At last weekend’s Northeast Ohio Championships at the University of Akron the Eagles were second among four teams. Akron had the best team score, followed by AU. Kent State and Youngstown State were also in the field…sophomore Abby Kacsandi (Wooster, OH) was first in the high jump (5-7.75) and second in the triple jump (35-4.50). Kascandi played basketball this year. She is a transfer from Ohio University. Kascandi competed in track and field for the Bobcats in 2006-07…junior Alissa Klaehn (Brunswick, OH) continues to be one of AU’s most versatile performers. At Akron, she was second in the 4X100 relay (47.48) and the 100 hurdles (14.00). The junior was third in the 200 (25.27) and long jump (18-6.0). Sophomore Steph Abbott (North Royalton, OH) was the runnerup in the long jump (18-7.25) and senior Shalen Boyer (Germantown, OH/Valleyview) was the silver medalist in the high jump (5-5.0). Sophomore Lisa Roth (Rittman, OH/Norwayne) was second in the 400 hurdles (1:06.75)…in last week’s NCAA Division II power rankings the Eagles were 14th…this coming weekend (Apr. 18-19) the Eagles will travel to Cincinnati for the All-Ohio Championships.

  The Ferris State University men’s outdoor track and field team returned to action by sending student-athletes to two large meets at NCAA Division I schools this past weekend (April 11-12).The Bulldogs sent a contingent of competitors to the prestigious 42nd annual Sea Ray Relays hosted by the University of Tennessee on Friday and Saturday at Tom Black Track inside LaPorte Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn. The large meet included athletes from all levels of competition.The Bulldog men’s team registered a ninth-place overall performance in the distance medley relay (10:36.94).Senior Jared Kelsh (Chippewa Lake/Chippewa Hills) took 22nd place in the 1,500 meters (4:00.37), junior Mike Mangieri (Big Rapids) was 22nd in the 10,000 meters (34:07.37) and sophomore Curtis Begley (Ann Arbor/Saline) placed 23rd in the 10,000 meters (35:33.96). Sophomore Matt Jozwiak (Berkley) finished 40th in the 800 meters (1:57.68), junior Brian Williams (Detroit) placed 46th in the 400 meters (52.21) and junior Joe Periord (Saline) took 47th place in the 400 meters (53.70). The Bulldogs also sent several student-athletes to the annual Michigan State Spartan Invitational on Saturday in East Lansing, Mich. Senior Dave Czerny (Piedmont, S.D.) led the men’s squad with a runner-up tying effort in the pole vault (15-7). Meanwhile, the Bulldog women were paced by freshman Nikki Wiers’ (Allendale) 16th-place performance in the 800 meters (2:31.13). Czerny’s mark in the vault represents the second-best outdoor performance by a Bulldog men’s competitor in school history.The Bulldogs will next compete in the Northwood Invitational Saturday, April 19, in Midland, Mich.

   The University of Findlay women’s outdoor track and field team competed in two areas of the country on Saturday, April 12. Part of the women’s team went to the Miami Team Challenge in Oxford, Ohio while a select few members of the squad competed in Knoxville, Tennessee at the Sea Ray Relays. In Knoxville, Kirby Blackley once again had a tremendous performance for the Oilers as she recorded the best NCAA Division II mark in the nation thus far during the long jump with a leap of 19’08.75. Her jump, which was the eighth best at the event, was also a NCAA automatic qualifying mark. On Friday, Blackley recorded the fastest NCAA Division II time of the year in the 100 meter hurdles with a NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 13.35. The time also set a new school record for Blackley. Blackley also helped the Oilers 4x400 meter relay team achieve a provisional qualifying time of 3:50.28 en route to an 18th place finish at the Sea Ray Relays. Pamela Bullock, Shannon Williamson and Stephanie Charnigo were the other members of the relay team. Blackley, Bullock, Williamson and Charnigo also did well in the 4x100 meter relay, taking 17th at 47.72 while Kristi Comstock took 23rd in the 800 meter run with a time of 12:16.64. In Miami, the men placed third with 56.5 points while the women took 11th at the event with 18 points. Miami won both sides as the men scored 260.5 points and the women racked up 212 points. On the women’s side at Miami, Kelly Beamer took third in the pole vault at 11’01.75 to lead the squad. Findlay’s 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams added seventh place finishes in their events as the 4x100 team of Lindsey Meredith, Lindsey Schmitmeyer, Sherry Kotesovec and Lisa Kaulfersch raced to a time of 52.25 and the 4x400 team of Jessica Latham, Kotesovec, Meredith and Schmitmeyer crossed the finish line at 4:15.15. Erin Lines added a seventh place finish in the javelin at 122’08 while Schmitmeyer took seventh in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:19.59. The Oilers will be back in action again on April 18-19 at the All-Ohio Championship.

