In the history of AU track and field, it’s hard to imagine any women doing as much as junior Alissa Klaehn (Brunswick, OH) did at last week’s GLIAC meet. Klaehn won silver medals in the 100, 200, 100 hurdles, heptathlon and the 4X100 relay. She was fourth in the long jump. Klaehn has the third best effort in the nation in the 100 hurdles and the ninth best mark in the long jump…Tara Cooper (Circleville, OH/Logan Elm) was tabbed the GLIAC freshman of the year. Cooper won gold medals in the discus and hammer and was third in the shot put. The rookie has the fourth best throw in the country in the hammer throw…sophomore Abby Kascandi (Wooster, OH) won a conference crown in the triple jump and was fourth in the high jump. As of last week, Kascandi had the fourth best mark in the country in the high jump…the Eagles were ranked ninth in last week’s NCAA Division II power rankings…AU presented its annual team awards last week. Cooper was named the freshman of the year and Klaehn was the team’s most valuable player. Senior Jennifer Tinney (Nowalk, OH/Western Reserve) was the most valuable perormer in the field events and freshman Steph Tinney (Norwalk, OH/Western Reserve) was the most valuable performer in the running events.

The Ferris State University women’s outdoor track and field team completed action in the 2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships.The Bulldog women’s team placed fourth of 10 teams in the two-day event with 89 points.Senior Amy Woodman placed among the top four finishers in three events as she took fourth in both the 100-meter (12.43) and 200-meter dashes (26.00). She placed third in the long jump (19-04.75). Senior thrower Kamitra Carroll won the shot put (48-04) and produced a fourth-place finish in the hammer throw (177-04). Junior Krystle Wilson took top honors in the 400 meters (57.50). Finishing second in the triple jump was senior Dia Price, who had a best of 36’05.00". Freshman Tina Muir came in fourth overall in the 5,000 (18:26.17) and turned in a seventh-place showing in the 3,000-meter event (10:33.33). Freshman Paige Onweller took third place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11.33.61) and sophomore Emily Cross was fifth in the high jump (5-04.25). The Bulldog women’s 400x100-meter relay team generated a fifth-place performance (48.50).

The University of Findlay women’s outdoor track and field team completed the 2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship. Kirby Blackley and Pamela Bullock each walked away from the two day championship event with a hand in four conference titles. Blackley, who won the long jump on Thursday, came back with a championship in the 100 meter hurdles on Friday after racing to a time of 13.46. Blackley also teamed with Bullock, Stephanie Charnigo and Shannon Williamson to win both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays. The 4x100 meter relay team took home the gold with a NCAA provisional qualifying and meet record time of 46.53 while the 4x400 team finished first with a provisional qualifying mark of 3:49.23. Blackley also took home a third place finish in the 100 meter dash with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 11.99 and was named the GLIAC Athlete of the Meet for her efforts in winning four out of the five events she entered. Bullock added two more individual titles for the Oilers as she took home first in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Bullock crossed the finish line first in the 100 meter dash with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 11.95 and took the gold in the 200 meter dash with a provisional qualifying mark of 24.50. Kristi Comstock added a second place finish in the 800 meter run after finishing in 2:16.41 while Erin Lines was fourth in the discus throw at 138’05 and fifth in the shot put at 41’07. Lindsey Schmitmeyer, Charnigo and Williamson came up with fifth place finishes in the 800 meter run, 400 meter dash and 100 meter dash as Schmitmeyer placed fifth in the 800 at 2:17.16, Charnigo was the fifth athlete to cross the finish line in the 400 at 58.14 and Williamson was fifth in the 100 with a time of 12.47. Jessica Latham came up with a sixth place finish in the 1500 meter run with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:41.82 while Samantha Herdrich and Kristina Jeffries also finished sixth in their respective events during the competition. Herdrich was sixth in the 5000 meter run with a time of 19:16.15 while Jeffries was sixth in the shot put with a heave of 41’03.25.

