AU’s wins last week over Lake Superior State and Michigan Tech were the first in the program’s history. The Eagles will compete this coming Saturday at the Wilmington Invitational where they are the defending champions…senior Chelsey Guerin (Massillon, OH/Washington), playing No. 5 singles, was 2-0 and added a pair of wins in doubles play.

Bulldogs
The Ferris State University women’s tennis team opened the 2007 campaign by defeating Kalamazoo Valley Community College by an 8-1 count in an exhibition match Monday (Sept. 10) at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich. The Bulldogs swept the doubles round and captured five of the six singles points. The Bulldogs are coached by first-year head coach Alex Palladino, who will also serve as Ferris’ men’s tennis coach this campaign. The FSU roster includes five juniors, one sophomore and four freshmen. Ferris State will play five of its nine league outings at home this fall. The Bulldogs will next take part in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Great Lakes Region Championships this Friday to Sunday, Sept. 14-16, in Indianapolis, Ind.

Grand Valley State competed in the DePauw Invitational, a tournament in which is the format is singles and doubles in individual flights...There was no team scoring...The Lakers went 15-3 in singles play and 8-1 in doubles action during the two days...GVSU will play in the ITA Regional Championship in Indianapolis, Ind. on Sept. 14-16.

Senior Megan LaMothe (Troy, Mich.) finished 1-1 at No. 1 singles and 1-1 at No. 1 doubles to lead the Lakers during their season-opening homestand. After losing 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 to Ashland’s Myra Pepino, she came back to beat Mercyhurst’s Jennifer Daly, 6-2, 7-5. She and teammate Gaby Juan-Alladio (Montreal, Que.) won 8-6 against Ashland and lost 8-5 to Mercyhurst in doubles.

Mercyhurst won a pair of GLIAC matches this week to move to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play…The Lakers defeated Michigan Tech 5-4 and Lake Superior State 8-1…Meghan Raynor went 4-0 on the week, dropping just five games total in four singles sets at the No. 4 spot. She also paired up with Jaclyn McLean to win twice at No. 2 doubles…McLean also went 4-0 as she won a pair of three set matches at No. 3 singles…The Lakers will compete in the ITA Tournament this weekend in Indianapolis.

Huskies
Michigan Tech was edged 5-4 by Mercyhurst today in the Huskies Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and home opener at the Gates Tennis Center. The hosts won two of three doubles matches, but couldn’t hold onto the lead in singles... Less than 24 hours removed from the marathon match against Mercyhurst, the Michigan Tech women’s tennis team played another against Ashland. The Huskies went five hours against Ashland before falling, 6-3, at the Gates Tennis Center... Unlikethe Mercyhurst match when Huskies’ doubles pairs pulled out two of three points, they were shut out by the Eagles... Michigan Tech (1-2, 0-2 GLIAC) will take a week off of dual match play to take part in the ITA Great Lakes Regional in Indianapolis this weekend (Sept. 14-16). The regional will feature a 64-player singles draw and a 32-team doubles draw.

The Warriors will begin the 2007 season at the ITA Regional Tournament on Sept. 14-16 in Indianapolis, Ind. Wayne State will not open GLIAC play until Sept. 21 when the Warriors host Saginaw Valley State ( 2 pm).
