Eagles
Ashland was second last weekend at the Nickoloff Invitational, hosted by the University of Cincinnati. The Eagles posted seven provisional qualifications and one automatic qualification last week. The automatic berth came from Tara Cooper (Circleville, OH/Logan Elm) in the hammer. The freshman’s throw measured 180-1. Junior Alissa Klaehn (Brunswick, OH) reached the provisional list in both the 200 dash (24.68) and 400 dash (55.89). Junior Elise Bottarini (Lancaster, OH) reached provisional status in both the hammer (165-7) and shot put (45-9.25). Cooper’s effort of 44-10.75 in the shot put was also good for a provisional qualification. Freshman Carrie Laubender (Tiffin, OH/Columbian) is on the provisional chart for the first time thanks to a throw of 164-4 in the hammer. Junior Michelle Stark (Amherst, OH/Steele) recorded a throw of 169-8 in the hammer and that’s a provisional qualification…AU will be at the University of Akron this coming weekend (Apr. 12) for the Northeast Ohio Championships.

The Ferris State University women’s track and field squad came away with five first-place performances as the squad hosted its annual Bulldog Invitational Saturday (April 5) at FSU’s Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich.The non-scoring meet, which serves as the Bulldogs’ lone home event of the season, took place under sunny skies and a brisk wind. The large field included student-athletes from Ferris, Grand Valley State, Saginaw Valley State, Northwood, Northern Michigan, Calvin, Adrian, Alma, Aquinas, Hope, Lansing Community College, Macomb Community College, Lake Superior State as well as several other unattached participants.The Bulldog women claimed five championships with four coming on an individual basis. Senior Kamitra Carroll (Flint/Carman-Ainsworth) won the shot put (45-1), senior Amy Woodman (Bristol, U.K.) was victorious in the long jump (18-7), junior Krystle Wilson (Detroit/Trinity Catholic) emerged with the title in the 200 meters (25.95) and sophomore Emily Cross
(Riley/Armada) took first place in the high jump (5-6).The Ferris women also won the 4x100-meter relay (48.75).Woodman added to her first-place effort in the long jump by placing third in the 100 meters (12.62) and sixth in the 200 meters (26.74). Freshman Marva Goodson (Saginaw/Bridgeport) was second in the long jump (17-2.25) and fifth in the 100 meters (12.76), senior Dia Price (Mt. Morris/Beecher) finished fourth in the triple jump (34-0.75) and freshman Tina Muir (St.Albans, U.K.) placed tied for fourth overall in the 3,000 meters (10:39.60).Ferris State is next scheduled to take part in a pair of meets. The Bulldogs will send student-athletes to the Tennessee Sea Ray Relays slated for Friday and Saturday (April 11-12) in Knoxville, Tenn. Other team members will compete in the Saginaw Valley State Invitational on Saturday (April 12) starting at 11 a.m. (EDT) in University Center, Mich.

Oilers
The University of Findlay women’s outdoor track and field team completed the Oliver Nickoloff Invitational on Saturday, April 5 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The women placed fourth with 55.5 points.Kirby Blackley had a pair of second place finishes while Jessica Latham also took a silver to lead the Oilers.Blackley was second in the 100 meter dash at 12.13 and teamed with Pamela Bullock, Shannon Williamson and Stephanie Charnigo to take the runner up award in the 4x100 meter dash with a time of 48.00.She also added a fourth place finish in the 200 meter dash at 24.74 while Bullock took fifth in the same event with a time of 24.76. Latham finished second in the 1500 meter run at 4:42.84 while Kristi Comstock took third in the same event with a time of 4:43.34. Kelly Beamer broke her own school record in the pole vault after finishing third with a mark of 11’07.75 while Kirstin Weible took fifth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:46.93 and Lisa Kaulfersch came in seventh in the triple jump at 32’11.25. Erin Lines added ninth place finishes in the shot put at 41’05.00 and the discus at 131’11.00 while Charnigo was ninth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:18.79 and Kristina Jeffries took ninth in the javelin after a heave of 92’09.00. The Oilers will be back in action again on April 11-12 when they compete in the Miami Team Challenge in Oxford, Ohio.

Grand Valley State University had student-athletes competing at two different venues over the weekend and came away with three qualifying marks for the NCAA Outdoor National Championships. Two throwers qualified in Big Rapids, Mich., and a pole vaulter hit the mark at Missouri Southern.In Big Rapids at the Ferris Invite, both Kathie Posa and Mary Bogner qualified for nationals in throwing events. Posa hit the mark in the hammer throw, while Bogner hurled the javelin 136’10" to win the event and qualify for nationals.Dianna Noonan qualified in the pole vault, competing at Missouri Southern. Noonan cleared 11’10" to tie for second place.Grand Valley State also had some top finishers at the Ferris State meet. Rebecca Winchester finished in 4:51.36 to take the 1500 meter run, while Susie Rivard finished third in the event at 4:53.23. Danielle Fonseca won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.79 seconds. Jenn O’Shesky took second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.41. Kelly Crowley and Jessie Vickers took second and third, respectively, in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Heather VanderSlik finished second in the high jump with a heighth of 5’4".

