#10 Ashland University compiled a 2-1 week on the road in GLIAC play, defeating Findlay and Wayne State and losing a five-game thriller at #17 Hillsdale. It was the first loss in Ashland’s last 13 matches. AU had six players with 7 or more kills against Findlay, led by sophomore middle hitter Britney Jurchenko (Lakewood, OH) with 11 kills and 15 digs and senior outside hitter Mary Kate Glowe (Avon Lake, OH/Magnificat) with 10 kills and a match-high 16 digs. Hillsdale and Ashland battled back and forth in a 2-hour, 22-minute marathon. Both teams traded games before the Chargers pulled out a 15-9 win in a dramatic fifth game. The Eagles trailed 28-22 in the fourth game before rallying and winning 32-30. Glowe paved the way with 25 kills and 22 digs, while Jurchenko tallied 17 kills and 10 digs. The two teams combined for 196 digs, 131 kills, and 24.0 total team blocks. Senior setter Lynsey Warren (Worthington, OH/Bishop Watterson) recorded 52 assists and a season-high 24 digs. The win was slight payback for HC, who lost its only two matches last year to the Eagles, both in postseason play. Ashland had five players with double-digit digs in the win at Wayne State, led by Warren (17) and Glowe (14). It was AU’s 10th 3-0 victory in its last 13 matches. The Eagles have won 13 of their last 14 matches and welcome Ferris State and #11 Grand Valley State to Kates Gymnasium this weekend for GLIAC competition.

Freshman middle hitter Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids/Central) has posted a team-leading 15 block solos and is only seven shy of equaling last season’s team block solo leaders in Karla White and Kristy Gilchrist, who each netted 22 block solos in 30 matches apiece... Senior libero Jamie Palazzolo (Emmett/Yale) extended her double-digit digs streak to 14 consecutive after posting 16 digs at Northwood (9/21) and 22 at Saginaw Valley State (9/22). Palazzolo is averaging 5.10 digs per game in 52 games during those 14 matches. Palazzolo, who has 1,039 career digs in 102 matches, needs 15 more digs to tie Sarah Vandermolen’s (1997-00) 11th-place 1,054 career-digs total among the Bulldogs’ all-time career leaders... Senior outside hitter Lindsay Tye (Gregory/Chelsea) is 72 kills away from reaching the 1,000-career mark and has currently compiled 928 total kills (3.03 avg.) in 95 career matches. Tye is within two kills of moving into a 16th-place tie with Jamie Kowalkowski (1995-98) on Ferris State’s all-time kills leader list... With its 3-0 conference win at Saginaw Valley State last Saturday (9/22), Ferris has now won 13 of the last 15 meetings against the Cardinals and is 46-9 all-time in the series between the two teams.

Oilers
Senior outside hitter Mallory Fleming led the Oilers in kills in all three matches this week. Fleming, who is currently fourth in career kills at Findlay, is now 241 kills away from being third. Fleming tallied up 50 kills in the three matches and also had 36 digs for the Oilers. Fleming is the go-to hitter for Findlay and averaged almost 47 attempts per match... Both freshman and sophomore setters Megan Florence (12.16) and Ashley Lewis (11.49) are in the top five in assists for the season in the GLIAC.

Golden Knights
Gannon dropped all three matches on its Upper Peninsula road trip last weekend … the trip concluded a seven-match road trip, but the Lady Knights have to head back on the road for three more road matches after a brief two-match homestand this weekend … Julienne Moots (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) averaged 1.67 kills and 0.92 blocks while hitting .333 last weekend … Moots had nine kills in two of three contests … Ashley Tubbs (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) reached double digits in kills for the third time this season with 11 at Michigan Tech … Tubbs has six aces against Lake Superior State, falling one shy of her career-high … Gail Andrews (Strongsville, Ohio./Lutheran West) led Gannon with 30 kills last week, reaching double digits in kills twice … Jess Saunders (Hinckley, Ohio/Highland) reached double digits in digs for the fourth time this season at Michigan Tech, recording a season-high 14 digs.

