Eagles
A pair of freshmen notched goals in the first collegiate game, a 3-1 win over Missouri-Rolla. Freshman Beth Morr (Ashland, OH) scored the first goal of AU’s season and newcomer Dani Lamb (Canton, OH/Jackson) added the bookend goal, scoring the final goal of the game in the 3-1 win. Another fellow Ashland product, sophomore forward Kelly Usher (Ashland, OH), added what would prove to be the game-winning goal in the 75th minute. Senior goalkeeper Marie Supanich (Sebastopol, CA/Santa Rosa Junior College) recorded eight saves for the win.

Senior midfielder Kristie Smilanich (Kalamazoo, Mich./Christian) has already reached double figures in points for the fourth consecutive season with a team-high 10 points (4-2=10) to date in two matches. Smilanich, who holds the distinction of being Ferris State’s first All-American in women’s soccer after receiving Daktronics NCAA-II All-America First-Team recognition a season ago, has presently accumulated 77 career points (31-15=77) in 56 matches. She trails only Emily Rogers (2000-03; 45-29=119 pts.) for the top spot among the Bulldogs’ career scoring leaders... Ferris State has already compiled seven goals in its first two matches this fall after garnering three in its initial two a season ago. The Bulldogs’ six goals at Kentucky Wesleyan (8/24) represents the most since last season when FSU scored 11 times in a 11-1 conference home decision against Northwood (9/13).

The Oilers dropped their first game of the season on Saturday, August 25, 2-1 to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Oilers fall to 0-1 on the year with the loss... The Rangers got on the board first when Brittany Kaim scored at the 13:35 mark in the first half. Findlay then answered at the 51:45 mark when Ali Cariglio put the ball in the net on a breakaway to tie the game at 1-1 before Becky Zirlin scored the game-winning goal for Parkside at the 78:24 mark... Ashley Wheaton took the loss by allowing two goals in the net. She also recorded four saves in the loss... The Oilers will be back in action again on Friday, August 31 when they host Northern Kentucky University. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at DeHaven Field.

Gannon opened its season with a 1-0 loss at Tiffin last Sunday … Tiffani Parks (Russellton, Pa./Deer Lakes) was the tough-luck loser in goal despite allowing only one goal and making five saves … Gannon had a 14-13 edge in shots and 8-2 advantage in corner kicks … the Lady Knights play four of their next five matches at home.

The Lakers entered the season ranked #2 overall after losing in the National Championship match last season…Defending GLIAC and Division II Player of the Year Katy Tafler (Mississauga, Ont./Cawthra Park) tallied an assist on the Lakers’ goal against Colorado School of the Mines and the game-winning goal against Regis University…Junior Ashley Elsass (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) notched her first goal of the year, a game-winner, against Colorado School of Mines (8/24)…Junior Colleen Hillgard (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) recorded an assist on Tafler’s goal against Regis (8/26)…The GVSU defense allowed just six shots on goal through two matches this week.

Mercyhurst opened its season on the road and finished 1-1 against two top 25 ranked opponents…On Friday, Mercyhurst upset #16 Indianapolis 2-1…Junior Sarah Powell scored both goals against #16 Indianapolis…On Sunday, Mercyhurst fell to #22 Quincy 3-2 in overtime…Powell and Senior Jacque Sluga each scored once in the loss...Powell now has 38 career goals in 42 games.

NMU opened up its season with two wins, both shutouts…Two goalkeepers shared in the shutout, against Bemidji Kara Music had eight saves while Dana Smith tallied two. Against Crookston, Music had all four saves, but played almost 77 minutes…Emily Lockery scored twice against Bemidji, she had three shots on goal…All three goals against Crookston were unassisted…Over the weekend the ‘Cats had 53 shots as 25 were on goal…The Wildcats will have a week off before its home opener against Lewis on Monday, Sept. 3…Renee LeBlanc, Lockery, Music and Meghan Sarna were named to the Holiday Inn Express All-Tournament Team.

The Northwood University women’s soccer team opened its 2007 season with a 3-0 loss to Drury Sunday afternoon (August 26) … the game was scoreless until the 34th minute, when the Panthers converted a cross to take a 1-0 lead to the break … DU then scored two goals within five minutes of each other early in the second half to earn the victory … for the match, Drury out-shot Northwood 13-4 … both teams finished the contest with two corner kicks … sophomore keeper Emily Pierce (Clarkston, Mich.) made four saves in the contest … Northwood will travel to Lewis for a match Saturday (September 1) at noon.

Saginaw Valley State women’s soccer opened the season with a pair of wins against Southern Indiana (6-1) and Drury (1-0) of the Great Lakes Valley Conference…Junior Stephanie Roy (Royal Oak, Mich./Dondero HS) led the team with six points, all coming in the USI match…She had two goals and two assists against the Screaming Eagles…Junior Kim Oberski (Port Huron, Mich.) tallied five points this week and connected on the game-winning goal at 17:06 against Drury…Oberski also scored at 51:02 against Southern Indiana and assisted on the first goal of the match…Senior Mara Dedomenicis (Windsor, Ont./Holy Name HS) also chipped in with one goal and one assist against USI…She scored at 19:57 unassisted and assisted on the second goal of the match which proved to be the game-winner…Senior Stacy LaLond (Cheboygan, Mich.) made all 17 saves on balls that came her way this week including several diving stops in the Drury match to preserve a shutout.
