The Eagles won their own AU Invitational last week. That’s the first time in school history AU ever won its own tournament. Ashland begins this week sitting in third place in the GLIAC. The Eagles have never finished that high in conference play.

Bulldogs
The Ferris State women’s tennis team came out victorious Friday (Oct. 12) in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match play with a 5-4 decision over Saginaw Valley State in University Center, Mich. The Bulldogs won all three doubles matches to claim the edge as Ferris prevailed in only two of the six singles matches. The victory improves Ferris State’s record to 2-5 both overall and in the conference as the win ended a three-match losing string. The Bulldogs’ next action on the courts is Friday, Oct. 19, when they host Findlay in a 3 p.m. (EDT) league encounter at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

Oilers
The University of Findlay women’s tennis team fell at home on Wednesday, October 10 6-3 to Wayne State University. The loss gives them a 5-7 record on the season with a 1-5 mark in the GLIAC... Freshman Candace Pahl (Upper Sandusky, Ohio) tallied two of the Oilers’ three points, winning at No. 6 singles, and teamming with partner, junior Amanda Molnar (West Milton, Ohio), for a win at No. 3 doubles... The Oilers will be back at it again on Oct. 19 when they travel to Big Rapids, Michigan to take on Ferris State University at 3 p.m.

The Grand Valley State womens tennis team had just one match this week, earning an 8-1 win at SVSU... GVSU improved to 7-0 overall and 6-0 in the GLIAC... Senior Jenna Killips picked up a 6-0, 0-6, 6-3 win over Katie Hanover in No. 1 singles and is now 9-3 in singles play on the yearJunior Audrey Koopsen earned a victory in No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-3. Koopsen is also 9-3 on the season... The Lakers, as a team, are posting a 59-11 singles record, including a 33-3 record in the conference... In doubles, Killips and Emily Zeller won their seventh match in a row with an 8-2 decision in No. 2 doubles... Freshmen Chelsea Johnston and Darylann Trout improved their record to 11-1 on the season with an 8-0 shutout of their opponents... So far in doubles action this season, GVSU is sporting a 30-7 record, including a 16-2 mark in GLIAC play.

Mercyhurst played a pair of NCAA Division I teams this week, losing to Duquesne 9-0 before almost upsetting St. Bonaventure in a 4-3 loss…The game against St. Bonaventure was played under Division I rules and the Lakers picked up the doubles point by winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles…Jennifer Daly and Kim Ezzo also got victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles against St. Bonaventure, winning their matches in straight sets…Ezzo is 11-3 on the year in singles play…Jaclyn McLean and Meghan Raynor are 9-4 at No. 2 doubles this year…Mercyhurst plays Ashland Saturday and would be the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament with a win.

Northwood’s women’s tennis team took part in the ITA National Small College Championships this weekend in Mobile, Alabama... Freshman Darina Berkova (Ceske Budejovic, Czech Republic) took part in the singles event, while the team of Ashley Neumann (Port Colborn, Ont.) and Julia Goncalves (Curtiba, Brazel) competed in the doubles tournament... Berkova opened singles by facing top-seeded Suzana Cavalcante of West Florida. Berkova dropped a 6-2, 0-6, 6-1 match to Cavalcante before falling to Kristina Vucenov, NW Missouri St. 7-6, 6-4 in the back draw... Neumann and Goncalves dropped their opening match of the doubles tournament to Elwen Li and Maggie Deng of BYU-Hawaii 6-3, 6-2. Li and Deng would go on to win the event. The Northwood duo would go on to earn a 7-5, 7-6 win over Helena Van Eysendeyk and Lisa Santoro before falling to Suzana Cavalcante/Paola Arevalo, West Florida 6-2, 6-1 in the fifth place match... Northwood will face Grand Valley in a match-up of the two lone undefeated teams in the GLIAC Wednesday afternoon (October 17) at Noo.

Cardinals
The Cardinals dropped a pair of GLIAC home matches last weekend, falling to Ferris State, 5-4, before losing an 8-1 decision to Grand Valley State... Ferris swept the doubles matches en route to a 3-0 lead early on in the match. The Cardinals did however turn things around in singles, winning four of the six matches... Freshman Cortney Heileman (East China, Mich./St. Clair) notched the only point of the day for the Cardinals in a three-set win at the three singles spot vs. GVSU... The Cardinals return to the courts on Friday, Oct. 19 when they travel to Lake Superior State. The action is set to get under way at noon. SVSU will travel to Michigan Tech on Saturday for an 11 a.m. match.

Milena Vuksanovic (Pancevo, Serbia/Uros Predic Secondary School) led WSU to a 1-0 record for the week notching a 2-0 combined singles and doubles mark last week against Findlay. She tallied a No.2 singles victory over UF’s Carrie Wise 7-6 (10-8), 6-3 and teamed with fellow freshman Sharon Gill to secure the Warriors’ only doubles point of the match with an 8-5 victory over Devin Games and Carrie Wise at the No. 1 position.
