#10 Ashland won all four matches at the Ashland Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Eagles are now 11-1 and winners of 9 straight matches. Seven of those nine matches have been 3-0 wins, including the last six contests AU has played. Sophomore middle hitter Amanda Stefanski (Independence, OH) hit .417 over the weekend and her hitting percentage actually dropped to .459 for the season. Stefanski recorded 42 kills (just 12 errors) to go along with 19 total blocks. She entered the weekend as the GLIAC leader in hitting percentage and blocks. Senior outside hitter Mary Kate Glowe (Avon Lake, OH/Magnificat) led the Eagles with 50 kills (only 5 errors) and 54 digs. Senior setter Lynsey Warren (Worthington, OH/Bishop Watterson) notched 170 assists, 33 digs, 10 total blocks, and 8 service aces over the weekend. Ashland opens its GLIAC schedule this weekend at home against Gannon (Friday, 7 p.m.) and Mercyhurst (Saturday, 1 p.m.).

Senior libero-outside hitter Jamie Palazzolo (Emmett/Yale) extended her current double-figure digs string to nine matches as she notched double digits in all three of Ferris State’s matches at the Minnesota Duluth Classic. Palazzolo is averaging 17.7 digs per match (159 total digs) during the nine matches. Palazzolo, who has amassed 933 digs in 97 career matches, is 67 shy of reaching the 1,000-career digs mark... Ferris State is 12-5 (.706) in conference openers since 1990, which includes a 7-2 home mark in those matches during that period. The Bulldogs have won seven of their last nine league openers to date after registering a 3-0 home triumph over Northwood in last season’s (9/8) conference home opener at Big Rapids, Mich... Senior outside hitter Lindsay Tye (Gregory/Chelsea) was selected as Ferris State’s lone representative on the Minnesota Duluth Classic All-Tournament Team. Tye, who has been named to two other (Ferris State Invitational and Days Inn-Denver West Oredigger Classic) all-tourney teams this season, compiled a team-leading 57 kills and a .417 hitting percentage in the Bulldogs’ three matches at the UMD Classic. She also registered a combined three service aces, 18 digs, and four blocks (three block assists).

Oilers
The University of Findlay volleyball team finished their trip to Charleston, West Virginia with a 5-0 record after defeating Glenville State 3-0 (30-20, 30-20, 30-18) and West Virginia State University 3-0 (30-25, 30-24, 30-27) on Saturday, September 8. The Oilers did not drop a game in all five of their matches over the weekend, extending their record to 11-3 on the year... Kelsey Wesaw was a key factor in every match the Oilers played this weekend. She averaged a .553 hitting percentage for the five matches, hitting a 1.000 against Alderson-Broaddus and a .714 against Glenville State. Wesaw gives the Oilers an advantage by giving them a go-to hitter on the right side resulting in an evenly distributed offense, which is hard to defend... The Oilers will begin conference play on Friday, Sept. 14 against Mercyhurst College at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 15 against Gannon University at 4 p.m.

Gannon posted a perfect 3-0 record last week with victories over Tiffin (3-2), Pitt-Johnstown (3-0), and Point Park (3-2) … the Lady Knights finished its early non-conference slate with a 4-4 record … Gannon plays 17 of its final 18 matches against GLIAC opponents, playing only Edinboro (Oct. 31) in non-conference action the rest of the way … Maire Prybyl (Mars, Pa./North Catholic) averaged 10.08 assists per game last week and dished out a career-high 54 assists against Tiffin … Prybyl posted double-doubles (assists-digs) against Tiffin and Point Park … Prybyl also had a career-high eight aces against Pitt-Johnstown … Gannon is 3-0 this season in five-game matches … Kendall Fischer (Boston Heights, Ohio/Nordonia) recorded 38 kills, 23 digs, and 12 blocks last week … Fischer posted her second double-double with 17 kills and 11 digs against Tiffin … Ashley Tubbs (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) had 19 blocks in three matches last week, including 15 in two matches at the Point Park Tournament … Gail Andrews (Strongsville, Ohio/Lutheran West) had a career-high 18 kills against Point Park.