Grand Valley State University claimed its ninth consecutive GLIAC title in outdoor track by picking up 251 points in University Center, Mich. GVSU got two top-nine finishes in the 400-meter dash, with both Katie Mandziara and Ashley Jager earning points. Mandziara finished fourth with a time of 57.77 seconds while Jager finished eighth at 59.27 seconds. GVSU took three top-nine finishes in the 800-meter run, led by Katherine McCarthy’s provisionally qualifying time of 2:12.40, which took first. Katie Alfredson tied for second at 2:16.41 and Rebecca Winchester was eighth with a time of 2:18.31. Four Lakers earned points in the 1500-meter run, with Susie Rivard finishing second and provisionally qualifying with a time of 4:38.60. Kelly Gibbons and Winchester were third and fourth, respectively, with times of 4:39.82 and 4:40.51. Alfredson finished seventh with a time of 4:42.99. Gibbons and Winchester both provisionally qualified, as well. Four Lakers crossed the finish line in order in the 3000-meter run, with Amy Kolin getting the highest finish in second place at 10:20.85. Gibbons was second (10:23.17), Rivard was fourth (10:27.36) and Samantha Gordon was fifth (10:29.48). Megan Maceratini and Lynsey Ardingo took first and second, respectively, in the 5000-meter run, as Maceratini crossed the finish line in 17:39.62 and Ardingo in 17:43.20. Both times are provisionally qualifying marks.Sarah Kulczycki (first, 38:13.57), Sarah Gryniewicz (second, 39:12.82) and Lauren Fitch (fourth, 40:12.41) dominated the 10,000-meter run with three top-four finishes. Candice Wheat, Danielle Fonseca and Ali Beach finished third, fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 100-meter hurdles. Four Lakers earned points in the 400-meter hurdles, led by Fonseca’s time of 1:01.99, which hits the provisionally qualifying mark. Heather VanderSlik won the high jump, clearing a height of 5’6". GVSU had the top four finishers in the pole vault, with Dianna Noonan’s height of 12’9.5" claiming the top spot. In the hammer throw, Emily Fox and Kathie Posa took second and third, respectively, with distances of 180’1" and 178’10". Mary Bogner took the javelin throw with a distance of 144’4".

Hillsdale College’s women’s track team finished in the top six in team scoring at this week’s 2008 GLIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The women’s team with sixth with 57 points. Freshman Marta Schiewe took second overall in the 400 meter dash with a time of 56.17, which is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. She then finished third in the 200 meter dash, clocking in at 25.08 seconds. Katie Hunt was fifth in the long jump with a mark of 17 feet, 3 1/2 inches. Senior Kristin Donovan took second in the javelin throw with a toss of 141 feet, 1 inch.
Senior Jen Gunderson earned a provisional qualifying mark in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:40.71, which was good for fifth place at the GLIAC meet.

Sophomore Katie Scott (Mitchell, Ont.) placed second and met the NCAA Provisional Qualifying Time by clocking a time of 11:23.67 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase during the first day of competition at the GLIAC Championships. Scott finished behind Saginaw Valley State sophomore Maggie Stalker, who posted an 11:18.37. Scott’s fastest time of the year is 11:16.45. Scott also placed sixth in the 3,000-meter run (10:29.91) on Friday...Sophomore Amanda Pieczynski (Posen, Mich.) improved upon her women’s 100-meter dash school record by placing 15th in :12.75...Sophomore Jill Walton (Kingsley, Mich.) shattered her own javelin throw record, placing third with a throw of 128-7...Sophomore Ashley Quick (Harbor Springs, Mich.) placed fifth in the women’s 5,000-meter run (18:43.53)...Freshman Shelby LaBuhn (Ubly, Mich.) and freshman Taylor Patton (Northwood, Ohio) tied for ninth in the high jump (1.53m).

