#12 Ashland University compiled a 3-0 weekend, defeating Lake Superior State and Northern Michigan on Saturday and Michigan Tech on Sunday. The Eagles have won five straight matches and are tied for first place with #11 Hillsdale in the GLIAC South Division. The wins over Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech were just the third and second times, respectively, AU has defeated those schools. Ashland is now 3-10 lifetime against NMU and 2-11 against the Huskies. The Eagles held Lake Superior State to an .025 attack percentage, Northern Michigan to a .146 percentage, and Michigan Tech to an .099 clip. It is the eighth time in the last 11 matches AU has held its opponent under a .100 hitting percentage. On the year, Ashland’s opponents are connecting at an .096 rate, while Ashland is hitting .254... Senior outside hitter Mary Kate Glowe (Avon Lake, OH/Magnificat) had match-highs in kills in all three victories. She totaled 56 kills and 58 digs for the weekend. Sophomore middle hitter Amanda Stefanski (Independence, OH) notched 34 kills and just 7 errors for a .443 hitting percentage...The Eagle offense was again led by senior setter Lynsey Warren (Worthington, OH/Bishop Watterson). Over the weekend, Warren tallied 151 assists (15.10 per game), 27 digs, 11 block assists, 8 kills, and 3 service aces. She had 50+ assists in two matches. AU is 10-1 at home, with the only setback being a five-game heartbreaker to #8 Grand Valley State.

Senior libero Jamie Palazzolo (Emmett/Yale) extended her consecutive double-digit match digs streak to 21 after recording a match-high 24 digs against Hillsdale (10/12) and a team-best 15 digs versus Wayne State (10/13). Palazzolo, who has registered a team-leading 420 digs in 23 matches this fall to date, is 29 shy of matching her career single-season high 449 digs in 30 matches a season ago. Palazzolo is also 31 digs away from moving into a tie for 10th place with Danielle Baucher (451; 2005) on the program’s all-time single-season digs leaders list... Sophomore middle hitter Kristy Gilchrist (Macomb/Anchor Bay), who currently has amassed a career single-season best 484 career kills in 53 matches, needs 16 more kills to reach the 500 career kills mark. She also has compiled 15 double-figure kills matches this season to date... Junior outside-middle hitter Emily Nemmers’ (Caledona/East Kentwood) 17 digs against Hillsdale last Friday (10/12) represented a career single-match high, eclipsing her 14 digs at Saginaw Valley State earlier this campaign (9/22).

Freshman setter Megan Florence totaled 153 assists on the weekend including nearly setting a school record with her 71 assists in the match against Northern Michigan. Her assist total now sits in second place all-time for assists in a match. Defensively, sophomore libero Kelly Walter totaled 53 digs on the weekend while fellow classmate Amanda Binggeli added 39. Freshman middle blocker Courtney Niemeyer had 41 kills over the weekend and 13 blocks, including eight blocks against Northern Michigan. Junior opposite hitter Kelsey Wesaw added 32 kills on the weekend, including 21 kills against Northern Michigan where she hit for .588.

Gannon dropped both matches last weekend at home against Northwood and Saginaw Valley State … the Lady Knights have dropped four consecutive matches and 11 of their last 12 … Ashley Tubbs (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) produced a .314 hitting percentage last week, recording 14 kills and only three errors in 35 attacks … Tubbs also added seven blocks in two matches … Gail Andrews (Strongsville, Ohio/Lutheran West) tied Tubbs for the team lead in kills (14) last week … Gannon plays four of its last six regular-season matches at home.

