The AU women got a quality performance from junior Alissa Klaehn (Brunswick, OH) at last week’s All-Ohio Championships, hosted by Findlay. Klaehn earned a berth at nationals in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.64. She was second…freshman Steph Tinney (Norwalk, OH/Western Reserve) was the runnerup in the 400 meters (56.73) and sophomore Jenna Oard (Columbus Grove, OH) placed second in the pole vault (11-8). Jenn Tinney (Norwalk, OH/Western Reserve) finished first in the shot. The senior unleashed a throw of 49-9. Freshman Tara Cooper (Circleville, OH/Logan Elm) was second in the weight throw (61-7.75) and third in the shot (46-9)…the Eagles finished fourth at the All-Ohio Meet with 70 points. Miami had a team score of 166.5 and Cincinnati (106) was second. Ohio State (92) finished third…AU was ranked first in last week’s NCAA Division II power rankings. The Eagles have been the top-ranked team in the nation for two straight weeks.

The women’s indoor track and field team continued its preparation for the upcoming Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships by sending student-athletes to two different meets this past weekend. Senior Amy Woodman (Bristol, U.K.) continued to record impressive results as she won the long jump and broke her own school mark in the process with a leap of 19-10.75 in the event.Senior thrower Kamitra Carroll (Flint/Carman-Ainsworth) was among the top four finishers in a pair of events as she claimed runner-up kudos in the shot put (45-3.50) and took fourth place in the weight throw (55-2.25).Junior Krystle Wilson (Detroit/Trinity Catholic) was fifth in the 200 meters (26.00), freshman Marva Goodson (Saginaw/Bridgeport) placed fifth in the long jump (17-11.50) and sophomore Emily Cross (Riley/Armada) finished fifth in the high jump (5-2.25). The Bulldog women’s squad also recorded a fifth-place effort in the 4x400-meter relay (4:04.47).FSU also sent selected athletes to Friday’s (Feb. 15) Grand Valley State open, which took place inside GVSU’s Fieldhouse Arena in Allendale, Mich. Junior Lauren Rose (Lake Orion) and freshman Nikki Wiers (Allendale) led FSU in Friday’s meet with seventh place performances in the 400 meters (1:06.92) and the 800 meters (2:47.23), respectively.The Bulldogs are slated to take part in Friday’s (Feb. 22) annual Jack Skoog Open hosted by Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant, Mich. The event begins at 5 p.m. (EST) and will be the last tune up for the GLIAC Championships set for Feb. 29 and March 1 in Findlay, Ohio.

The women’s indoor track and field team wrapped up the All-Ohio Championship on Saturday, February 16 in the Malcolm Athletic Center. Kristi Comstock also captured a title at the meet, winning the 800 meter run with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 2:15.78. Kelly Beamer also added a record breaking performance, taking fourth in the pole vault at 11’08.00 to break her own school record in the event. Her vault was also a NCAA provisional qualifying mark.Pamela Bullock and Jessica Latham added fourth place finishes in the 60 meter dash and one mile run respectively as both were NCAA provisional qualifying times.Bullock took fourth in the 60 at 7.71 while Latham was fourth in the mile with a time of 5:06.41. Findlay’s 4x400 meter relay team of Stephanie Charnigo, Shannon Williamson, Bullock and Blackley added a fifth place finish at 3:55.85 while their distance medley relay team of Comstock, Charnigo, Bullock and Latham recorded a second place finish on Friday with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 12:10.75.

Ashley Jager picked up a victory for the Lakers, crossing the line first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.77 seconds. Abbey Zandbergen added a first-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a final time of 1:00.52. Katherine McCarthy took first in the mile run, crossing the finish line at 4:58.03. In the 55-meter hurdles, Danielle Fonseca’s time of 8.45 seconds was the best at the meet, and so was Maegen Doyen’s jump of 5’7" in the high jump. Miranda Farr cleared 12’4" in the pole vault to claim the win. Mary Bogner bested the field with a throw of 59’0.75" in the weight throw.

