Eagles
  The Eagles had a tough weekend, going 1-3 at home against Hillsdale and Wayne State…AU’s lone win came in game one against Hillsdale in a 9-1 victory. Ashland did not score in the remaining three games, losing 4-0, 6-0, and 1-0…in the four games, Ashland was outscored just 12-9, but suffered its first three-game losing streak of the season…in the win over Hillsdale, the Eagles had four players tally two hits apiece. Seniors Kristen McGaughey (Massillon, OH/Jackson) and Amanda Thomas (Ashley, OH/Buckeye Valley) each had a pair of runs batted in. McGaughey, a third baseman, also scored twice in that game, as did freshman outfielder Erica Miller (Indianapolis, IN/Franklin Central)…Miller leads Ashland with a .362 batting average and has seven multi-hit games this season…another freshman, pitcher Logan Hursey (Zanesville, OH/John Glenn) has been a bright spot for Ashland in the early goings. She went 1-1 over the weekend with a 1.17 earned run average. She gave up just two runs in 12.0 innings of work. Hursey is 4-3 this season with a 1.30 ERA…the departure of graduating senior Jaime Williams hasn’t been as big of a loss, as the Eagles have a 1.87 team ERA, as compared to a 2.70 earned run average from their opponents…even after AU’s tough weekend at the plate, Ashland is hitting .264 this year, while holding opponents to a .234 average.

Bulldogs
   Ferris State has now won five of its last nine home openers as a result of Saturday’s (March 29) 4-2 victory over Gannon in the Bulldogs’ 2008 home opener. FSU also improved to 3-6 in GLIAC openers dating back to 2000 and snapped a three-game conference-opening losing skid in the game one home decision against Gannon. Junior pitche Sarah Mueller (Santa Clarita, Calif./Valencia) is 3-0 with a 1.00 earned run average in 21.0 innings pitched for her last three appearances to date. In her first five outings this spring, the 2007 All-GLIAC First-Team and Daktronics All-America Third-Team selection went 2-3 in the circle with a 2.43 earned run average in 31.2 innings. She has registered 12 strikeouts and allowed 11 hits in her last three outings compared to 15 strikeouts and 34 hits in her first five pitching appearances this campaign. During its current six-game winning streak to date, Ferris State has outscored its opponent by a 40-6 margin. The Bulldogs have posted 75% (30-40) of their runs in the first three innings, which includes a 17-5 first-inning scoring advantage. Sarah Mueller is batting a team-high .563 average (9-16) with four extra-base hits and six RBIs during that six-game span and is 3-0 in the pitching circle with a 1.00 earned run average and 12 strikeouts in 21.0 innings.

  The Oilers finished last week with a 3-4 record, winning their first three games of the season…Findlay swept Concordia, lost to Urbana, was swept by Wayne State and split with Hillsdale during the week…In the wins over Concordia, Lauren Orban picked up a win and a save in the games…Jeanne Hilvers finished the series by going 6-for-6 with three RBI’s…In the win over Hillsdale, Brigitte Webb went 3-for-4 with a career-high four RBI’s…Hilvers currently leads the team with a .429 batting average while Webb has a team-high six RBI’s.

Golden Knights
  Gannon struggled during the first week of GLIAC play, going 0-4 at Ferris State and Grand Valley State … the Lady Knights finished 1-5 last week after a non-conference split against Mercyhurst … Gannon has lost five consecutive games for the first time since April 13-16, 2005 … Casee Piquet (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) raised her average 53 points last week after going 7-of-15 in six games … Piquet hit .467 with an .800 slugging percentage last week … Holli Michaels (Tacoma, Wash./Curtis) and Carol Kienzl (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) hit .350 and .333 respectively last week … Lauren Soldner (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) tossed a no-hitter during a 7-0 victory over Mercyhurst … Soldner allowed only a solo home run during a 1-0 loss at eighth-ranked Grand Valley State … Gannon is 12-0 this season when leading after the sixth inning.

Lakers
  The Lakers upped their record to 19-6 (4-0) after going 4-0 over the weekend. Senior Kristin Moleski (Rockford, Mich.) hit the inaugural home run at the new GVSU Softball Field, a shot over the right-field fence to go up 1-0 over Mercyhurst in game two. Senior Elizabeth Smith (Chicago, Ill.) hit a home run in game one against Gannon which turned out to be the difference in a 1-0 victory. Junior Lori Andjelich (Munster, Ind.) registered a no-hitter in five innings against Mercyhurst in game one, and came just one error away from a perfect game. Andjelich and senior Stephanie Cole (Ada, Mich.) combined to throw 24 shutout innings of softball against Mercyhurst and Gannon over the weekend. Smith has the top batting average in the conference, hitting .456 through 20 games. Grand Valley State as a team is batting .332, also tops in the GLIAC. The Lakers also lead the conference in runs scored (133), hits (221), RBIs (122), doubles (40), triples (12) and home runs (13).

Chargers
  The Hillsdale College softball team equaled its season win total this weekend, going 2-2 on the road vs. Ashland and Findlay…Both of Hillsdale’s wins were shutouts, with freshman pitcher Kellie Hirst leading the way in both games…She hasn’t allowed a run since March 16, going three straight appearances with no runs allowed…Senior Katie Botsis has 8 RBI this season, giving her 75 for her career, which is sixth on Hillsdale’s career list…She needs 12 RBI to move into third place on the list…Senior Aimee Genter now has 299 career strikeouts, moving into third place on Hillsdale’s career list…Senior Brecken Libbe has 15 doubles in each of the past two seasons, but already has eight this season, giving her 38 for her career…The Chargers stay on the road Tuesday for a GLIAC doubleheader at Wayne State…The team will make its home debut Friday afternoon vs. UM-Dearborn.

