#10 Ashland University swept Gannon and Mercyhurst over the weekend, pushing its win streak to seven matches. AU (12-2 GLIAC) sits in a slight lead of first place in the GLIAC South Division over Hillsdale, who is 11-2 in the league... Over the weekend, the Eagles hit .261 while holding its opponents to an .005 attack percentage. For the season, AU’s opponents are hitting at just an .090 clip, while the Eagles connect at a .255 mark. Continuing its solid play at the net, Ashland combined for 20 total blocks (5 solo, 30 assists), while allowing its opponents to 8 total blocks (4 solo, 8 assists)... Senior outside hitter Mary Kate Glowe (Avon Lake, OH/Magnificat) led the way with 27 kills (just 4 errors), a .303 attack percentage, 21 digs, and 4 service aces... Sophomore outside hitter Marina Santos (San Paula, Brazil/Copley) notched 16 kills and a team-best 24 digs... Freshman middle hitter Sophie Paddock (Girard, OH/Hubbard) collected 15 kills, with only 1 error for a .538 hitting percentage... Sophomore middle hitter Amanda Stefanski (Independence, OH) added 14 kills and 14 blocks (3 solo, 11 assists) for the Eagles... Senior setter Lynsey Warren (Worthington, OH/Bishop Watterson) and Glowe are numbers three and four, respectively in career aces at Ashland. Warren currently has 213 aces, while Glowe is fourth with 207. The school record is 245 by Bobbi Pugh, who was a star from 1988-1991... Ashland’s win streak is its second-longest of the year – AU won 12 straight matches from Aug. 25 to Sept. 18, when it beat Findlay, 3-1.

Senior libero Jamie Palazzolo (Emmett/Yale) currently ranks tied for sixth place among Ferris State’s single-season digs leaders with a match-high 16 digs at Lake Superior State last Sunday (10/21). Palazzolo, who presently has compiled a personal season-best 474 digs in 26 matches this season, is presently tied with Janna Biggs (1988; 474 digs) and is six shy of moving into a fifth-place tie with Kelly Stosik (1989; 480 digs)... Jamie Palazzolo has presently achieved double-figure digs in the last 24 consecutive matches to date and is averaging 19.0 digs per match (456 total) in that span. Palazzolo currently ranks seventh on the program’s all-time leaders list with 1,230 career digs in 112 matches... Senior outside hitter Lindsay Tye (Gregory/Chelsea) is two service aces shy of tying Kim McDowell (1988-91; 134 career aces) for 15th place on FSU’s all-time leaders chart. Tye presently has accumulated 132 aces in 105 matches and is tied with Janna Biggs (1985-88; 132 career aces) for 16th place... Sophomore outside-middle hitter Amanda Kettlewell (Marysville) has established career single-season highs in kills (31), service aces (seven), and digs (10) in 29 games this fall.

Oilers
Junior opposite hitter Kelsey Wesaw was an outstanding all around player this weekend for the Oilers. Wesaw averaged 3.85 kills per game and a .482 hitting percentage on the weekend. Included in that was a .567 against Wheeling Jesuit where she had 19 kills and a .600 against Gannon where she led the team with 14 kills. Wesaw, who stepped in as a primary passer for the Oilers, had only one serve receive error on the weekend and 25 digs. Wesaw also averaged a block a game... Freshman middle blocker Courtney Niemeyer had a career high 25 kills against Wheeling Jesuit while hitting .429. In that loss, junior middle blocker Caitlyn Yoder had 10 kills while hitting .474 and added 9 blocks... In the win over Gannon, the Oilers hit an impressive .467 as a team. Contributing to that percentage was Wesaw hitting .600 (14 kills), freshman outside hitter Jenny Slone hitting .571 (9 kills), senior outside hitter Mallory Fleming hitting .526 (12 kills), and freshman middle blocker Courtney Niemeyer hitting .500 (8 kills).