The 13th-ranked Women’s Track & Field team turned in three first-place finishes, three NCAA Provisional Qualifying performances and one new school record over the weekend.Junior Jazmin Williams led her team to a win in the 4x400m Relay, while also turning in a qualifying performance in the 200m Dash. Williams finished in a winning time of 25.35 seconds.The Chargers also received a first-place finish from pole vaulter Sarah Kauk, who barely missed at 3.74m.On Saturday at the Eastern Michigan University Classic, school record-holder Anna Leutheuser bettered herself to 16.04m in the 20# Weight Throw. Leutheuser’s teammate, Kelsey Schuler, also turned in a 4th place finish in the Triple Jump for the Lady Chargers at the meet.Other top finishers at the Findlay Open included Marta Scheiwe, who provisionally qualified in the 200m Dash and placed third, Jen Gunderson (2nd – Mile), Kathryn Hunt (2nd – 60m Hurdles), Amy Luke (3rd – 800m Run), Erin Brunko (3rd – 3000m Run) and Kristin Donovan (3rd – Shot Put).The Chargers will undergo their final tune-up next Saturday at the University of Michigan, before heading to the University of Findlay for the 2008 GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Sophomore Amanda Pieczynski (Posen, Mich.) clocked a :27.34 to break Lake Superior State’s school record in the women’s 200-meter dash and place 21st in the event at Saturday’s EMU Classic in Ypsilanti, Mich. Pieczynski broke the previous record of :27.35 set by Celina Grondin in 2006...Freshman Taylor Patton (Northwood, Ohio) was ninth in the triple jump with a leap of 33-7 ¼...The Lakers compete Friday at the Jack Skoog Open in Mount Pleasant.

Feb. 16 the women’s track and field team competed at the Lake Superior Challenge which was held at St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn.Danielle St. Onge (7.49) and Brittnee Balbierz (7.64) running in the finals of the 55-meter dash finished in third and seventh place respectively. In the 200 dash Kaylee Laakso with a time of 26.73 was second and came back to place third in the 400. In the 5,000 Michele Bisig (1912.51) was second and Brittney Coehoorn (19:18.33) fourth. Natalie Bertucci in the finals of the 55 hurdles won the event with a time of 8.66 and in third was Leslie Luehmann (8.82). The field events saw Bertucci (5-01.00) place third in the high jump. Luehmann took the long jump with a leap of 17-11.00. St. Onge (16-10.75) was fourth in the event and then took third in the triple jump (33-09.25). Krista Squiers was the top placing ‘Cat in the weight throw with a heave of 45-00.25 which was good for seventh. The ‘Cats are preparing for the GLIAC 2008 Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships next week (Feb. 29-March 1) which will be held at The University of Findlay.

The Timberwolves were idle this past week and will return to action on Friday, Feb. 22 when they travel to Central Michigan in Mt. Pleasant for the Jack Skoog Open which gets underway at 5 pm.

The women’s track team was in Ypsilanti on Saturday in the EMU Classic. Junior Sjonne Mitchell (Clarkston, Mich./Troy) had a 14th place finish in the 60 meter dash (8.05 seconds) and then had a ninth place finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.35 in the finals. Senior Courtney Kotewa (Essexville, Mich./Garber) placed 15th in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:23.28 and sophomore Maggie Stalker (Oscoda, Mich.) placed seventh in the 3000 meter run with a time of 10:27.75.Senior Leighann Dowell (Millington, Mich.) had yet another great showing, placing 10th in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.22 seconds and a ninth place in the women’s long jump with a distance of 17 feet 6.25 inches. She finished up the day with a seventh place finish in the triple jump at a distance of 34 feet 6.75 inches.The women’s track team is back in action on February 22nd when they travel to Mt. Pleasant to take place in the Central Michigan University Open.
