Fourth-seeded Ashland was eliminated in the final four of the GLIAC Tournament with a 7-4 loss to Ferris State on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles appear to be on the outside of the NCAA Tournament picture, just shy of a playoff berth, as AU went 29-17 overall…entering the tournament, Ashland was first in fielding (.970 percentage), second in hitting (.304 batting average), and third in pitching (2.04 earned run average). In the four games at the league tourney, AU committed six errors for a .947 fielding percentage, hit just .240, and had a team ERA of 3.50…in the loss to Ferris State, Ashland tied a team-high with three errors. It was the fourth time AU had committed three miscues in a game — the Eagles were 3-0 in those games before falling to FSU…senior left fielder Jenn Alderson (Washington, PA/Chartiers Houston) was the lone Eagle on the All-GLIAC First Team. She was second on the team with a .352 average and 51 hits and tied a team-high with 30 runs scored. Alderson stole a team-high 17 bases (tied for second in the GLIAC), which is one shy of the school single-season record of 18 held by former All-American Sunny Litteral. Her 27 career thefts are fifth most in program history…senior third baseman Kristen McGaughey (Massillon, OH/Jackson) leave AU as one of the top power-hitters in team history. The slugger is third on the all-time list with 19 homers and fifth with 95 RBI…junior pitcher Shannon Gray (Nova, OH/Crestview) entered the AU record books allowing just 93 hits in 101.0 innings of work, which is the second fewest hits allowed in a single-season with a 100-inning minimum. Her 17 walks is the lowest total in school history, with a 100-inning minimum. Gray is also tied for third in career saves with three…freshman Erica Miller (Indianapolis, IN/Franklin Central) is the fourth Eagle and second in the past three season to win the GLIAC Freshman of the Year award. She finished the year with team-highs in hits (57), batting average (.363), doubles (10), slugging percentage (.465), and tied for first in triples (3) and runs scored (30).

Ferris State University
Bulldogs
Ferris State will be making its sixth NCAA Division II Regional appearance and its third one in the last four seasons. FSU is seeded sixth in the 2008 NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tournament (May 7-11), which represents the second year in a row in which the Bulldogs have garnered that particular place seeding. The Bulldogs have registered an 11-7 all-time record in NCAA-II Regional competition, which includes a 6-5 mark in their last 11 post-season outings. Ferris won all three of its 1998 Great Lakes Regional outings at Ashland, Ohio and then proceeded to win three of its four encounters at the 1999 Great Lakes Regional in Allendale, Mich. FSU claimed regional championship titles in both 1998 and 1999. Head coach Keri Becker, a three-time (1997, 2003, and 2008) GLIAC Coach of the Year Award recipient, has amassed a 9-5 career bench mark in NCAA-II Regional action. Ferris State’s 30 victories this season (30-16 overall) represents the eighth time in which the Bulldogs have reached the 30-win plateau in a single season. FSU compiled a 31-17 overall ledger a season ago. All but one (1995 – 30-17 overall) of the 30-win or more campaigns have occurred under head coach Keri Becker’s tutelage.

Oilers
The Oilers won their last two games of the season, each of them 4-0 at Heidelberg…In the first game, Lauren Orban (5-14) threw a complete game shutout while allowing only four hits…At the dish, Katie Ammons went 3-for-3 with a run while Jaccie Tufts added a double and a single for Findlay…Brigitte Webb added a two-run single for the Oilers as well…In the second game, Jenna Binz (5-12) went the distance to pick up the victory, striking out 13 and allowing only three hits in seven innings of work…Kara Hochevar went 2-for-3 with two runs-batted-in while Jessica Rolston and Kelly Heban also drove in a run apiece to aid the Oilers offense…Ammons was named first team all-GLIAC while Jeanne Hilvers and Audrey Semanco were named honorable mention all-GLIAC…Ammons led the Oilers by hitting .357 on the season and became the first Oilers player to be named first team all-conference since Robin Altenburger took home the honor after the 2004 season…She also led the team in hits (40), runs (22) and stolen bases (11)…Ammons also had one homerun and 16 runs-batted-in to go along with four doubles and two triples…Hilvers hit .327 on the season with a team-high two homeruns, five doubles, four triples and 18 RBI’s while Semanco hit .242 and led the Oilers with a .993 fielding percentage, the second best mark ever at UF in a single season.

Golden Knights
Gannon concluded its final season as a member of the GLIAC with a 28-21 record … the Lady Knights went 1-2 at the GLIAC Tournament last weekend, eliminating Grand Valley State for the second consecutive year with their only win of the weekend … Gannon won at least 25 games for the 15th consecutive season … Casee Piquet (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) and Jaclyn Corroto (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) both hit .500 at the GLIAC Tournament, going 5-for-10 … Piquet and Carol Kienzl (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) hit home runs during the victory over Grand Valley State … Corroto completed her collegiate career as Gannon’s all-time leader in hits (244), runs (158), games played (210), at-bats (693), and doubles (54) … Corroto ranks third all-time at Gannon in stolen bases (47) and fifth in RBI (124).

Grand Valley State University finished the season at 27-16 (12-8) after dropping their first two games in the GLIAC Tournament. Elizabeth Smith (Chicago, Ill.) finished the season leading the team in batting average, hitting .411. She also led the team in RBI with 38. Kristin Moleski (Rockford, Mich.) and Sarah Holland (Byron Center, Mich.) tied for the team lead in both triples (5) and doubles (11). Stephanie Cole (Ada, Mich.) finished the year 13-6 on the mound with an earned run average of 1.83, which both led the team. Lori Andjelich (Munster, Ind.) recorded 80 strikeouts to pace the staff.