#8 Grand Valley State is now the lone undefeated team in GLIAC action as they tallied two home wins this weekend, including a 3-2 thrilling victory over #10 Hillsdale…With the two victories, the Lakers extended its winning streak to 17 straight matches, the third highest streak in GVSU history…Grand Valley won 22 straight matches in 2001, which is the longest consecutive winning streak in school history…Junior middle blocker Danielle Alexander averaged 4.75 kills,5.25 points, 0.88 blocks, 0.62 digs and a .408 hitting percentage in the two matches…Her 15 kills against Wayne State were just four shy of the Warriors 19 team kills…She then recorded a career-high 23 kills against Hillsdale… Junior setter Jamie Ashmore posted a career-high 62 assists in the match against Hillsdale…As a team, the Lakers hit .253 in the two matches, while its opponents hit just .119…Senior middle blocker Erica Vandekopple is hitting .372 on the season, which ranks second in the GLIAC, while Alexander’s .357 hitting percentage is third best…Alexander’s 1.18 blocks per game ranks fifth and freshman Rebeccah Rapin is averaging 1.25 blocks per game, which is third best in the league…Ashmore’s 10.28 assists and 0.49 service aces both ranks seventh in the conference…Senior libero Allyson Riley ranks second in the GLIAC with 5.81 digs per game.

The Charger volleyball team’s 30-match GLIAC winning streak came to an end over the weekend, as Hillsdale lost back-to-back 3-2 decisions at Ferris State and Grand Valley… Hillsdale lost in the fifth game of each match by scores of 15-13 and 15-11, respectively…This marked the second year in a row the team had to play at Ferris State and Grand Valley on back-to-back days…Senior Melissa Bartlett recorded her two highest kill totals of her Hillsdale career in the two matches, getting 32 and 29 in the two matches…This marks the first time she will enter the AVCA’s 30-kill club as a member of Hillsdale College…Senior Megan Howard had 34 digs against Grand Valley, the second-most in her career…She has been in the AVCA’s 30-dig club several times during her career…Sophomore Kitt Smith also had a career-best 20 kills against Grand Valley…Hillsdale was ranked 10th in the nation entering play over the weekend…The Chargers have been nationally ranked every week since September 2006…The team played three 31-29 games over the weekend, winning two of them…The Chargers have won at least 19 games four years in a row, a new school record…Hillsdale hasn’t lost a home GLIAC match since Oct. 15, 2005 against Grand Valley.

Lakers
LSSU finished 0-4 during its recent road stretch, which spanned the last two weekends…The Lakers have a chance to snap a five-match losing skid when they return home and play host to Davenport on Oct. 18…The Lakers upcoming three-match homestand is part of Great Lake State Weekend Festivities. The 1978 LSSU volleyball team will be inducted into the LSSU Sports Hall of Fame on Oct. 20. That team finished 10-0 in the GLIAC and 28-7-1 overall. The squad included hall of fame setter Shaun Lake Antler, whose daughter, Kt, is a redshirt freshman on the current LSSU team…LSSU’s leader during last week’s matches at Findlay and Ashland was senior outside hitter Jamie Groos (Escanaba, Mich.), who combined to total 18 kills and a .125 attack percentage.

Lakers
The Lakers dropped two home GLIAC contests during the week to Saginaw Valley and Northwood to fall to 14-11 overall and 2-8 in the conference after starting the season 12-1. The Lakers are in the midst of a season-long six-match losing streak and have dropped 10 of their last 12 dating back to Sept. 14. Both losses came at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center, where the Lakers won their first 10 matches, but have since lost four in a row at home. Saginaw took the first match in three games, but Mercyhurst battled Northwood to five games before falling, 3-2. Twice during the six-straight losses, the Lakers have lost in five games. Against Saginaw Valley, Jenna Matson, Katie Fritz and Lauren Kubinski all recorded at least 10 kills. It is the sixth time this year that at least three players have totaled double digit kills in a match and it was just the second time it occurred in a loss. Despite the skid, the Lakers already have the most wins in a season since 2003 (16).

