  Last week at Findlay, Lisa Roth (Rittman, OH/Norwayne) set the school record in the indoor pentathlon (3239 points)…AU has three automatic qualifiers to the national meet – junior Michelle Stark (Amherst, OH/Steele) in the 20-pound weight throw (59-8.25), freshman Tara Cooper (Circleville, OH/Logan Elm) in the 20-pound weight (63-2.25) and senior Jen Tinney (Norwalk, OH/Western Reserve) in the shot put (49-11.25). The Eagles will compete at the Akron Open on Saturday, Feb. 2.

 The Ferris State University women’s indoor track and field team received two national qualifying performances as the Bulldogs sent student-athletes to two different meets across the state this past weekend.Senior thrower Kamitra Carroll (Flint/Carman-Ainsworth) reached the national provisional qualification standard while placing third overall in the 20-pound weight throw (53-9.25) on Saturday (Jan. 26) at the University of Michigan’s Simmons-Harvey Invitational held in Ann Arbor, Mich.Senior newcomer Amy Woodman (Bristol, U.K.) surpassed the automatic qualifying mark and set a new school record in the long jump (19-3.25).Besides her third-place finish in the weight throw, Carroll also claimed fourth place in the shot put (42-3.25) at the Michigan meet. Junior Mikinzie Stuart (Saginaw/Nouvel) took fourth place in the mile run (5:17.54), junior Krystle Wilson (Detroit/Trinity Catholic) was fourth in the 400 meters (1:00.16) and sophomore Emily Cross (Riley/Armada) finished fifth in the high jump (5-2.25).Freshman Marva Goodson (Saginaw/Bridgeport) came in fifth in the long jump (17-6.25). The Ferris women’s team also had seven top-five overall finishes while sending part of the squad to Friday’s (Jan. 25) Grand Valley State Bob Eubanks Open held inside the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena at Allendale, Mich. Junior Jenelle Keinath (Millington/Valley Lutheran) won the 3,000 meters (11:34.51) and fellow junior Ashley Lehmann (Grand Rapids/Grandville) claimed runner-up laurels (11:44.70) in the same event.Senior Dia Price (Mt. Morris/Beecher) was fourth in the long jump (16-7) and tied for fifth place in the high jump (4-11). Freshman Paige Onweller (Lapeer/East) placed fifth in the mile run (5:29.91) with freshman Kiara Johnson (Lowell/East Kentwood) coming in fifth overall in the 800 meters (2:32.14). The Bulldog women also were third in the 4x400-meter relay (4:21.96).The Bulldogs will be in action again Friday and Saturday, Feb. 1-2, as they take part in the annual Division II Team Challenge hosted by Saginaw Valley State in University Center, Mich.

Oilers
 The Oilers hosted their Findlay Classic last weekend…Kirby Blackley won the 60 meter hurdles with a school and fieldhouse record time of 8.48…Her performance in the event was also a NCAA Division II automatic qualifying time as well as a USA indoor track and field championship qualifying mark…She also teamed with Pamela Bullock, Lindsey Schmitmeyer and Stephanie Charnigo to win the 4x400 meter relay with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:57.15…Bullock also picked up a first place finish for Findlay, taking the gold in the 200 meter dash with a NCCA provisional qualifying time of 25.34 and added a fourth place finish in the 60 meter dash after racing her way to a time of 7.82…Charnigo added a second place finish in the 400 meter dash at 58.15 while Jasmine Dallas and Kristi Comstock were second in the 800 meter run and 1000 meter run with times of 2:21.12 and 3:00.54 respectively…Schmitmeyer added a fourth place finish in the 600 meter run with a time of 1:39.28 while Erin Lines was fourth in the shot put after a NCAA provisional qualifying heave of 43’09.75 and Jessica Latham took fourth in the one mile run at 5:12.72.

