Ashland University
Eagles
The Eagles went 3-1 at the North Alabama Classic and earned a little revenge along the way. After opening-day victories over North Dakota and Tusculum, AU defeated the host school in a re-match of last season’s Elite Eight matchup at the NCAA Championships. As a team, the Eagles hit .262, including single-match performances of .366 against Tusculum and .311 against UNA. Sophomore middle blocker Amanda Stefanski (Independence, OH) led the way with a .494 percentage, tallying 47 kills to just nine errors over the weekend, including a team-high 15 blocks. Senior outside hitter Mary Kate Glowe (Avon Lake, OH/Magnificat) totaled a team-best 60 kills and 55 digs, including 23 kills and 19 digs against North Alabama. Senior setter Lynsey Warren (Worthington, OH/Bishop Watterson) notched 46 assists in the win over Tusculum and 55 helpers in the victory over UNA. Freshman Sophie Paddock (Girard, OH/Hubbard) registered 34 kills and tied for second-most on the team with 12 blocks.

Bulldogs
Senior outside hitter Lindsay Tye (Gregory/Chelsea) and junior setter Candice Marut (Pinconning) were both named to the 12-member 2007 Ferris State Invitational All-Tournament Team. Tye also received all-tournament team honors at the 2006 FSU Invite. Tye registered a squad-best tying 37 kills and had a .333 attack percentage in the tournament while Marut posted 24 kills to go with a team highs in both hitting percentage (.458) and assists (103)... Ferris State won all four of its 2007 Ferris State Invitational Tournament matches in three games apiece. The Bulldogs held the opposition to a combined .112 hitting percentage in the four matches...The Bulldogs’ 4-0 start this season represents the program’s best since 2005 when Ferris won its six matches of the campaign en route to concluding the season with a 22-10 overall record...Ferris State is presently outblocking its opponents 2.00-to-1.17 for the season. The Bulldogs have outblocked the opposition in three of their initial four matches this campaign and have a combined 10 more total blocks (24.0 to 14.0) to date than their foe.

Oilers
The Oilers began the season with a 2-2 record at the Florida Southern College Invitational…Findlay defeated Metro State and Abilene Christian and lost to nationally ranked Western Washington and Florida Southern…Senior outside hitter Mallory Fleming and junior opposite hitter Kelsey Wesaw led the attack with 59 and 53 kills respectively in the four matches.

Golden Knights
Gannon opened its regular season August 25 with a 3-0 loss at Clarion … it marked head coach Matt Darling’s debut at Gannon … freshman Gail Andrews (Strongsville, Ohio/Lutheran West) was the only Lady Knight to reach double digits in kills (12) as the team produced a -.069 hitting percentage.

Grand Valley State University
Lakers
#11 Grand Valley State started the 2007 season with a 4-0 record in the Ferris State Invitational last weekend…The Lakers swept three of the four teams they face and only dropped one game in the other match they played…GVSU hit .327 as a team and tallied 63 total blocks and 42 services aces…The Lakers were led by senior middle hitter Erica Vandekopple who hit .448 and averaged 3.46 kills, 1.62 blocks, and 1.08 digs per game…Freshman Rebeccah Rapin 2.31 kills, 1.62 blocks, and hit .519 and junior middle blocker Danielle Alexander hit .444 with 3.08 kills and 1.77 blocks…GVSU will travel to Denver, Colo. for the Regis Premier Tournament. The Lakers will play Lock Haven and Southwest Minnesota State on Friday, August 31. GVSU will play a team to be determined on Saturday, Sept. 1 depending on the outcome of Saturday’s matches.

The Hillsdale College volleyball team got the 2007 season off to a positive start by going 3-1 at the Florida Southern Tournament…the No. 10-ranked Chargers lost to No. 5 Florida Southern, but won back-to-back matches Saturday against a pair of teams from Colorado…Senior Jen Pilot eclipsed her previous career-high in kills in all four matches, getting 10, 10, 8 and 7 kills…Pilot’s previous career high for kills in a match was six, set on Sept. 1, 2006…All four of the team’s freshmen saw playing time at the tournament, with Sydney Dow and Rachel VanderWall starting in three of the four matches…Dow had a team-high seven service aces vs. Metro State Saturday…Senior Melissa Bartlett had more than 11 kills in all four of the matches, with a high of 19 against Metro State…This marked the second straight year Hillsdale played Metro State in the first tournament of the season, with the Chargers defeating the Roadrunners 3-0 in both meetings…The Chargers play their home opener Tuesday night, Aug. 28 against nearby Spring Arbor University… Hillsdale heads to Findlay to participate in that tournament this weekend, facing ranked foes Truman and North Alabama during the two-day, four-match set.