Golden Knights
Gannon dropped both matches last weekend at home against 10th-ranked Ashland and Findlay … the Lady Knights have dropped six consecutive matches and 13 of their last 14 … Gail Andrews (Strongsville, Ohio/Lutheran West) and Ashley Tubbs (Meadville, Pa.) led the team with 12 kills each during the two-match weekend … Tubbs hit .345 while Andrews recorded a .250 hitting percentage … Kadie Zimmerman (Essexville, Mich./Garber) was the lone Lady Knight to reach double digits in digs, posting 12 in two matches … Gannon plays its final two road matches this weekend at Wayne State and Hillsdale before completing the regular season with home matches against Edinboro and Mercyhurst.

#8 Grand Valley State went 2-1 on the weekend in the UP…GVSU dropped its first GLIAC match of the season at Northern Michigan, snapping the Lakers 19 match winning streak…The Lakers outhit their three opponents by a .268 to .133 margin…GVSU tallied 34 more kills, 12 more aces, and 10 more blocks than its opponents…Junior middle blocker Danielle Alexander led the way for the Lakers, posting 3.27 kills and 1.00 blocks per game…Senior middle blocker Erica Vandekopple recorded 2.82 kills, a .312 hitting percentage, 0.82 blocks, and 0.55 digs…Grand Valley State is currently ranked #2 in the Great Lakes Region and #8 in the CSTV/AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll…GVSU will end its four match road stint at West Michigan rival Ferris State on Friday, Oct. 27 at 5:00 p.m. for its lone match of the week.

Hillsdale received a much-needed day off on Saturday, and was able to go into the off day with some positive momentum after a 3-0 sweep of Wayne State University at home Friday night … Hillsdale has swept Wayne State five straight times, dating back to the 2005 regular season finale…The team’s .415 attack percentage for the match was its second-highest total of the season…Three players had 10 or more kills in the match, led by Emily Bennett’s 12 … Bennett played in just three total games in 2006, but has emerged as a force in the middle this season for the Chargers, recording six matches of 10 or more kills…Her 12 kills vs. Wayne State tie a career-high…Senior Melissa Bartlett recorded her 900th career kill in the match vs. Wayne State, placing her fifth on Hillsdale’s career kills list in less than two seasons…Bartlett spent her first two seasons at Eastern Michigan University…She has recorded double-digit kills in every match this season and has had over 20 10 times…Senior Megan Howard is the Chargers’ all-time leader in career digs, with 1,988, including 450 this season…Hillsdale now has nine 20-win seasons in its volleyball history, including two in a row…The Chargers are 49-8 since the start of the 2006 season…The team has won 19 or more matches four years in a row, a first in the program’s history…Hillsdale will hold its annual Senior Night at Friday night’s home match vs. Mercyhurst College at 7 p.m.

LSSU sophomore Ali Jones (Fruitport, Mich.) tied her career high for single-match by totaling 20 kills against Davenport, and it was her best performance ever in a three-set match. She posted a .621 attack percentage against Davenport and a .289 attack rate for the week…Junior setter Erin McLain (Alpena, Mich.) moved into second place on LSSU’s career assist list. She totaled 51 assists for the week and increased her career total to 2,651. McLain, who is a senior academically, is playing her final season with the Lakers. She will graduate this spring and plans to attend graduate school.

Lakers
Mercyhurst’s win over Findlay on Oct. 19 was the team’s first victory in the month of October and its first since defeating Wayne State on Sept. 28... The win over Findlay also halted a season-long six match losing streak. All of those six losses were GLIAC matches... On Oct. 20, Mercyhurst fell to Ashland by a 3-0 score. The Lakers have played three nationally ranked teams this year and are 0-3 in those matches... For the first time this season, four Lakers recorded double digit kills. Juniors Jenna Matson and Lauren Kubinski recorded 15 each, freshman Katie Fritz totaled 14 kills and 13 digs, and senior Christine Nisbet totaled 10 kills and three blocks. Sophomore Julia Butler totaled 54 assists, giving her four matches with 50 or more assists this season. She currently has 1,001 assists on the season and will need to average 42.8 assists over the team’s final five matches to tie the school’s single season record of 1,215, which was set by Pam Mueller in 1993. Nisbet tallied two service aces on Saturday, moving her into a tie with Lyndsi Hughes (2001-04) atop the career service aces record with 129.

