Ashland was ranked first in last week’s national power rankings, that’s the fifth consecutive week AU has been on top of the poll…at the GLIAC Championships, AU was second. Senior Jennifer Tinney (Norwalk, OH/Western Reserve) was honored as the women’s field athlete of the meet. Tinney claimed a championship in the shot put…last week the Eagles posted eight improvements on their NCAA qualification list. AU has eight automatic qualifications for nationals. Tinney will compete in the weight throw and shot put as will freshman Tara Cooper (Circleville, OH/Logan Elm) and junior Elise Bottarini (Lancaster, OH). Junior Michelle Stark (Amherst, OH/Steele) has an automatic berth in the weight throw and junior Alissa Klaehn (Brunswick, OH) will compete in the 60 meter hurdles. Cooper won a GLIAC championship in the weight throw. She is the national leader in the weight throw (65-7.25) and has the fourth best mark in the shot put (48-5). Tinney has the third best throw in the shot (49-11.25).

Bulldogs
The Ferris State University women’s indoor track and field team tallied 15 top-eight performances in the 2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships, which were held Friday and Saturday (Feb. 29-March 1) in Findlay, Ohio. The Bulldog women scored 53 points in finishing fifth overall of nine competing teams.Bulldog senior Amy Woodman (Bristol, U.K.) paced the women’s team by placing among the top eight finishers in four events. She captured All-GLIAC honors with a third-place finish in the long jump (18-3.25) and also placed fifth in the 55 meters (7.40), sixth in the 200 meters (25.89) along with sixth in the triple jump (34-9.50). Senior thrower Kamitra Carroll (Flint/Carman-Ainsworth) surpassed national qualification marks while coming in fourth in the shot put (45-8) and sixth in the weight throw (57-7) among a field of high-caliber throwers. Junior Krystle Wilson (Detroit/Trinity Catholic) placed fourth in the 400 meters (58.15) and was fifth in the 200 meters (25.81) for FSU. Freshman Marva Goodson (Saginaw/Bridgeport) also placed in two events as she finished seventh in both the long jump (17-0.50) and the 55 meters (7.47). Junior Mikinzie Stuart (Saginaw/Nouvel) took fifth place in the mile run (5:12.92), freshman Paige Onweller (Lapeer/East) was sixth in the mile (5:17.32) and freshman Megan Josey (Spring Lake) netted a seventh-place effort in the 3,000 meters (10:32.51).
The Bulldog women also placed fifth in both the 4x400-meter relay (4:01.83) in addition to the distance medley relay (12:41.67).
The Bulldog women have three student-athletes on the national qualification lists for the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships slated for March 14-15 in Mankato, Minn. Woodman is an automatic qualifier in the long jump and a provisional qualifier in the 200 meters, Carroll has provisionally qualified in the shot put and reached the automatic mark in the weight throw while Goodson is a provisional qualifier in the long jump. The University of Findlay women’s indoor track and field team completed the 2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship on Saturday, March 1 in the Malcolm Athletic Center, a part of the Koehler Fitness and Recreation Complex. The women’s squad finished third with 102 points.
Head coach Marc Arce was honored as the women’s coach of the year while Kirby Blackley was named the athlete of the meet for the running events. Blackley led the Oilers by winning the 55 meter hurdles with a meet and school record time of 7.76. Her mark was also a NCAA automatic qualifying time. She also teamed with Pamela Bullock, Stephanie Charnigo and Shannon Williamson to win the 4x400 meter relay with a GLIAC record time of 3:51.11, which was a provisional qualifying mark. Blackley, who won the long jump on Friday with a NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 19’03.25, added a silver in the 55 meter dash with a provisional qualifying time of 7.16. Bullock also had a great meet for the Oilers, winning the 55 meter dash with a provisional qualifying time of 7.11 while also taking gold in the 200 meter dash with a NCAA provisional mark of 25.00. Kristi Comstock added a second place finish in the 800 meter run after a provisional qualifying time of 2:15.05 while Jessica Latham placed third in the one mile run at 5:06.78. Erin Lines was fifth in the shot put with a provisional toss of 44’05.25 while Jasmine Dallas finished sixth in the 800 meter run with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 2:18.12. Charnigo added a seventh place mark in the 400 meter dash at 59.47 while Lindsey Schmitmeyer took eighth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:19.81.

Grand Valley State’s 188.50 points were 81.50 ahead of second place en route to their ninth consecutive GLIAC Indoor Track and Field title. Candice Wheat took third place in the 200-meter dash with a provisionally qualifying time of 25.34 seconds. Katherine McCarthy claimed the victory in the 800-meter run with an automatically qualifying time of 2:13.49. Wheat also claimed second in the 55-meter hurdles with an automatic qualifying time of 8.00 seconds.In the distance events, Kelly Gibbons won the mile with a provisionally qualifying time of 5:04.68. Alfredson was second with a time of 5:06.08, also provisionally qualifying. Four runners scored in each the 3000-meter run and the 5000-meter run. In the 3k, it was Samantha Gordon (1st-10:14.28), Megan Maceratini (2nd-10:14.75). In the 5k, it was Maceratini (1st-17:40.35), Ardingo (4th-17:58.02. GVSU also took fourth in the 4x400-meter relay and first in the distance medley relay. The field events were a big source of points for the Lakers, as well. Stephanie Kurca took first in the triple jump with a distance of 35’9.25". The Lakers took the top three spots in the high jump with Heather VanderSlik winning at 5’5.25", Maegan Doyen coming in second at the same height, and Tanisha Johnson placing third at 5’3.25". Dianna Noonan took first in the pole vault by clearing a height of 12’7.25". In the weight throw, Mary Bogner placed third at 58’8.75".