#11 Grand Valley State tallied two more GLIAC wins over the weekend, keeping its perfect record in GLIAC play… The Lakers remain the only undefeated team in the GLIAC North Division …Grand Valley State has won 10 straight matches, seven of which have been by a 3-0 margin…In the two matches over the weekend, the Lakers tallied 21 more kills, 24 more assists, 25 more digs, and 10 more blocks…GVSU hit .306 as a team in the two wins, while its opponents hit just .113…Senior middle blocker Erica Vandekopple recorded 3.83 kills, 0.67 aces, 1.33 digs, and 0.67 blocks, while hitting .364 and junior setter Jamie Ashmore added 13.50 assists, 2.50 digs, 1.17 kills, and 0.50 blocks per game…Junior outside hitter Lauren Reber posted 3.83 kills and 3.00 digs per game…Grand Valley State is ranked #11 in the CSTV/AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll, staying in the same spot they were a week ago…The Lakers will continue their four match road stint at Findlay on Friday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. and at Ashland on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 2 p.m.

Chargers
The Chargers earned wins over Wayne State, Ashland and Findlay to move to 5-0 in the GLIAC, holding a one-game lead over the Eagles in the GLIAC South Division…Hillsdale has now won 25 straight GLIAC matches, setting a new school record with every win…Junior Elisse Shank set a new career high in kills in a match twice last week, getting six vs. Wayne State and seven against Findlay …She had a career-high five service aces against Ashland Friday night…Friday’s win for the Chargers over the Eagles was the first time the two teams met since last year’s postseason, when Ashland handed Hillsdale its only two losses of the season… Hillsdale has won three straight regular season matches vs. Ashland … The Chargers have beaten Findlay eight of the past nine times they’ve met…Outside hitters Melissa Bartlett and Kittrick Smith each had double-digit kills in all three matches during the week… Senior libero Megan Howard joined the 30-dig club for the second time this season, when she had 32 against Ashland…She’s had 30 or more digs in a match five times in her career…Howard is now Hillsdale’s career leader in digs with 1,850, surpassing the previous record of 1,800 held by Cassandra Cole.

Lakers
LSSU achieved several milestones during Friday’s 3-2 victory over Gannon. The Lakers finished with their eighth-best single-match kill total in school history by totaling 85 kills against the Golden Knights. Sophomore Ali Jones (Fruitport, Mich.) totaled a career-high 20 kills, and senior Jamie Groos (Escanaba, Mich.) added a career-high 19. Junior Erin McLain (Alpena, Mich.) finished with a career-high 64 assists, which is the third-best single-match assist total in school history. Sophomore Jessica Ewer (Amherstberg, Ont.) added a career-high 41 digs, which ranks second on LSSU’s all-time single-match digs list.

Lakers
The Lakers worked their way through a 1-2 weekend road swing through Northern Michigan, Michigan Tech and Lake Superior State. Following loss NMU and MTU on Friday and Saturday, the Lakers had lost a four-consecutive matches and were winless in the GLIAC. But on Sunday, Mercyhurst snapped the skid with a 3-1 win over Lake Superior State. Despite the 1-4 conference mark, Mercyhurst’s 13 overall victories is near the top in the conference, with two teams at 15 wins and three teams at 14 wins... In the loss at Northern Michigan on Sept. 21, the Lakers received a career-high 21 kills from junior Lauren Kubinski ... Junior Jenna Matson has six-straight matches of at least 11 kills, dating back to Sept. 8 against Tiffin. She has totaled double digit kills in 13 of the teams’ 18 matches this season... Following MC’s five-match road swing that began on Sept. 14, the team opens a three-match home stand on Sept. 28 against Wayne State.

