#8 Ashland won all four matches at the Fort Lewis Skyhawk Classic in Durango, Colorado. Senior setter Lynsey Warren (Worthington, OH/Bishop Watterson) was named as the tournament most valuable player, while senior outside hitter Mary Kate Glowe (Avon Lake, OH/Magnificat) was named to the all-tournament team. Warren racked up 176 assists (13.54 per game), 48 digs, and 14 total blocks. She tallied her season-high for assists in a match with 58 helpers against Fort Lewis on Friday night. Glowe tallied 55 kills and just 13 errors to cap off a solid weekend. She also lead the team with 60 digs, including a 22-kill, 24-dig performance in the victory over Fort Lewis. In the win over Eastern New Mexico, AU combined for 55 kills and just six errors for a remarkable .408 attack percentage. Sophomore middle hitter Amanda Stefanski (Independence, OH) recorded 43 kills and only nine errors for a .466 percentage over the weekend. The Eagles also combined for 66 block assists and a total of 49 team blocks, compared to just 22 by their opponents. Ashland opens up home play on September 7-8 at the Ashland Invitational, with a possibility that five of the eight teams will be nationally ranked.

Senior outside hitter Lindsay Tye (Gregory/Chelsea) was selected to the seven-member 2007 Days Inn-Denver West Oredigger Classic All-Tournament Team as a result of totaling a team-leading 73 kills to go with a squad-best tying six service aces. Tye recorded a .247 attack percentage while notching 38 digs and five blocks (three block solos) in 14 games of the Bulldogs’ four tournament matches. Tye has been named to all four regular-season tournament all-tourney teams the last two seasons to date. She has twice received such honors at the Ferris State Invitational (2006 & 2007) along with the 2006 Alamo City Classic and the 2007 Days Inn-Denver West Oredigger Classic... .Lindsey Tye registered her 20th career double-double with a 17 kills and 11 digs against Mesa State Saturday (9/1) at the Days Inn-Denver West Oredigger Classic in Golden, Colo. Tye, who has two double-double (kills & digs) match performances this season, totaled 13 such efforts in the 2006 season... Ferris State’s 7-1 start this season resembles last year’s when the Bulldogs started off 2006 by winning nine of their first 10 matches. Ferris went on to finish the 2006 season at 21-9 overall.

Oilers
Jackie Kahlig was named to the TownePlace Suites Classic all-tournament team after leading her team to a 3-1 record for the weekend and a 4-1 record for the week. Kahlig was the most consistent player this past week for the Oilers. In every match played she hit either the highest percentage for the team or close to it, including hitting .500 against Tiffin University and .667 against Wheeling Jesuit. Even when the Oilers were defeated by Truman State, Kahlig dominated and hit .467 for the match.

Golden Knights
Gannon went 1-3 at the California (Pa.) Tournament last weekend, picking up its lone victory against West Liberty State … Ashley Tubbs (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) hit .300 or better in three of the four matches, averaging 2.1 kills and 1.43 digs per game … Kendall Fischer (Boston Heights, Ohio/Nordonia) recorded her first career double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs against Slippery Rock … Fischer averaged 2.4 kills and 2.2 digs at the tournament … Julienne Moots (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) produced a .593 attack percentage during Gannon’s sweep of West Liberty State, recording eight kills and only one error in 12 attempts … Maire Prybyl (Mars, Pa./North Catholic) averaged 7.7 assists and 2.6 digs during the tourney … Gannon hosts Tiffin September 6 in the squad’s home opener.