The 2008 season came to an end for the Chargers last week, and it ended on a high note as the team swept Albion College 7-0 and 11-0 at home…The Chargers won their last three straight games by a total of 30 runs…Junior Jamie Vandenburgh threw a no-hitter in the season finale and struck out a career-high nine batters…Senior Brecken Libbe set a school and GLIAC single-season record with her 20th double of the season…She also hit three home runs in the last two games, giving her seven for the season…Those seven home runs are second-most in a single season in school history…Libbe was voted Second-Team All-GLIAC last week also…Senior Katie Botsis finished her career with 89 RBI, third-most in school history…The Chargers finished the season 13-37 overall and 6-14 in the GLIAC.

Lakers
With three wins on the week, the Mercyhurst softball team set a school record for wins in a season and head coach Sara Headley reached her 100th career win…The Lakers’ 25 wins are two more than the former school record, set just a year ago…Headley is now 101-127-1 in five seasons at Mercyhurst and has won 48 games over the past two seasons, the first back-to-back 20-win seasons in program history…Mercyhurst swept future PSAC rival Edinboro early in the week and then went 1-2 at the GLIAC Tournament, winning a wild 10-inning affair with Northwood that spanned two days because of rain…Freshman Michelle Schmitz ended her first season with a seven-game hit streak, batting .333 with five runs and three RBI on the week…Another freshman, Amanda Norman, gave up just two earned runs in 15 innings on the week. She pitched the final 9 1/3 innings in Mercyhurst’s come-from-behind 6-5 win over Northwood at the GLIAC Tournament, giving up just one unearned run…The Lakers graduate three senior starters heading into their first season in the PSAC in 2009.

The Northwood University softball team saw its 2008 season come to an end with a pair of extra-inning losses in the GLIAC Tournament … the Timberwolves lost the opener to Saginaw Valley 6-5 in nine innings before falling to Mercyhurst 6-5 in 10 innings … Northwood finishes its season with a 23-26 overall record … senior Korey Scluckbier (Reese, Mich.) made the final weeks of her career count … during the GLIAC Tournament, she hit .625 with a home run and two doubles … over the final eight games of her career, Schluckbier hit .444 with five home runs and 15 RBI’s to go with a 1.074 slugging percentage … in their two tournament games, NU held advantages over their opponents in hits (21-19), doubles (5-3) and ERA (2.62-2.95), but Northwood committed eight errors compared to just one for opponents ... senior third baseman Sam Thacker (Lincoln Park, Mich.) earned First Team All-GLIAC honors for the third time in her career, while Schluckbier joined Michelle Boscola (Broomfield, Colo.) on the honorable mention team.

Cardinals
The Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals took home the 2008 GLIAC Championship this past weekend, defeating Wayne State 3-2 in the deciding championship game. It was Saginaw Valley’s first GLIAC Championship since 1990, and they are now preparing to participate in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, in which they will take on Ferris State in their first game, a team that Saginaw Valley went 2-1 against this season, including a 10-4 victory in the second round of the GLIAC Tournament. The Cardinals are now 15-2 in neutral site games this season, and againstteams in the Great Lakes Regional this year alone, the Cardinals are 9-4, losing twice to Wayne State, once to Ferris State, and once to Indianapolis. Earlier this season, the Cardinals defeated SIU-Edwardsville, the #1 seed in the Great Lakes Regional, 9-1 on their annual spring trip to Florida. They also defeated Indianapolis 4-2 in non-conference play, but dropped an 8-0 decision to them, and the Cardinals also beat West Virginia Wesleyan (8-6) and Lewis University (1-0) during their Florida trip. The Cardinals finished the regular season and GLIAC Tournament third in ERA in the GLIAC with a 2.07 team mark, led the conference in saves (10), and second in strikeouts (263). At the plate, the Cardinals tied for the GLIAC lead with 28 homeruns. Stacy Kraatz finished the season second in the GLIAC in batting average (.391), first in hits (63), and second in homeruns (8) and total bases (96). She was also second in the GLIAC in opponent’s batting average (.202), fourth in ERA (1.90), and tied for second in wins (14), all contributing to her being named the 2008 GLIAC Player of the Year. Freshman Jade Fulton was second in the GLIAC in ERA (1.72), strikeouts (132), and was first in saves (8).

Wayne State took second place in the GLIAC tournament with a 4-2 mark … WSU played Saginaw Valley in three of the six games compiling a 1-2 mark against the Cardinals with two one-run setbacks sandwiched around an 8-2 Warrior victory … senior first baseman Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) batted .429 (9-21) with eight runs scored, two doubles, two home runs, six RBI and a .810 slugging percentage during the tournament … senior third baseman Robyn Haig (Waterloo, Ont.) hit .333 (6-18) with four RBI and a .400 on-base percentage … sophomore shortstop Jaci Banton (Richmond Hill, Ont.) also batted .333 (5-15) with two doubles and made many spectacular plays defensively … senior pitcher Molly Yetman (Cambridge, Ont.) compiled a 4-0 record with a 1.22 earned-run average ... she struck out 27 and walked eight while allowing 15 hits in 28.2 innings … this is the third consecutive year Wayne State has qualified for the NCAA tournament and the fifth time in the last seven years … for head coach Gary Bryce, it will be his 14th NCAA tournament appearance … WSU games from the NCAA Great Lakes Regional can be heard through the WSU web site and Teamline.