Huskies
The Michigan Tech volleyball team will host a pair of matches this Friday and Saturday where they are a perfect 4-0, after playing the last four matches on the road ... the Huskies are a perfect 4-0 at home this season ... The Huskies held a 22.0-19.0 advantage in blocks in the two matches ... Junior Jen Jung led the offensive attack for Michigan Tech as she recorded 20 kills on her way to hitting a .400 percentage during the two matches ... the Andover, Minn., native also recorded 10 block assists (1.25 bpg) ... Sophomore Allison Greene recorded 35 assists and 17 digs while junior Kelsey Skoog added 32 assists and 12 digs.

Wildcats
NMU will be back at home this week when they host GLIAC North foes Ferris State on Saturday (Oct. 20) and Grand Valley State on Sunday (Oct. 21)…After winning seven matches in a row the Wildcats have dropped three of its past four… NMU went 1-3 the past two weekends against the GLIAC South… Against Findlay four players had 57 of the 62 kills for the match… Caryn VanBeckum had back-to-back career matches at Ashland and Findlay when she had 20 and 24 kills respectively…VanBeckum now leads the team with 284 kills and has a hitting percentage of .243 percent…Brittany McGowan currently has 3,220 career assists which puts her fifth on the all-time list…McGowan had 47 assists at Ashland and 47 at Findlay over the weekend…McGowan had 94 of the 98 assists against the Eagles and Oilers and now has 965 for the season…Breanne Zaremba had 53 digs for the weekend and is second on the team with 310 digs, Cassie Osiecki leads the team with 388 digs…Amy Andersen-Goldsworthy had two block solos over the weekend and is currently tied with VanBeckum with 12 for the season…VanBeckum has 79 block assists and 91 total blocks to lead the team.

Timberwolves
Northwood extended its winning streak to three matches with a pair of wins last weekend, defeating Gannon 3-0 before earning a 3-2 win over Mercyhurst … Northwood is now 17-7 overall and has exceeded last year’s win total of 16 … the Timberwolves were once again led by Lana Sorokina (Zakumuiza, Latvia/Murianu Sport), who averaged 5.62 kills per game … she had 18 kills in NU’s sweep over Gannon before matching her career-high with 27 kills against Mercyhurst … for the season, Sorokina ranks second in the GLIAC with 4.63 kills per game … Gordana Barac (Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina) also had a strong week for the Timberwolves, averaging 4.25 kills and 2.5 digs per game … Northwood will have its next four matches at home after having just four of their first 24 matches at the Bennett Center … the Timberwolves will host Saginaw Valley in a key GLIAC North match-up Friday night at 7 p.m.

SVSU went unbeaten in a two game road trip to Erie, beating Mercyhurst and Gannon in three sets each … junior Sarah Redoute (Clinton Twp., Mich.) tied for the team lead in kills (17) and digs (12) in this week’s action… senior Amy Howard (Cass City, Mich.) led the Cardinals with 34 assists and six service aces for the week… sophomore Allison Schlinkert (Marysville, Mich.) missed both games this past week, but currently ranks seventh in the GLIAC with 3.67 kills per game… Howard and junior Carmen Schacher (Flint, Mich.) both rank in the top 10 in the GLIAC in assists per game at third and sixth respectively… the Cardinals only action this week will be on Friday when they visit Northwood.

Wayne State suffered a pair of 3-0 losses over the weekend, Friday at #8 Grand Valley State and Saturday at Ferris State … Gina Zielonka (Sterling Hts., Mich.) led the Warriors with a total of 11 kills in the two matches … Kim Gear (Watervliet, Mich.) had five block assists at Ferris State, her eighth match with five or more blocks this season … she ranks sixth in the GLIAC with a 1.09 blocks/game average … as a team, Wayne State is third in the league (2.68) … GLIAC digs leader Mayssa Bazzi (Dearborn, Mich.) has 549 on the year, putting her 54 away from setting a new WSU single-season record (602 – Sei Hee Hwang, 2004) … Bazzi also ranks eighth in the GLIAC in service aces per game (0.49) … Wayne State is at Hillsdale this Friday, Oct. 19, before closing its 2007 home schedule Oct. 26-27 against Gannon and Mercyhurst.