    Grand Valley State University sent student-athletes to compete at the Angelo State David Noble Relays in San Angelo, Tx. and the Chico Twilight Invitational in Chico, Calif. over the weekend. The Lakers met 14 different NCAA qualifying marks over the weekend, continuing to prepare for the NCAA Outdoor National Championships. At the Chico Twilight Invitational, Katherine McCarthy and Katie Alfredson finished in first and third, respectively, in the 800-meter run. McCarthy finished in 2:09.65, while Alfredson crossed the line at 2:14.49. McCarthy also took first in the 1500-meter event with a time of 4:32.51, while Alfredson took fifth at 4:38.46. Both runners qualified for the NCAA Nationals in both events.Lynsey Ardingo was the top finisher in the 10k with a time of 36:37.31 and Megan Maceratini was right behind her, coming in second at 36:38.97. Both of those times were also good enough to qualify. Kelly Crowley picked up a third-place finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:29.24. At the ASU David Noble Relays, the women earned 13 points and finished in seventh place. Dianna Noonan picked up a first place finish in the pole vault, clearing a height of 12’5.25". Ali Beach and Amber Pearsall finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the women’s heptathlon. Back in the state of Michigan, Kathie Posa hit NCAA qualifying marks at the 2008 Spartan Invitational. Posa’s throw of 51.37 meters in the hammer throw hit her qualifying mark and earned her third place in the event.Jenn O’Shesky and Kirsten Nozime took first and second overall in the 400-meter hurdles, with O’Shesky finishing in 1:04.57 and Nozime right behind her at 1:04.76. Maegan Doyen tied for first place in the high jump, clearing 1.63 meters. Mary Bogner took first in the javelin throw with a throw of 40.07 meters.

Chargers

    Despite windchills that dropped below freezing on Saturday, the Hillsdale College Women’s Track & Field team had a very solid outing at the Miami University Team Challenge.The Chargers were led by freshman Marta Scheiwe and senior All-American Kristin Donovan. Scheiwe turned in a 3rd place performance in the 400m Dash, while Donovan recorded two Top-8 performances. Donovan finished 3rd in the Javelin and 8th in the Discus. Other top performers included the Women’s 4x400 elay team (4th), Sarah Kauk (5th – Pole Vault) and Kathryn Hunt (7th – 100m Hurdles).The Chargers will return to action next Saturday at the Eastern Michigan University Invitational in Ypsilanti, MI.

Lakers
   Lake Superior State withdrew from the Spartan Invitational and had planned to attend Saturday’s SVSU Invitational, but was unable to compete due to a bus breakdown just below the Mackinac Bridge. The Laker men’s and women’s teams were reportedly stranded for four hours. The Lakers are scheduled to compete this Saturday at the Northwood Open.

     The Michigan Tech track and field team’s did not participate in the Saginaw Valley State Invitational due to severe weather conditions in Houghton. The team will travel to Duluth, Minn., Thursday, April 17th to take part in the UMD Bulldog Open.

    The Northwood University track and field teams took part in the SVSU Outdoor Collegiate Saturday afternoon (April 12).No team scoring was held at the event, which was held at the Morley Field.For the Northwood women, Ashley Neuhaus (Shepherd, Mich.) clocked a 58.55 to earn the win in the 400. She also placed third in the 200 (26.86). Kylen Cieslak (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) earned the win in the 3,000 (10:27.79), while Jenny Theisen (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) earned the win in the high jump (5-2). NU is back in action Saturday (April 19) when they host the Northwood Open.

Cardinals

    The SVSU women’s track team hosted the SVSU Outdoor Collegiate Open. The Cardinals ended the day with ten first place finishes. Jessica Sweeny (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) took home first in the 800 and 1500 Meter events. Leighann Dowell (Millington, Mich.) won the 100 Meter Hurdles and Long Jump, while LaTille Ross (Opelika, Ala./Alabama St.) won the Shot Put and Javelin and finished second in the Discus. Tasha Balls (Bridgeport, Mich./Buena Vista) won the 100 Meter Dash while Ashley Morrow (Millington, Mich.) took the 200 Meter Dash.In longer distances, Elayna Dush (Sanford, Mich./Meridian) joined Sweeny in the winners circle by taking the 10000 Meters.While Dowell took the 100 Meter Hurdles, Ashley Coppens (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) made it a sweep in the hurdles by winning the 400 Meter Hurdles. Christina Ferguson (Athens, Ont./Thousand Islands) joined Ross and Dowell as winners in the field events by winning the Triple Jump.