Jamie Groos, LSSU’s only senior who moved from middle hitter to outside hitter this season, was the Lakers’ top all-around player during their opening weekend at Ferris State. She led the Lakers in kills and attack percentage, finished second in digs and blocks, and third in service receptions.

Lakers
The Lakers picked up three victories in four matches at the Roberts Wesleyan Tournament, earning a second-place finish. Mercyhurst received a big weekend from its freshmen, with Kendall Ashworth leading the way with an all-tournament team performance and totaling 60 digs in four matches... Justine Smith also recorded an impressive 10 block solos and 11 block assists. Mercyhurst is also no stranger to strong starts. The team opened the season 5-0 last year, won 11 of the first 12 in 2005 and started 7-1 in 2003.

The Huskies were idle last week. MTU, which was picked to finish second in the GLIAC’s North Division, will open the 2007 season with four matches at the Rollins College Invitational in Winter Park, Fla. this weekend.

Dominic Yoder is still looking for his first win as the NMU Volleyball Coach…The Wildcats faced three teams ranked in the AVCA poll at the Concordia-St. Paul Tournament over the weekend as all the teams were ranked in the top seven…Katt Garvick led the ‘Cats over the weekend with 44 kills…Garvick tallied 17 kills against Truman State and 18 against Barry for team honors…Against Barry, five ‘Cats had 10 or more kills…Brittany McGowan had 120 assists at the CSP Tournament…Caryn VanBeckum leads NMU with 18 total blocks (two solo and 16 assists)…Cassie Osiecki had seven service aces over the weekend…Megan Elliott led the defensive with 57 digs at CSP…This week the ‘Cats are back on the road at the North Dakota Tournament.

Timberwolves
Northwood opened its season strong, posted four 3-0 sweeps to stand at 4-0 … all four of the wins will count as regional victories for the Timberwolves … NU used a balance of strong defense and efficient offense in the first week … as a team, Northwood hit .262 (188-74-435) while holding their opponents to a .076 attack percentage … the Timberwolves averaged more five kills per game higher than their opponents (15.67-10.0) … Northwood held big advantages in aces per game (3.58-1.22), digs per game (14.92-12.78) and blocks per game (3.0-1.22) … NU placed a pair of players on the All-Tournament team at the conclusion of the event – senior Lana Sorokina (Zakumizu, Latvia) and sophomore Sarah Pollard (Naperville, Ill./Central) … Sorokina averaged 5.09 kills per game while hitting .333 … she had 12 kills and a .375 attack percentage in the opener versus Saint Cloud State, followed by 22 kills and just four errors on 44 attempts (.409 attack percentage) against West Virginia State … Sorokina then finished the weekend with 13 kills and a .321 attack percentage against West Virginia Wesleyan … Pollard led Northwood in digs in all four matches, finishing with at least 13 in each outing (4.75 per game) … the Timberwolves will travel to the Findlay Invitational next weekend.

Saginaw Valley State opened the season with a 3-1 record at the Ferris State Invitational including three 3-0 wins in their last three matches…Junior Sarah Redoute (Clinton Twp., Mich./L’Anse Creuse HS) was named to the All-Tournament Team after finishing with 45 kills, 34 digs and seven blocks…SVSU hit .199 as a team for the tournament and their opponents hit .211…Sophomore Jaclyn Carnago (St. Clair, Mich.) hit .321 with 24 kills and also had 14 blocks…Senior Amy Howard (Cass City, Mich.) recorded 147 assists (10.5 per game) and led the team with 11 aces…Junior Carmen Schacher (Flint, Mich./Kearsley HS) registered 63 digs and five aces8.
