       The Ferris State University women’s tennis team split a pair of league home matches this past weekend (Sept. 28-29) at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich. The Bulldogs picked up an 8-1 triumph over Lake Superior State in their 2007-08 home opener Friday (Sept. 28) before suffering a 8-1 loss to Michigan Tech in Saturday’s (Sept. 29) match... Ferris swept the singles round in the win over Lake Superior State and captured two of the three doubles decisions. Junior Ann Grant (Port Huron/Northern) was victorious in both of her weekend singles matches at the number three flight in the lineup. FSU visits rival Northwood Tuesday (Oct. 2) for a 1 p.m. (EDT) league match in Midland, Mich., before hosting West Michigan counterpart Grand Valley State Friday, Oct. 5, beginning at 3 p.m. (EDT) in Big Rapids.

     The University of Findlay women’s tennis team dropped three road matches last week. The Oilers fell to Ashland University, 9-0, on Saturday (Sept. 29) in Ashland, Ohio. UF also lost at Mercyhurst, 8-1, (Sept. 28) in Erie, Pa. The Oilers started the week by losing a 5-4 match at Tiffin (Ohio) on Tuesday... The losses gives the Oilers a 4-5 record on the year with a 0-3 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference... The Oilers will be back in action again on October 5 when they host Michigan Tech at 2 p.m.

     The Grand Valley State women’s tennis team continued to remain perfect in GLIAC play, winning both its matches at home over the weekend…In both matches, the Lakers fell at #1 doubles, but fought back to not give up another point against Michigan Tech…Jenna Killips fell in singles play against Lake Superior State, but GVSU swept all the rest of the seven points…GVSU has only dropped four points in its four matches…The Lakers will start a three game road trip this week…GVSU will travel to West Michigan rival Ferris State on Oct. 5 at 3:30 p.m.

      Senior Megan LaMothe (Troy, Mich.) avenged her 2007 NCAA Tournament loss to Grand Valley State’s Jenna Killips by winning last weekend’s No. 1 singles match, 6-3, 6-1. Last spring during NCAA regional play, Killips was ahead 6-0, 5-4 when play was suspended. They did not play each other during the regular season last fall…For the week, LaMothe was 1-1 in singles and 2-0 while paired with sophomore Weronika Lomacka (Warsaw, Poland) at No. 1 doubles…For the season, LaMothe is 3-2 at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, although she is undefeated when paired with Lomacka.

      Mercyhurst won a pair of GLIAC matches this week, defeating Findlay and Wayne State by identical 8-1 scores…The Lakers are now 8-1 overall and 5-1 in the GLIAC, equaling its conference win total from a year ago…Freshman Kim Ezzo remained undefeated in conference play at No. 2 singles, moving to 6-0 with a pair of straight set victories. She also had a pair of doubles wins…Meghan Raynor is now 8-1 on the year and 5-1 in conference play, picking up two victories at No. 4 singles…Raynor has also teamed up with Jaclyn McLean to compile a 7-1 record at No. 2 doubles this year…Mercyhurst has two more GLIAC matches this week, playing on the road at Saginaw Valley State and GLIAC power Northwood.

Huskies
      Michigan Tech claimed an 8-1 win at Ferris State in a GLIAC match. The Huskies swept the doubles matches and five of six singles matches in the decisive team victory... Amy Palmgren and Nicole Kirch gained their second win of the weekend at number one doubles with an 8-4 pro-set triumph. Silvia Oliveros and Nathalia Rondelli rolled to an 8-2 win at number two, while Samantha Jang-Stewart and Asel Otunchieva gained an 8-6 decision at number three... In singles, Palmgren, Oliveros, Otunchieva, and Heather Neff turned in straight set wins at flights one, two, five, and six, respectively. Jang-Stewart rebounded from a tough second set to win 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 at number four singles... A win by number one doubles provided the only Michigan Tech point in an 8-1 loss at Grand Valley State... Amy Palmgren and Nicole Kirch needed an extra game in their number one doubles pro-set to gain a 9-7 victory over Audrey Koopsen and McCall Monty.

Timberwolves
     The Northwood University women’s tennis team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 9-0 victory over Wayne State Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 26)... Wayne State falls to 1-1 on the year with the loss... Northwood swept doubles to take a 3-0 lead into singles. The Timberwolves then won all six singles matches in straight sets to complete the sweep... The Timberwolves are back in action October 2 when they host Ferris State. That match gets under way at 1 p.m.

Cardinals
      The Cardinals return to action this week when they host Mercyhurst and Ashland...Junior Katie Hanover (St. Johns, Mich.) was named GLIAC Player of the Week for Week 3 after going 5-0 against Tiffin and Findlay ... Hanover went 3-0 at the No.2 doubles position with freshman partner Sarah Campian (Troy, Mich) and 2-0 at No.1 singles.

     Freshman Sharon Gill (Windsor, Ont/Academie Ste. Cecile) notched a 2-2 combined singles and doubles mark last week against Ashland and Mercyhurst. She tallied No.1 singles victories over Ashland’s Myra Pepino, 6-2, 7-5, and Mercyhurst’s Jennifer Daly, 6-0, 6-0.
