BAY CITY, Mich. - Grand Valley State University senior outfielder Steve Anderson (Northville, Mich.) and senior pitcher Cory Baker (Byron Center, Mich./North Dakota) have been chosen as the GLIAC Baseball "Player of the Week" and "Pitcher of the Week", respectively.

Grand Valley State
6-2, Senior OF
Anderson hit .419 for the team’s first 10 games with 15 RBI
and nine extra base hits. Anderson has compiled two homeruns, three
triples and four doubles. He is slugging .791, has a .457 on-base
percentage and hit .462 with runners in scoring position. Anderson
set a career-high with six RBI against West Virginia Wesleyan, when
he went 3-3 with three runs scored, six RBI and was a home run
short of the cycle.

Cory Baker went 2-0 and
didn’t surrender an earned run 14.0 innings striking out 16
while only walking two without giving up an earned run. Baker threw
five shutout innings, allowing only one hit while striking out
seven to earn the win in his debut against Bellarmine. He made his
first start against Notre Dame College, getting the victory by
throwing six innings, allowing four hits, no earned runs and
striking out six.

2012 "Pitchers of the Week": (3/14) Cory Baker - GV.
The Eagles were 6-5 last week at the Russ Matt Invitational in central Florida for their annual spring break trip. AU won five of its first six games on the trip before dropping four of the last five games. Junior Austin Erb (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) hit .459 (17-for-37) on the trip with a team-high 12 RBI and a .545 on-base percentage. He also tied for the team high with four doubles. Freshman right-hander Zach Wolfe made four appearances on the mound for the Eagles and had a team-best 1.20 ERA in 15.0 innings pitched. He tossed seven shutout innings against Wheeling Jesuit, scattering six hits and striking out two. Senior right-hander Aaron Hilt (Richmond, Ohio/Edison) made a team-high three starts in Florida and went 2-1 with a 4.50 ERA. He struck out 12 in 16.0 innings pitched. The Eagles hit .306 as a team and compiled a 3.78 team ERA. AU hosts Malone for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday in its home opener.
Findlay started the season 4-4 and
has a weekend series with Walsh coming before GLIAC play starts at
Wayne State on the 24th.
Grand Valley State Lakers
#5 Grand Valley State has begun the 2012 season 6-4 overall…As a team, the Lakers are hitting .331 and had at least 13 hits in six of the first 10 games…Senior Derrik Strzalkowski (London, Ont.) is hitting .441 and has started games at catcher (one), designated hitter (two), first base (three) and third base (three)…He had a streak of four straight games with at least two hits during the spring trip and hit .519 over the seven-game span…Senior Steve Anderson (Northville, Mich.) already has 15 RBI on the season and nine extra base hits…He had a career-high six RBI against West Virginia Wesleyan and hit home runs in back-to-back games against Lewis and St. Joseph’s…He has an eight-game hitting streak and five straight multi-hit games…Senior Kyle Schepel (Grand Rapids, Mich.) has won the first three starts of his season, placing him within one victory of tying the career record for wins at GVSU…The Lakers travel to Urbana (Ohio) for a pair of doubleheaders this weekend (3/17-18).
The Hillsdale College baseball team has lost five of its first six games of the 2012 season, losing all three at Bellarmine over the weekend…The Chargers scored a total of six runs in the three-game sweep at the hands of the Knights…The Charger baseball team was at the same school at the same time as the Hillsdale College men’s basketball program, who was at Bellarmine participating at NCAA regionals…Through six games, junior Scott Lantis is leading Hillsdale with a .357 batting average, while senior Chris Stephens has a team-high seven hits…Lantis and freshman Vinny Delicata have a .500 on-base percentage through six games…The Chargers will travel to Florida this weekend for its annual spring trip.
Lake Erie Storm