The 2008 Outdoor Track & Field season started in earnest Saturday, as the Hillsdale College Women’s Track & Field team traveled to Purdue University for the Mike Poehlein Invitational. Junior Sarah Kauk, who recorded a NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark and new school record in the Pole Vault, led the Chargers. Kauk cleared 3.70m (12’ 1 ½”) to finish 3rd in the meet. Her effort currently ranks her 6th nationally. The Chargers also received standout performances from Kristin Donovan, Jen Gunderson and Marta Scheiwe. Donovan, a 2007 All-American in the javelin, finished 3rd in her event, while Gunderson finished 4th in the 800 Run and 6th in the 1500m Run. In the sprints, Scheiwe finished 2nd in the 100m Dash and 3rd in the 200m Dash.Other Top-8 performers included Hannah Agauas (3rd – Steeplechase), Sarah Steiner (5th – 400m Hurdles), Gwen Buchhop (6th – Javelin Throw), Anna Leutheuser (7th – Javelin Throw), Christina Bailey (8th – 400m Hurdles) and Circe Cansino (8th – 400m Dash). The Chargers will travel to Oxford, OH next weekend for a meet at Miami University.

LSSU sophomore Katie Scott (Mitchelle, Ont.) won the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:43.47 and tied for fourth in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:39.60 at Saturday’s Bulldog Invitational...Sophomore Ashley Quick (Harbor Springs, Mich.) was seventh in the 3,000-meter run, finishing in 10:58.09...Sophomore Jill Walton (Kingsley, Mich.), who missed the basketball season due to a knee injury, broke her own school 6. She also set a new javelin record of 93-2 during the second attempt of the season and her career. She placed eighth and 14th in the two events, respectively...Sophomore Amanda Pieczynski (Posen, Mich.) improved upon her own 200-meter dash record, placing seventh in :26.88...Freshman Taylor Patton (Northwood, Ohio) was second in the triple jump (35-4), and eighth in the high jump (5-0) and long jump (15-4)...Freshman Angela Perry (Lansing, Mich.) placed seventh in the 5,000-meter run (20:45.92)...Complete meet results were unavailable...The Lakers compete Saturday at the Spartan Invitational in East Lansing.

Sophomore Erin Ballun broke her own school record to win the high jump at the UW-Oshkosh Invite with a leap of 5' 6.5". She also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with her performance. Senior Andrea Metz enjoyed another strong day in the distance events finishing third in the 1,500 meter run in a time of 4:54.81. She also finished fourth in the 5,000 meter run in 18:35.86. Both times were a new season best. The team will compete this Saturday (April 12) at the Saginaw Valley State Invitational.

The SVSU women’s track & field had 12 individual top five finishers and two top five finishes in relays at the Bulldog Invitational at Ferris State Saturday. Becca Rudey (Wixom, Mich./Walled Lake Western) took home the Cardinals’ lone first place finish in the 3000 Meter event with a time of 10:18.82, which was more than seven seconds better than her nearest competitor. Joining her in front was Maggie Stalker (Oscoda, Mich.), who finished third in the event.The Cardinal runners came through on the short distance events, with Sjonne Mitchell (Clarkston, Mich./Troy) coming away with fourth place finishes in the 100 and 200 Meter events, while Ashley Coppens (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) and Kali Briggs (Jackson, Mich./Vandercook Lake) finished in third and fifth place respectively in the 400 Meter Hurdle. Leighann Dowell (Millington, Mich.) finished in fifth place in the 100 Meter Hurdles. In the relay events, the Cardinals took a third place finish in the 4X400 Meters and fourth place in the 4X100 Meters. Amber Catlin (Alma, Mich.) joined Rudey and Stalker as a strong distance event option with a third place in the 5000 Meters. SVSU also had a number of good finishes in the field events. LaTille Ross (Opelika, Ala./Alabama St.) came away with a second place finish in the Javelin Throw, while Briggs added to her day with a fifth place finish in the event.The Cardinals also did well in the Pole Vault, as Heather Schmitz (Brighton, Mich.) and Stacey Westphal (Corunna, Mich.) finished in third and fifth respectively.SVSU will return to the track on April 12 when they host the SVSU Invitational at Morley Field.
