Ashland University
Eagles
     The Eagles split a pair of matches this past weekend, defeating Gannon 2-0 and dropping a close decision to Mercyhurst, 3-2. Freshman Erin Charnley (Brampton, ONT/St. Thomas Aquinas) scored her first collegiate goal on Friday against the Golden Knights and it would prove to be the game-winning goal. Sophomore forward Kelly Usher (Ashland, OH) added her team-leading seventh goal just over 10 minutes later to give the Eagles some insurance. Senior goalkeeper Marie Supanich (Sebastopol, CA/Santa Rosa Junior College) secured her fifth shutout of the season by stopping six shots. That total tied her with Kristina Nasturzio of Grand Valley State for second most in the GLIAC. The AU freshmen continued to play well at Mercyhurst, with newcomers Beth Morr (Ashland, OH) and Hannah Brown (Massillon, OH/Jackson) each scoring their second goals of the season. Charnley assisted on Brown’s goal and it gave her eight assists on the year. She is tied for first in the GLIAC. Charnley is tied for the seventh most single-season assists in AU history, with three matches left to play.

     Senior midfielder Kristie Smilanich (Kalamazoo/Christian) became only the second player in the program’s history to register her 100th career point as she racked up four points on a pair of goals in Ferris State’s 6-2 conference home decision over Northwood Sunday (10/14). Smilanich, who presently has accumulated 103 career points (41-21=103) in 68 matches, presently ranks second among the Bulldogs’ all-time points leaders and is 16 points away from tying Emily Rogers (2000-03; 119 career pts.) for top honors...Ferris State’s top three points leaders this season — Kristie Smilanich (14-8=36), Heather O’Keefe (12-4=28), and Tammy Unsworth (8-6=22) have combined for 72.9% (86-118) of the squad’s total points output this fall... Freshman midfielder Megan Stec (Novi) posted the first points of her collegiate career with a pair of assists in FSU’s win over Northwood (10/14). Stec notched a helper on the last two markers late in the second half of the conference match.

     The Oilers won two games and lost another last week to improve to 8-6 on the year…Their eight wins equals their win total from the previous two seasons combined…The last time the Oilers have won eight games in a season came during the 2004 campaign … During the week, Findlay defeated Davis and Elkins 5-4, lost 5-0 to Mercyhurst and won 1-0 over Gannon…Cassie Strete picked up her first goal of the season in the Oilers 1-0 win over the Golden Knights, the game-winner…Lauren Clay scored her first two goals of the year in the win over Davis and Elkins.

     Gannon dropped both matches of a GLIAC homestand last weekend against Ashland (2-0) and Findlay (1-0) … the Lady Knights are 0-6-1 in their last seven matches after posting a 7-2-0 mark in their first nine contests … Gannon entered the weekend with a 4-1 home record before being swept by the GLIAC Ohio schools … Holly Johnson (Welland, Ontario/Notre Dame) made a season-high eight saves against Findlay, surpassing her previous season-high by three … GU needs at least one victory and one tie in its last two matches to record its first .500 record since 1999.

     Grand Valley State remains ranked #1 in the NSCAA poll after defeating Northwood (7-0) and Saginaw Valley State (2-1)…Through Oct. 7, Grand Valley was ranked second in Div. II in scoring offense (4.58 gpg)…The Lakers were also ranked third in goals-against average (0.333) and sixth in shutout percentage (0.667)…The Lakers are one of two teams in Div. II (Seattle Pacific) that have won all of their matches this season…Junior forward Katy Tafler (Mississauga, Ont./Cawthra Park) is ranked first in D-II in points per game (4.83) and goals per game (2.083) … Also as of Oct. 7, junior goalkeeper Kristina Nasturzio ranked first in goals-against average (0.18) and fifth in save percentage (0.926) … Tafler scored three goals in two games this week, upping her season total to 28, just five short of the GVSU single-season record …The Lakers have won 14 straight games, a school record…The Lakers have also won a school-record 25 straight home games.

     The Lakers bounced back in GLIAC play this weekend with two wins over Ashland and Findlay…On Friday, the Lakers defeated Ashland 5-0 with junior Sarah Powell leading the way on two goals and one assist…With win, junior goalkeeper Rebecca Heintzman earned her eighth shutout this year…On Sunday, Mercyhurst held out a feisty Findlay team for a 3-2 win…Powell again led the Lakers with one goal and one assist…This weekend, junior Sarah Powell assisted on both game winning goals.

Northern Michigan University
Wildcats
    NMU went out of conference this past weekend and won both games by 1-0 scores…NMU defeated St. Cloud in overtime (1-0) and UM-Duluth (1-0)…All nine victories have been shutouts for the Wildcats…NMU is back in GLIAC play this week by hosting Ferris State and Grand Valley State…NMU is now 1-0-2 in overtime games for the 2007 season…Kara Music has four of the shutouts on the season and was in goal for both games over the weekend…Music currently has a 0.58 goal-against average and an .889 save-percentage…Dana Stephens headed in the game-winner against St. Cloud for her third of the year…Joanna Kiilunen kicked home the game-winner against UM-Duluth.

Timberwolves
    The Northwood women’s soccer team dropped three matches last week, falling to Tiffin, No. 1 Grand Valley and Ferris State … the Timberwolves are now 1-11 on the season … NU netted a pair of goals against Ferris State, while Allyson DeLaLuz (Holland, Mich.) netting her first goal of the season and Christina Mazzetti (Birmingham, Mich./Notre Dame Prep) scoring her second tally of the year.

Cardinals
     The Cardinals earned a road split over the weekend, defeating Ferris State, 5-2, and falling to No. 1 Grand Valley State, 2-1... The two goals scored by GVSU was the Lakers’ lowest offensive output since on 1-0 victory over Regis (Colo.) on Aug. 26... The Cardinals’ goal was the first allowed by Grand Valley State since Findlay scored one goal against GVSU on Sept. 28, a span of four matches... Junior forward Tammie Edmunds scored SVSU’s goal against the Lakers... Junior MF Stephanie Roy tallied two goals and an assist in the win over Ferris State.