Grand Valley State tallied a 2-2 record in the Regis Premier Tournament in Denver, Colo….Three out of the four teams the Lakers played in the tournament were ranked the top 25…Grand Valley dropped from #11 to #13 in this week’s CSTV/AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll…In four matches, Grand Valley tallied 50 more kills and 11 more service aces than its opponents…The Lakers were led by senior middle blocker Erica Vandekopple who tallied 3.38 kills, 1.00 blocks, 0.31 digs and a .318 hitting percentage…Senior libero Allyson Riley added 5.25 digs, while junior setter Jamie Ashmore had 9.88 assists, 1.88 digs, and 0.62 blocks…Vandekopple posted a career-high 19 kills as the Lakers fell, 3-2 to SIUE…Junior middle blocker Danielle Alexander had a career-high 17 kills and Ashmore had a career-high with 56 assists as GVSU defeated Cal State Los Angeles, 3-2…The Lakers travel to Ashland this weekend and will play four teams in the Ashland Invitational.

The tough early-season tournaments continued over the weekend for the Hillsdale College volleyball team, who went 3-1 for the second consecutive weekend…The Chargers opened the week with an easy 3-0 win over Spring Arbor in its home opener Tuesday…The Cougars didn’t score more than 17 points in any game of the sweep…The Chargers earned three more 3-0 sweeps during the weekend, but lost to No. 6 Truman, 3-2…The five-game loss was the first by Hillsdale’s volleyball team since Oct. 21, 2005…Six of Hillsdale’s seven wins this season have come by 3-0 sweeps…In 2006, 21 of Hillsdale’s 29 wins were by 3-0 scores, giving the Chargers 27 3-0 sweeps in their last 36 victories…Sophomore Emily Bennett had a career-high 10 kills against Truman…Melissa Bartlett’s 29 kills and 18 digs vs. Truman were high marks since she came to Hillsdale in the 2006 season…Bartlett was named to the All-Tournament Team at Findlay, while Megan Howard was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Libero…Freshman Rachel VanderWall had a career-high eight kills vs. North Alabama…Sophomore Kittrick Smith has recorded double-figures in kills in eight of the team’s nine matches this season…Hillsdale has defeated North Alabama twice in the past four years, the first meeting coming in 2004 when UNA was the defending Division II national champions…Sophomore Hannah Barrett had a career-high six kills on 11 attempts with no errors vs. North Alabama…Junior Elisse Shank has six kills on six attempts with no errors in her two most recent matches played.

Junior Brishia Stroven (St. Louis, Mich.) finished third on the team in kills, but led the Lakers in average kills per game a 3.27 during last weekend’s Findlay Tournament…Senior Jamie Groos (Escanaba, Mich.) totaled a team-high 44 kills and averaged 3.14 kills per game…Sophomore libero Jessica Ewer (Amherstburg, Ont.) totaled a season-high 30 digs during the Lakers’ 3-0 loss to Wheeling Jesuit on Aug. 31…Junior setter Erin McLain (Alpena, Mich.) totaled a season-high 32 assists in a 3-1 loss to North Alabama on Sept. 1.

Lakers
Mercyhurst rolled to a 5-0 week, including a three-game win over IUP at home and a 4-0 weekend en route to a first-place finish at the Mercyhurst Invitational. With an 8-1 record to start the season, the Lakers have already eclipsed their 2006 season win total and are off to their best start since the 2005 squad opened the season 11-1. A key to the Lakers’ success has been their serving ability. The team has totaled 88 aces on the season, for an average of 3.03 per game, compared to the opposition’s 0.93 per game. The Lakers totaled a season-high nine aces against W.Va. Wesleyan on Aug. 31.

Junior Jen Jung (Andover, Minn./Coon Rapids) was named to the Rollins College Invitational All-Tournament for her efforts last weekend. The 6-1 middle hitter tallied 41 kills and a .329 hitting percentage in four matches … Sophomore Kelly Jorgensen (Eden Prairie,Minn.) registered a hitting percentage of .415 last weekend to lead the Huskies. She currently ranks sixth in the GLIAC in that category … True freshman Kathleen Storm (Hancock, Mich.) appeared in all four matches at Rollins. She turned in 15 kills and 12 block assists in her first collegiate matches.