Michigan Tech senior Andrea Metz won the 1,500 meter run in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:38.33 at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference outdoor track and field championships Friday (May 2). The win was the first by a Michigan Tech female at the GLIAC track and field championships since Erin Ballun won the high jump in 2006. Metz also finished eighth in the 3,000 meter run (10:50.94).Ballun finished second in the event at this year’s meet with a jump of 5-6. She tied with two other women with a height of 5-6 but finished second due to the number of misses.Laura Kangas posted a seventh place finish in the 5,000 meter run in a time of 19:38.75.

NMU finished in seventh place with 47 points.Leslie Luehmann who set a GLIAC and NMU record (4716 points) by winning the heptathlon at the Gina Relays at Hillsdale College will participate at the NCAA II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships which will be held in Pomona, Calif. from May 22-24. The event counted for the GLIAC Championships. Danielle St. Onge took eighth place in the 100-meter dash. She set a new NMU record in the prelims with a 12.52 and then went a 12.70 in the finals. She then took sixth in the 200 with a 26.30 after running a 25.95 in the prelims. Kaylee Laakso set a new NMU record with a 57.51 in the finals of the 400 for a third-place finish. Danielle Stein turned in a time of 40:36.58 in the 10,000 run for a fifth-place finish. Natalie Bertucci ran a 15.08 in the finals of the 100 hurdles for a new NMU record. She placed seventh in the event. Jessica Trotochaud broke her own school record in the 400 hurdles in the prelims by running to a 1:05.28. In the finals, Trotochaud, placed eighth with a time of 1:06.55. Kyle Richards in the 3,000 steeplechase covered the course in a time of 12:06.93 which placed her eighth in the event. Luehmann jumped to a new NMU record in the triple jump with a leap of 35-06.75 for a fourth-place showing. St. Onge was sixth in the triple jump (34-11.00). Angie Leckson threw 117-10 in the javelin for seventh while teammate Callie Boik was eighth (117-01). Leckson with a throw of 41-0.50 in the shot put was eighth. The NMU 4x100 relay of St. Onge, Laakso, Brittnee Balbierz and Stephanie Boyer ran a 48.90 which was a new school record for a sixth-place showing. Laakso, Balbierz, Maegan Hendershot and Trotochaud placed fifth with a clocking of 4:03.67 in the 4x400.

The Northwood University track and field teams competed at the GLIAC Championships Thursday and Friday (May 1-2).The two-day event was hosted by Saginaw Valley State University.On the women’s side, Kylen Cieslak (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) finished third in the 5,000 with a time of 17:57.29. Sarah Glowacki (Freeland, Mich.) finished fourth in the javelin with a toss of 126-07, breaking a 22-year old school record in the process.

The SVSU women’s track team finished in fifth place at the GLIAC Outdoor Championships with a total of 81.5 points Friday afternoon at Morley Field.
Becca Rudey (Wixom, Mich./Walled Lake Western) led a group of Friday performers with a first place finish in the 3000 Meters with a time of 10:15.6.Several other standouts had strong placed in several events, led by Leighann Dowell (Millington, Mich.), who finished third in the Triple Jump and fourth in the 400 Meter Hurdles.Kali Briggs (Jackson, Mich./Vandercook Lake) joined Dowell in the 400 Hurdles, placing fifth and also finished with a sixth place finish in the High Jump competition.Sjonne Mitchell (Clarkston, Mich./Troy) ran in three events, placing seventh in the 400 Meters, eighth in the 200 Meters, and helped the Cardinals’ 4 X 100 relay team to a fourth place finish.Jessica Sweeney also placed in multiple events, finishing fourth in the 800 Meters and helping the 4 X 400 relay team to a third place finish. Sweeney was joined on the 4 X 400 relay team by Ashley Coppens (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley), who finished fourth in the 400 Meter Hurdles, and Courtney Kotewa (Essexville, Mich./Garber), who finished sixth in the 800 Meters.
