards, the fourth-most in school history, and three scores... head coach Paul Winters tied the WSU mark for career coaching victories at 42 with Joseph G. Gembis (1932-45) ... Winters’ .519 winning percentage (42-39) ranks second all-time behind Hall of Fame coach Richard Lowry... the 2011 seniors are one win away from tying the 1974-77 class (30 wins) as the all-time winningest class in Wayne State history.