Huskies
After 10 matches on the road to open its 2007 season, the Michigan Tech volleyball team finally began its home schedule last weekend. The Huskies responded with two wins — a 3-0 victory over Mercyhurst and a 3-1 triumph over Gannon. MTU has six home games remaining on its 2007 schedule. The next two come this weekend (Sept. 28-29) vs. Saginaw Valley State and Northwood, respectively … The Huskies’ .331 hitting percentage against Gannon was its best as a team this season … Veronica Armstrong (Battle Creek, Mich./Central) compiled 23 kills, 11 service aces, and 21 digs in three matches last week. Armstrong and Jen Jung (Andover, Minn./Coon Rapids) are tied for the team lead in kills with 102 each on the season … MTI is 2-0 at home this season and 10-4 at the SDC Gym since the start of the 2006 campaign.

Wildcats
For the second week in a row NMU will play three matches …This week the Wildcats take a quick mid-week trip to the Soo to face the Lake Superior State Lakers, then it is back to Marquette to host Saginaw Valley and Northwood over the weekend … NMU currently has a four-match winning streak…The Wildcats had its first three home matches of the season and defeated Michigan Tech, Mercyhurst and Gannon…NMU has dropped three games in the past four matches…Mandie Meyer had 44 kills and a .319 hitting percentage for the week…Meyer against Michigan Tech had 12 kills (.348 hitting percentage), 19 kills against Mercyhurst (.196 hitting percentage) and 13 against Gannon (.545 hitting percentage)…The .395 hitting percentage against Gannon was a season-high…Cassie Osiecki led the ‘Cats in digs for the week with 37 as she now has a team-high 229, she also had nine service aces and now has 27 for the season which leads the team…Brittany McGowan had 110 of the 126 assists for the week and currently leads the team with 648 assists.

Timberwolves
The Northwood Volleyball team went 1-2 last week to stand at 14-3 overall, 2-3 in the GLIAC … all three of the Timberwolves matches were sweeps, as Northwood was swept by Saginaw Valley and Grand Valley and defeated Ferris State 3-0 … senior outside hitter Lana Sorokina (Zakumuiza, Latvia/Murianu Sport) continued her strong play this week, averaging 4.22 kills per game to go with 3.44 digs … she currently ranks second in the GLIAC and sixth nationally with 4.91 kills per game … junior middle blocker Aleksandra Stoletova (Tomsk, Russia) ranked second on the team for the week with 3.00 kills per game, while senior outside Gordana Barac (Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina) averaged 2.86 kills per game … Friday’s win over Ferris State marked the unveiling of Northwood’s new bleachers in the Bennett Sport Center … Northwood returns to the road for the sixth time in seven weeks with three matches this week, as the Timberwolves makes its yearly swing through the Upper Peninsula … NU will face Lake Superior Friday, Michigan Tech Saturday and Northern Michigan Sunday.

Saginaw Valley State posted a 1-2 record this week against GLIAC North competition including a win over #24 Northwood in three games...It was the first win over the Timberwolves since the 1992 season...Allison Schlinkert (Marysville, Mich.) tallied 31 kills to lead the team this week and ranks ninth in the GLIAC in kills per game...She also had 21 digs, four aces and three blocks...Sarah Redoute (Clinton Twp., Mich./L’Anse Creuse) averaged 2.56 kills per game this week with a total of 23 kills...Redoute also had 32 digs and five blocks...SVSU hit .181 for the week and averaged 2.78 aces per game.

Wayne State completed its five-match homestand with 3-0 losses to #17 Hillsdale on Tuesday, Findlay on Friday and #10 Ashland on Saturday … four of the nine games were by a deficit of three points or less … Mayssa Bazzi (Dearborn, Mich.), the GLIAC and national leader in digs per game (8.23), added three more stellar defensive efforts last week … she led all players in digs with 23 Tuesday against #17 Hillsdale and 19 versus Findlay on Friday before recording 33 on Saturday against #10 Ashland, her highest amount since posting 40 digs Sept. 7 at Charleston and her season-best for a three-game match … it marks her seventh match with 30 or more digs this season … she also had nine kills and five service aces over the three matches … Mallory McEnroe (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills North) and Kim Gear (Watervliet, Mich.) are sixth (1.15) and ninth (1.09), respectively, in the GLIAC in blocks/game … Wayne State heads to Erie this weekend to face Mercyhurst on Friday and Gannon on Saturday.