#13 Grand Valley State tallied a 4-0 record over the weekend at the Ashland Invitational…The Lakers swept three out of four of its opponents and also defeated #24 Northern Kentucky, 3-1…GV hit .345 as a team and tallied 43 aces and 50.5 blocks per game…Junior outside hitter Lauren Reber averaged 3.89 kills, 2.67 digs, and 0.44 blocks per game, while hitting .368… Junior setter Jamie Ashmore posted 1.46 kills, 10.15 assists, 2.69 digs, and 1.00 kills as she hit .432…Senior middle blocker Erica Vandekopple recorded 3.15 kills, 0.69 aces, 1.31 blocks, and hit .352 … The Lakers will begin GLIAC play hosting Lake Superior State in their home opener on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. in the GVSU Fieldhouse. GVSU will then host Michigan Tech on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7p.m. and Northern Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 4 p.m.

The Hillsdale College volleyball team went 2-2 at the Ashland Tournament, finishing its tournament schedule with a 9-4 record…The Chargers moved up to No. 7 in the latest AVCA/CSTV Division II Top 25 poll last week…Senior Megan Howard had a career-high seven service aces against Wheeling-Jesuit Friday…Howard, who has 23 aces on the season, is now sixth on Hillsdale’s all-time aces list…Senior Melissa Bartlett has recorded at least 11 kills in all 13 matches the Chargers have played this season…The Chargers have defeated Bellarmine 3-0 in back-to-back weekends …As a team, the Chargers have 50 or more kills in five straight matches after this weekend’s play…The team had 10 or mor service aces in three of the four matches it played over the weekend…Freshman Amanda Bigney’s eight kills vs. Bellarmine are a career-high…Bartlett’s 24 kills in the three-game win over Lock Haven are the most by a Hillsdale player this season in a three-game match..

LSSU snapped a four-match losing streak with Saturday’s 3-1 victory over North Dakota at the Minnesota-Duluth Classic. LSSU’s 58 kills against UND was its second-highest team total of the season, while junior setter Erin McLain’s (Alpena, Mich.) 43 assists was a season high…Sophomore Sara Hess (Owosso, Mich.) led the Lakers in attacking for the weekend with a .289 percentage, 29 kills and four blocks…Senior Jamie Groos (Escanaba, Mich.) added 28 kills, followed by sophomore Ali Jones (Fruitport, Mich.) with 27.

Thanks to an impressive 4-0 weekend at the Laker Invitational, Mercyhurst improved its record to 12-1 on the season. After a 3-1 start, the team has won nine-consecutive matches and is off to the best start in school history, matching the 2005 team’s mark of 11-1. During the streak, the Lakers are 8-0 at home and are 7-0 the last two weekends at the Mercyhurst Invitational and Laker Invitational. The Lakers have already surpassed the previous season’s win total of seven. All but three of Mercyhurst’s 12 victories have come by 3-0 scores. Only Tiffin, W.Va. Wesleyan and Houghton have taken Mercyhurst to four games this season. Mercyhurst and Saginaw Valley were the only two squads to win four matches at the Laker Invitational. Mercyhurst landed three players on the all-tournament team. They were junior Jenna Matson, sophomore Julia Butler and freshman Kendall Asworth. The weekend also served as a career weekend for several players. Matson totaled a season-high 23 kills against Tiffin and Julia Butler set a season-high with 57 assists in the same match. Lauren Kubinski’s 18 kills against Tiffin was a career-high and she matched her previous best block total with eight block assists against Le Moyne on Friday. On the weekend, the Lakers averaged 16.31 kills per game, while holding opponents to just 11.46. The team also totaled 33 aces, while their opponents managed just 17 in four matches.