Dominic Yoder picked up his first win on the NMU bench with a five-game win over North Dakota as the ‘Cats took three of the four matches over the weekend at the North Dakota Fall Tournament…Katt Garvick had 63 kills at the North Dakota Tournament, she had a match-high kills with 25 against North Dakota, 15 against UM-Crookston and 17 against Chadron State…For the season Garvick leads the ‘Cats with 107…Brittany McGowan had 174 of the 183 assists over the weekend…McGowan for the season has 294 assists and a team-leading eight service aces…Amy Andersen-Goldsworthy paced the ‘Cats at the net at North Dakota Tournament with 17 total blocks (one solo and 16 assists)…Andersen-Goldsworthy has three of the six block solos on the season and 29 block assists for a team-high 32 total blocks…Cassie Osiecki tallied 79 digs over the weekend and has a team-high 102 on the season…NMU will play in its third tournament in a row this weekend as the ‘Cats travel to Pensacola, Fla. to take part in the Argonaut Regional Crossover Tournament.

Timberwolves
Northwood continued its strong start to the season, earning the team title at the Findlay Invitational while posting a 4-0 record … the Timberwolves 8-0 start is its best since opening the 2001 season 9-0 … NU is now the lone remaining unbeaten team in the GLIAC … the highlight of the weekend proved to be a 3-2 victory over No. 6 Truman State … the Timberwolves also picked up victories over Wheeling Jesuit (3-2), Bellarmine (3-1) and Tiffin (3-0) … senior Lana Sorokina (Zakumizu, Latvia) was named the tournament Most Valuable Player after turning in another strong week … the defending GLIAC North Division Player of the Week averaged 5.18 kills and 6.06 points per game, finishing with at least 15 kills in all four matches … she hit .264 for the week while tallying 11 aces (0.65 per game) and 41 digs (2.41 per game) … she had 20 kills and 15 digs in a five-game victory over Wheeling Jesuit to open the weekend, followed by a 27 kill effort in a four-game win over Bellarmine … in Northwood’s victory over No. 6 Truman State, Sorokina finished with 26 kills and just six errors in 53 attempts (.377) … she also added 14 digs against TSU … Sorokina then finished the weekend with 15 kills in a three game win over Tiffin … for the season, Sorokina is averaging 5.14 kills per game to go with 6.07 points … fellow senior Gordana Barac (Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina) was also named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 3.59 kills and 2.41 digs per game … Northwood will look to continue its strong play at the Armstrong Atlantic Tournament this Friday and Saturday (Sept. 7-8).

Senior setter Amy Howard (Cass City, Mich.) had a very productive weekend at Cal State Monterey Bay with an average of 9.64 assists, 1.45 digs and a .632 attack percentage…Saginaw Valley State went 3-1 at the CSU Monterey Bay Invite including a big win over #20 Seattle Pacific…It was the first win over a nationally-ranked team under head coach Will Stanton…SVSU hit .254 for the tournament also defeating the host school and Notre Dame de Namur in four games on Saturday…Freshman Jessica Treiber (Unionville, Mich./Unionville-Sebewaing) hit .348 with 10 kills…Sophomore Allison Schlinkert (Marysville, Mich.) led the team with 46 kills and hit .303 for the tournament…Junior Sarah Redoute (Clinton Twp., Mich./L’Anse Creuse) hit .230 and tallied 45 kills, 33 digs and six blocks.

The Wayne State volleyball team went 2-2 opening the season at the Francis Marion Invitational Tournament last weekend … after a 3-1 loss in Friday’s match against FMU, the Warriors won two straight including a 3-2 comeback victory against Valdosta State which saw WSU erase a 2-0 deficit … junior transfer Mayssa Bazzi (Dearborn, Mich.) was named to the Francis Marion Invitational All-Tournament Team after totaling 148 digs in four matches … she set a single-match school record with 52 digs in a 3-2 win over Lenoir-Rhyne … senior Gina Zielonka (Sterling Hts., Mich.) posted consecutive double-doubles in the two Warrior victories … Wayne State travels to West Virginia this weekend for the University of Charleston Tournament before opening their GLIAC schedule at home Sept. 14 against SVSU.