Lakers
  Sophomore catcher Nichole Dunford (Chesterfield, Mich.) was 3-for-3 with an RBI double to lead LSSU to a 6-4 victory at Northwood during Game 2 of Saturday’s double-header. Dunford was 4-for-6 with two RBIs for the day and 4-for-10 (.400) for the weekend. She is batting .274 for the season…LSSU freshman pitcher Jennie Elliott (Frankford, Mich.) earned her first GLIAC win on Saturday at Northwood after relieving starter Stephanie Reveley in the sixth inning. Elliott gave up two runs in the top of the sixth, but retired the side in the seventh. She is 3-1 with a 4.74 ERA for the year…LSSU’s top hitter, junior infielder Rachel Hall (Southgate, Mich.), was 2-for-8 during the Lakers’ first GLIAC weekend. She is batting .295 for the season…Junior third baseman Katie Brandt (White Cloud, Mich.) hit a game-winning two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning during Game 2 of the Northwood twinbill. It was her second home run of the season.

Lakers

  Mercyhurst split a non-conference doubleheader with crosstown rival Gannon this week before losing doubleheaders to Grand Valley State and Ferris State to open conference play…The Lakers scored just six runs in the six games this week and were shut out five times…Jessica McNurlen led Mercyhurst with a .294 batting average on the week…Amber Rapose hit her second career homer, a blast against Gannon that helped the Lakers to a 6-5 win…Carrina Crow started three games this week and picked up the win against Gannon. She had a 3.62 ERA in 19 1/3 innings, striking out 19 batters along the way…Mercyhurst is scheduled to play eight games this week with non-conference doubleheaders against Clarion and Tiffin before a pair of GLIAC doubleheaders against Findlay and Ashland on the weekend. Mercyhurst is yet to play at home this year but the Clarion, Findlay and Ashland doubleheaders are scheduled for the Mercyhurst Softball Field.

Timberwolves
   The Northwood University softball team opened GLIAC play by splitting a pair of games to Lake Superior … NU won game one 10-2 before the Lakers posted a 6-4 win in the nightcap .. NU is now 11-12 overall on the season … the Timberwolves offense had a strong day against the Lakers, batting .333 with a .491 slugging percentage … Ashley Slusser (Euclid, Ohio) continued her strong start to the season, finishing with four hits in seven plate appearances (.571) … for the year, Slusser is hitting .324 after entering the season as a .183 hitter … Ashley Belling (Utica, Mich.) hit .375 with a home run and five RBI’s to go with an .875 slugging percentage for the doubleheader … Michelle Boscola (Broomfield, Colo.) entered the weekend with one RBI on the season, but she drove in five runs in NU’s 10-2 victory in game one … Jessica Wojcik (Highland, Mich.) improved to 7-3 on the season with the win in game one … she has posted a 1.15 ERA in 12 appearances this season … NU will host SVSU in a non-conference matchup Wednesday afternoon before taking on Ferris State and Grand Valley this weekend.

Cardinals
  The SVSU Softball team had four games cancelled this week, but managed to get in a double dip against Lake Superior State on Saturday (Mar. 29). SVSU took two from the Lakers allowing one run and two hits total for the day. Stacy Kraatz (Howell, Mich./Hartland HS) pitched the first game throwing a perfect game in the 10-0 victory. She struck out seven and only threw 62 pitched on the day, 44 of which were for strikes. Freshman Jade Fulton (Byron, Mich./Byron HS) continued the solid pitching day for the Cardinals in game two as she pitched seven strong innings striking out 13 batters and allowing just two hits. Angela Kaiser (Waterford, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes) had a solid day against LSSU going three-for-seven with four RBI, four runs scored, two stolen bases and a walk. She was the offensive catalyst that helped the Cardinals produce ten runs in game one. She was responsible for eight of the team’s runs, scoring four and driving four in as well. Kaiser also came up with several key plays on defense in game one to help Stacy Kraatz preserve her perfect game. SVSU will travel to Madonna on April 1 and Northwood on April 2 before hosting Grand Valley on April 5 and Ferris State on April 6.

   The Warriors have won eight consecutive games and is 16-9 without playing a home game … Wayne State slated to host Hillsdale on Tuesday and Lake Superior on Sunday … WSU is 10-0 when not committing an error and 15-1 when holding an opponent to two runs or less … during Wayne State’s eight-game win streak they have recorded four straight shutouts and six total shutouts during the streak … senior pitcher Molly Yetman (Cambridge, Ont.) came within one batter of her second career perfect game on Sunday … she had a perfect game at home on April 27, 2007, vs. Ashland, and allowed just one runner to reach (fielding error by WSU infielder) on Sunday vs. the Eagles … it was Yetman’s second no-hitter of the season and her fifth for the Green and Gold … she is two strikeouts shy of tying Amy Thiede (2000-03) for third place on the WSU all-time list at 427 … shortstop Jaci Banton (Richmond Hill, Ont.) batted .556 (5-9) last week with four RBI … she has the longest active hitting streak on the team at five … senior first baseman Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) moved into fourth place on WSU’s all-time defensive putouts list surpassing current student assistant coach Sarah Kish (816/2004-07) and Krystal Matesic (818/1992-94) … Perry has 820 career putouts … WSU enters the week with the GLIAC’s best ERA (1.43) and second best batting average (.283) … Yetman leads the league in wins (13), ERA (0.54), strikeouts (125) … Perry is tops in the conference with 33 base hits and is fifth in batting average (.388) … Stephanie LeClair is among the league leaders in batting average (.387), triples (3), slugging percentage (.613) and total bases (46).