The Storm split a doubleheader at Northern Kentucky to open the spring trip and then lost at #3 Delta State in the series opener on Tuesday night… sophomore Reid Rizzo drove in a run in each of the games at NKU. He and senior Brayan Cacique each have four-game hitting streaks currently… at NKU, Adam Beach allowed three runs on six hits in seven-plus innings with eight strikeouts in the loss and Brian Kilway followed by allowing just one run in 5 1/3 innings with six K’s… junior all-conference reliever Doug Fox pitched in both games at NKU, throwing a combined 2 2/3 scoreless innings and earning the save in the nightcap… freshman Cory Dog made his collegiate debut at Delta State and threw a perfect inning in relief, striking out one… Lake Erie plays one more game at Delta State and then travels to Monticello, Ark. to play Arkansas-Monticello and Southern Arkansas on March 15 to wrap up the Spring Break Trip.
Northwood is currently on its annual trip to Florida and has opened its 2012 season by going 5-1. NU will start GLIAC play 3/24 at home against Ashland.
Ohio Dominican Panthers
After batting .273 as a team last
year, ODU’s bats have helped carry the Panthers to a 4-2
start to the 2012 season as the squad is hitting .305 through six
contests…The Panthers are averaging 9.7 hits per
game…Senior right fielder John Bowron (Dayton, Ohio) has
helped shoulder the load as he is hitting .600 (9-for-15) with four
runs scored, two steals and is also sporting a .667 on-base
percentage…Senior center fielder Evan Shaw (Delaware, Ohio)
and freshman first baseman Jake Simmerman (Westerville, Ohio) are
both hitting at a .385 clip (5-for-13)…On the mound,
sophomore righty Sean Blackburn (Wadsworth, Ohio) has yet to allow
an earned run in his two starts, spanning 11.0 innings. He defeated
Bellarmine in the opener…Senior righty Erik Lamka (Troy,
Ohio) had an impressive outing against Slippery Rock, picking up
the win with 2.2 shutout innings of relief, striking out
six…Junior Nick Venditti (Brecksville, Ohio) defeated
Bellarmine with six innings of two-hit shutout baseball, and junior
Alex Borgan (Pickerington, Ohio) earned a win after allowing just
one run in five innings against UIndy.
Saginaw Valley State Cardinals
Saginaw Valley State University
baseball returned from the 2012 RussMatt Invitational with a 3-8
overall record. The Cardinals won their first game of the season
against West Virginia Wesleyan before dropping their next seven
contests. SVSU snapped the streak by defeating Lewis in a thrilling
come-from-behind effort in their last at bat. The Saginaw Valley
bats would come alive on the final day of the Florida trip in a
23-1 win over Mansfield. The Cardinals were led by senior Kyle
O’Boyle who hit to a .419 average in 11 games as he recorded
13 hits, a home run, 11 RBI and nine walks. First baseman Mike
VanAlst went 13-for-34 on the trip, while Brandon Schwanz was
13-of-24 from the plate for a .542 batting average. The
Cardinal pitching staff looked sharp for much of the trip and was
led by Colin Coulter who went 2-0 after throwing 12 innings
allowing just one run for a 0.75 earned run average. Mike Saunders
pitched two complete games and recorded a 1.93 era with 14
strikeouts. Carson Beauchaine pitched very well giving up four
earned runs in 12 innings of work with 12 strikeouts. Saginaw
Valley will be back in action on Saturday (Mar. 24) when they host
a weekend series against Hillsdale for their first GLIAC
competition of the 2012 season. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00
Tiffin has started the season 3-7
and will start the GLIAC portion of its schedule at Ohio Dominican
on March 23.
Wayne State Warriors
Highlights of Wayne State’s 6-2 start to the 2012 season include three straight wins at the Armstrong Atlantic Savannah Invitational including one over nationally-ranked Le Moyne, a 5-4 extra-inning victory over Rockhurst and a doubleheader sweep of Minnesota-Duluth. Shortstop Andrew Ciennik (.391) and catcher Brad Guenther (.375) are leading WSU with nine hits apiece and have combined to score nine runs and drive in six. Billy Hurley is 3-for-3 in save opportunities, and fellow senior Josh Wedesky won both of his starts while averaging one strikeout per inning. Wayne State has four opponents remaining on its Florida trip – Indianapolis, Winona State, Rollins and Mount Vernon Nazarene.