The Huskies dropped a pair of matches over the weekend... Twins Jen and Christa Jung led Michigan Tech over the weekend... Jen finished with a team high in kills (20) and blocks (4)... Christa added 15 kills and a team-high three aces... Allison Greene also made 43 assists... The Huskies had a strong weekend at the net to finish with a 12.0 to 8.0 advantage in blocks.

NMU took care of GLIAC North Division foes Ferris State and Grand Valley State this past weekend in Marquette …NMU has now won three of its past five matches…The next three matches will be on the road for the ‘Cats as they are at Saginaw Valley and Northwood this week…Caryn VanBeckum led the ‘Cats over the weekend with 16 kills against FSU and a career-high 26 kills against GVSU, she had eight total blocks against the Bulldogs (three block solos and five block assists)…VanBeckum currently leads the team with 326 kills in 759 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .256 percent…Brittany McGowan went over 1,000 assists for the season as she stand at 1,067 as she had over 100 for the weekend…McGowan has 3,322, assists in her career which places her fifth on the all-time list…Cassie Osiecki led the ‘Cats with 26 digs against GVSU and has a team-high 425 for the season …Two players have over 10 block solos on the season, VanBeckum has a team-high 16 while Amy Andersen-Goldsworthy has 13…VanBeckum has 85 block assists and 101 total blocks to lead the team… She also leads the team with 40 service aces.

The Northwood University volleyball team dropped a hard-fought 3-2 match to rival Saginaw Valley Friday night (October 19) in its lone action of the week … after the two teams split a pair of lopsided opening two games, the match would be extremely tight to finish … over the final three games, the two teams would combine for 28 ties and 10 lead changes … for the match, Northwood finished with a 66-64 edge in kills, while SVSU had a 19-14 advantage in blocks … four Timberwolves finished with 12 or more kills – Lana Sorokina (Zakumuiza, Latvia/Murianu Sport) and Gordana Barac (Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina) each finished with 15 kills, while Ashley Carr (Marysville, Mich.) and Aleksandra Stoletova (Tomsk, Russia) each had 12 … Stoletova added seven six blocks, while Carr finished with six … Northwood will host their final three home matches of the season this week, as the three Upper Peninsula teams will visit Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

SVSU has won its third match in a row on Friday night, beating rival Northwood in five games in its only action of the week…with the win at Northwood, the Cardinals are now in a tie for third place in school history for most wins in a season with 18…SVSU is one win shy of a tie for second place for wins in a season…junior Sarah Redoute (Clinton Twp., Mich./L’Anse Creuse) led the Cardinals with 20 kills, and also added 20 digs in the win…junior Carmen Schacher (Flint, Mich./Kearsley) led the team with 25 digs on the night, while sophomore Alex Hamm (Royal Oak, Mich./Dondero)) added 15 kills…senior Amy Howard (Cass City, Mich.) and Schacher rank third and eighth respectively in the GLIAC in service aces per game…Schacher also ranks eighth in the division in digs per game with 4.29 per game.

Wayne State was dealt its third straight shutout loss Friday night at #14 Hillsdale … senior Gina Zielonka (Sterling Hts., Mich.) nearly had a double-double, leading the Warriors with nine kills while chipping in defensively with 11 digs … junior libero Mayssa Bazzi (Dearborn, Mich.) led WSU with 14 digs, increasing her season-total to 579 … Bazzi continues to lead the GLIAC and the nation with a 7.49 digs/game average … she is also sixth in the conference with 0.48 service aces per game … freshman setter Katy Westenberg (Milford, Mich.), who had 25 assists against the Chargers, is 10th in the GLIAC averaging 8.83 assists per game … Wayne State closes out its 2007 home schedule Friday against Gannon and Saturday versus Mercyhurst.