Two of Michigan Tech’s last three opponents have been ranked, including #4 Minnesota Duluth … Sophomore Kelly Jorgensen (Eden Prairie, Minn.) ranks in the top five in the GLIAC in hitting percentage at .385 … Sophomore Alison Greene (Andover, Minn./Totino Grace) is pacing the team in both assists (179) and service aces (9) … The Huskies are averaging 2.58 blocks per game.

Northern Michigan will open up GLIAC play this week on the road with matches against Grand Valley State and Ferris State…Over the weekend the Wildcats went 3-1 at the Argonaut Regional Crossover Tournament…NMU won its first three matches against Southern Arkansas (3-0), Rollins College (3-1) and Alabama-Huntsville (3-0) before losing its final match of the tournament to St. Leo (1-3)…Caryn VanBeckum led the ‘Cats in Florida with 54 kills, with 111 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .369 at the net VanBeckum had three block solos and 13 block assists for 16 total blocks. She had 15 kills against SAU, 13 against RC, 10 against UAH and 16 against SL...VanBeckum is currently second on the team with 128 kills, Katt Garvick has a team-high 150…Amy Andersen-Goldsworthy also had 13 block assists over the weekend…Andersen-Goldsworthy leads NMU with 45 total blocks (three solo and 42 assisted)…VanBeckum has five of the 12 block solos on the season…Brittney McGowan had 154 assists at the tournament and leads the ‘Cats with 448…Cassie Osiecki paces the ‘Cats with 17 service aces and 154 digs.

Northwood extended its winning streak to 12 matches to open the season by posting four 3-0 victories at the Armstrong Atlantic Tournament … Northwood defeated Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras, Coker College, Francis Marion and Armstrong Atlantic in the event … the 12 straight wins to open a year is the best for the Timberwolves since the 1997 season, a year with Northwood went 15-0 to start en route to the GLIAC Championship … the Timberwolves were led once again by Lana Sorokina (Zakumuiza, Latvia/Murianu Sport), who averaged 4.83 kills per game to go with 3.17 digs and 6.0 points per game … she finished with 15 kills and zero errors on 28 attempts (.536) in the Timberwolves 3-0 victory over Puerto Rico Rio-Piedras … Sorokina has had at least nine kills in all 12 matches this season and at least 15 kills eight times … junior middle blocker Aleksandra Stoletova (Tomsk, Russia) had a strong week for Northwood – she averaged 3.42 kills and 1.25 blocks while hitting .356 … Northwood hit .230 for the week while holding their opponents to a .080 mark … NU has posted a total of nine 3-0 victories in their 12 wins and have dropped a total of just four games so far this season … the Timberwolves will open GLIAC play this week with a pair of matches – Friday at No. 7 Hillsdale and Saturday at Wayne State.

Saginaw Valley State is off to one of the best starts in school history currently with an overall record of 11-2…The Cardinals won all four matches at the Mercyhurst Invite in Erie, Pennsylvania over the weekend…Juniors Sarah Redoute (Clinton Twp., Mich./L’Anse Creuse) and Carmen Schacher (Flint, Mich./Kearsley) were named to the All-Tournament Team…This is the second time this season that Redoute has made an All-Tournament Team doing so at Ferris State as well…Redoute had a total of 50 kills over the weekend…Schacher played well in the back row with 43 digs in the four matches.

Wayne State won three out of four matches at the University of Charleston (W.Va.) Holiday Inn Classic … WSU dropped the first match to West Virginia State before taking the next three, including a pair of shutouts on Saturday … junior libero Mayssa Bazzi (Dearborn, Mich.) totaled 122 digs and six service aces …. she leads the GLIAC with a 8.44 digs/game average and, with 270 digs through just eight matches, she is already nearly halfway to the Wayne State single-season record (602) … junior Kim Gear (Watervliet, Mich.) was the top Warrior hitter, posting 38 kills and a .228 attack percentage … senior Karri Kuczajda (Waterford, Mich./Chelsea) had 17 blocks, including four solo … Wayne State opens its GLIAC schedule at home against Saginaw Valley State on Friday and Northwood on Saturday.