Chargers
The Chargers were led by freshman Marta Scheiwe and junior Jazmin Williams. Scheiwe captured second-place in the 200m Dash with a NCAA Provisional Qualifying time of 25.11 seconds. That mark currently ranks her 11th in the nation. Scheiwe also captured second-place in the 400m Dash with a time of 57.37 seconds, which ranks 13th nationally. In addition, Scheiwe also anchored the third-place 4x400m Relay team, which set a new school record and provisionally-qualified for NCAA’s with a mark of 3:55.36 seconds. That record-setting team features three true freshmen.
Williams also enjoyed a very successful day for the Chargers. Williams placed third in the 400m Dash with a provisional-qualifying time of 57.52 seconds. A previous effort ranks her 12th and just ahead of Scheiwe in the event. Williams also turned in a fourth-place performance in the 200m Dash, finishing in 25.69 seconds. And, like Scheiwe, she turned in a gutsy performance as part of the school record-setting 4x400m Relay team.Two of the biggest surprises of the meet came from the women’s Distance Medley Relay team and freshman Circe Cansino. The Distance Medley Relay team, which features two freshman, turned in an All-Conference and NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark, as they finished in third-place with a time of 12:19.95. Their previous best was over 15 seconds slower. Cansino, a true freshmen from Idaho, stunned the rest of the GLIAC in the sprints. Cansino entered the meet ranked 12th in the 55m Dash and 15th in the 200m Dash. But, she managed to turn in a fourth-place finish in the 55m Dash, as well as an eight-place finish in the 200m Dash. She also ran a 58 second “split” in the 4x400m Relay. Jen Gunderson, who placed 4th in the Mile and 5th in the 800m Run with a NCAA Provisional Qualifying time of 2:17.82, Kelsey Schuler (5th – Triple Jump), Kristin Donovan (6th – Shot Put), Kathryn Hunt (6th – Long Jump), Chelsea Wackernagel (7th – Pole Vault) and Erin Brunko (6th – 3000m Run, 7th – Mile).
The Chargers will return to action in two weeks at the 2008 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Minnesota State University – Mankato.

Sophomore Katie Scott (Mitchell, Ont.) led LSSU at the GLIAC Indoor Championships with a third-place finish in the 5,000-meter run (17:56.19), while sophomore Ashley Quick (Harbor Springs, Mich.) was seventh in 18:42.58...Scott was also seventh in the 3,000-meter run (10:29.37) and eighth in the mile (5:20.48)...Quick was ninth in the 3K with a time of 10:44.74...Freshman Taylor Patton (Northwood, Ohio) cleared 5-2 ¼ to take sixth in the high jump, while freshman Shelby LaBuhn (Ubly, Mich.) tied for seventh with a jump of 5-1 ¼...Sophomore Amanda Pieczynski (Posen, Mich.) set a school record of :27.00 in the women’s 200-meter dash, and LaBuhn set a new 55-meter hurdles record of :09.35.

The Northern Michigan University women’s track and field team finished in seventh place at the 2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships which were held at the University of Findlay. NMU tallied 37.50 points in the two-day event. NMU had 10 points going into Saturday’s events. The ‘Cats were tied with SVSU for sixth place after the first day. “I am very proud of the team,” said head coach Tom Barnes. “They worked hard and we competed each day.” Kaylee Laakso placed fifth in the 400-meter dash in a new NMU record time of 58.84. Natalie Bertucci was fifth in the 55 hurdles (8.52).The NMU 4x400 relay of Brittnee Balbierz, Laakso, Jessica Trotochaud and Erin VanEnkevort ran a 4:11.25 which was good for seventh place.The triple jump saw the ‘Cats pick up 14 points as Danielle St. Onge was second with a jump of 35-07.75 and teammate Leslie Luehmann third (35-06.75). Karin Diebold set a new NMU record in the pole vault (10-01.50) as she just missed scoring points for the ‘Cats. Angie Leckson made the quick change from the NMU women’s basketball team to the track team as she placed seventh in the shot put with a new NMU record throw of 41-01.75.

The Northwood University track and field team took part in the GLIAC Indoor Championships Saturday afternoon (March 1). Hannah Stone (Lapeer, Mich./East) earned a provisional qualifying mark in the 800. She was seventh in the event with a time of 2:18.16. Christy Kulp (Grand Ledge, Mich.) once again broke her own school record in the weight throw, tossing 45-2.

Cardinals
The Cardinal women’s track team took home sixth at the GLIAC Championships this weekend in Findlay, Ohio, as the usual suspects for the Cardinals again came up big for the team with a couple high finishes. Senior Courtney Kotewa (Essexville, Mich./Garber) took home a third place finish in the 800 meter run with a NCAA Division II Provisional qualifying time of 2:16.00. In the 3000 meter run, senior Becca Rudey (Wixom, Mich./Walled Lake Western) placed third with a time of 10:15.05. Sophomore Maggie Stalker (Oscoda, Mich.) who came in second in the 5000 meter run with a NCAA Division II Provisional qualifying time of 17:49.14. Senior Leighann Dowell (Millington, Mich.) continued her spectacular season with a fourth place finish in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.4 seconds. Senior Kali Briggs (Jackson, Mich./Vandercook Lake) took home a third place finish in the high jump at a height of 5 feet 3.25 inches. For the lucky few Cardinals who qualified for nationals, they will be in action on March 14th and 15th in the NCAA Division II Indoor Nationals at Mankato, Minnesota.
