The Ferris State University women’s track and field program opened the 2008 outdoor campaign by sending student-athletes to the prestigious adidas Raleigh Relays hosted by North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N.C.FSU took part in the two-day weekend (March 28-29) competition, which wrapped up Saturday at NC State’s newly-renovated Derr Track on the North Carolina State campus. The field included a number of schools from all levels of competition including NCAA Division I institutions such as NC State, North Carolina, Michigan State, West Virginia, Charlotte, Hampton, Syracuse, Seton Hall, George Mason, BUffalo and Temple among others.Freshman Megan Josey (Spring Lake) was the highest finisher for the women’s squad as she placed third overall in section three of the 5,000 meters (19:01.22).Sophomore Emily Cross (Riley/Armada) placed 10th in the high jump (5-5), which also represents the fifth-best tying figure on the school’s all-time outdoor list in the event.
Senior Kamitra Carroll (Flint/Carman-Ainsworth) took seventh place in the shot put (45-2.50) and was 13th overall in the hammer throw (144-1). Junior Mikinzie Stuart (Saginaw/Nouvel) placed 14th in section two of the 1,500 meters (4:53.14).In relay action, the Ferris women were 13th in the sprint medley relay (4:34.99) and 18th in the 4x100-meter relay (50.33).The Ferris State team returns home to host the annual Bulldog Invitational Saturday, April 5, at FSU’s Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich. Action begins at 10:30 a.m. (EDT).

The University of Findlay women’s outdoor track and field team completed the Yellow Jacket Open in Cedarville, Ohio on Saturday, March 29. On the women’s side, Erin Lines, Ashley Jennings, Jessica Latham and Lindsey Schmitmeyer all took home first place finishes for the Oilers. Lines was first in the shot put at 42’00.50, Jennings captured the gold in the hammer throw at 148’10.00, Latham took first in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:53.35 and Schmitmeyer claimed the first place prize in the 400 meter dash at 1:00.74. Kelly Beamer added a second place finish in the pole vault with a mark of 10’00.00 while Lisa Kaulfersch was third in the triple jump at 31’09.50 and Randi Depp took third in the discus at 112’02.00.

Grand Valley State University had student-athletes competing at the Grand Rapids Open and at the Missouri Relays over the weekend, and the teams came back with some high marks. Candice Wheat set a school record in the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 13.79 seconds, an NCAA qualifying mark. Two other Lakers also qualified over the weekend. In addition, the student-athletes that went to Missouri spent Thursday volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club in town.Wheat were part of the squad that went to Columbia, Mo. and spent Thursday doing activities with the kids at the Boys and Girls Club. The team and coach Ray Williams also held a track clinic to help them learn different drills.Other members of the Grand Valley State University competed at Houseman Field in Grand Rapids, Mich. Two Lakers met the NCAA qualifying mark at the meet. Lynsey Ardingo finished with a time of 10:14.40 in the 3000-meter event to qualify. She was joined by Katherine McCarthy, who qualified with a time of 4:36.74 in the 1500-meter.

The Charger Women’s Track & Field team picked up several strong performances on Saturday at the Mike Poehlein Invitational, held at Purdue University. The Lady Chargers picked up eleven Top-10 finishes, including Top-3 finishes by Jazmin Williams and Kathryn Hunt. Williams, who is one of the most versatile athletes in the nation, picked up two runner-up finishes for the Chargers. Williams faced stiff headwinds in both the 100m Dash and the 200m Dash, while still posting times of 12.67 seconds and 25.31 seconds, respectively. Interestingly, the only sprinter to beat Williams was an athlete from Notre Dame, who is one of the top sprinters in the Big East conference. Freshman Kathryn Hunt posted a solid mark in the Long Jump, jumping 5.37m to finish 3rd, while Kristin Donovan just missed NCAA Provisional Qualifying marks in the javelin and discus to finish 6th and 9th, respectively. Other Top-10 performances forhe Lady Chargers included: Aubrey Calligan (Triple Jump – 5th), Krista Pfautz (Long Jump – 6th), the 4x400 relay team (6th), Ashley DeJonge (High Jump – 8th), Sarah Kauk (Pole Vault – 9th), and Alissa Hall (1,500m Run – 10th).The Chargers return to action next weekend, as they travel to Ohio University for the Ohio University Invitational on Saturday.

The Michigan Tech track and field team opened the 2007 slate Saturday (March 31) at the Sherman-Lukoski Invitational. The MTU men finished second out of eight schools with 104 points while the women placed fourth our of eight teams by tallying 76.5 points. The Huskies will return to action on Friday (Apr. 6) at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational. The meet will start at 4 p.m.

The SVSU women’s track team finished second in the Gene and Rose Edmonds Invitational Saturday afternoon at St. Joseph’s College. The Cardinals finished in second with a total of 172 points.Becca Rudey (Wixom, Mich./Walled Lake Western) took home first in the 1500 and 3000 Meter events, with teammates Courtney Kotewa (Essexville, Mich./Garber) and Amber Catlin (Alma, Mich.) right behind in the 1500 while Catlin also finished in second place in the 3000. Ashley Coppens (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) won the 400 Meter Hurdles in front of teammates Kali Briggs (Jackson, Mich./Vandercook Lake) and Amie Wilson (Linden, Mich.). LaTille Ross (Opelika, Ala./Alabama St.) won first place in the Javelin Throw.Maggie Stalker (Oscoda, Mich.) found her way to the winner’s circle with a first place finish in the 5000 Meters with a time of 19:57.61, while Stacey Westphal (Corunna, Mich.) did the same in the Pole Vault with a vault of 10 feet.Along with the first place finishers, the Cardinals also featured several team members that placed in multiple events. Ross built on her first place finish in the javelin competition with a third place in the Shot Put and provisionally qualified in the event. Emily Nugent (Benzonia, Mich./Benzie Central) took home third place in the Hammer Throw and fourth place in the Discus Throw, while Briggs added a third place finish in the high jump to her second place finish in the 400 Hurdles.The Cardinals finished just eight points out of first place, with St. Joseph’s (152) and Indianapolis (119) rounding out the four competing teams.Saginaw Valley returns to the track on Apr. 5 for the Ferris State Invitational in Big Rapids, Mich.