  Grand Valley State hosted the 2008 Bob Eubanks Open Friday evening at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers won nine events and improved on several NCAA DII provisional marks. GVSU will next be in action at the Division II Challenge at Saginaw Valley State next Friday (Feb. 1) and Saturday (Feb. 2).GVSU tallied the top three places in the 400. Kirsten Nozime finished first (59.33), followed by Katie Mandziara in second (59.47) and Stephanie McCarthy in third (1:02.52). Katherine McCarthy won the mile by over 15 seconds as she crossed the finish line in 5:07.11. Sara Parks was second with a time of 5:22.48. Katherine McCarthy then claimed top honors in the 800 with a time of 2:16.78. Candice Wheat led a GVSU 1-2-3 finish in the 55 hurdles with a time of 8.36. Danielle Fonseca was second (8.70) and Jen Tulpa third (8.73).GVSU opened the field events by sweeping the top four places in the high jump. Tanisha Johnson, Maegan Doyen and Heather VanderSlik all jumped 5-03. The Lakers dominated the pole vault, taking five of the top six places. Miranda Farr finished first and met the NCAA DII provisional mark with a vault of 12:04.00. Dianna Noonan was second and also met the provisional qualifying mark (11:06.25), while Jennifer VanderMeer finished third with an NCAA provisional (11:06.25). Ashley Smith and Christi Kettelhut finished fifth and sixth with a vault of 10:06.25. Emily Fox claimed first-place honors, set a school-record and met the NCAA DII provisional qualifying mark with a throw of 46-04.00 in the shot put. Mary Bogner was third (40-08.25). Kathie Posa finished first in the weight throw (57-11.25), while Bogner was second (57-03.50).

Chargers
 The Chargers 4x400m Relay team, which features a junior and three true freshman, recorded an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark of 3:57.70 to finish in third place. The team of Jazmin Williams, Circe Cansino, Sarah Steiner and Marta Scheiwe finished just .55 out of first place. Their effort currently ranks as the 9th best performance in NCAA Div. II. Scheiwe finished 3rd in the 60m Dash, with a time of 7.81 seconds. Senior captain Jen Gunderson turned in a pair of impressive performances for the Chargers. On Friday night, Gunderson was part of a victorious Distance Medley Relay team. Then, on Saturday afternoon, Gunderson claimed first place in the 800m Run with a time of 2:20.62.Other top performers for the Chargers included Chelsea Wackernagel finished 4th in the Pole Vault, Amy Luke (5th – 800), Circe Cansino (5th – LJ), Sarah Kauk (5th – PV), Jazmin Williams (6th – 60), Marion Gabl (6th – 5000), Kelsey Schuler (7th – TJ), Erin Brunko (8th – Mile) and Katie Christiansen (8th – LJ).The Chargers return to action next weekend at the Div. II Challenge, hosted by Saginaw Valley State University

  Freshman shot putter Mary McLeod (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) and sophomore miler Katie Scott (Mitchell, Ont.) were LSSU’s first-place finishers at the 2008 Lake State Classic held Saturday. McLeod had a throw of 11.07 meters, while Scott won the mile in 5:25.66 despite struggling with a nagging knee injury...Freshman Taylor Patton (Northwood, Ohio) was second in the high jump (5.20m)...Third-place finishes went to freshman Kimberlee Booms (Harrison, Mich.) in the weight throw (9.37m), freshman Shelby LaBuhn (Ubly, Mich.) in the 55-meter hurdles (:09.38) and sophomore Ashley Quick (Harbor Springs, Mich.) in the 3,000-meter run (11:14.26)...The Lakers compete Friday and Saturday at the DII Challenge at Saginaw Valley State University.

 Leslie Luehmann tied a school record in the high jump with a leap of 5-4 to capture the event. Teammate Natalie Bertucci tied for second place (5-2). Krista Squiers won the weight throw with an effort of 43-7.25. Callie Boik had a throw of 33-0 in the shot put to finish in third place. Luehmann was fourth in the event with a heave of 32-2.
In the mile run the Wildcats had three runners in the top seven. Kristen Schultz was the top ‘Cat in second place with a time of 5:30.74. Jennifer Wiedmeyer was fifth (5:38.90) as she was followed by Michaela Harris in seventh (5:41.19).Bertucci (8.59) and Luehmann (8.66) went one-two in the 55-meter hurdles. Both runners were under the old NMU record time in the event.NMU had the top five finishers in the 800 run. Erin VanEnkevort won the event with a clocking of 2:28.53. Next in the order were Maegan Hendershot (2:28.65), Bibiane Mahy (2:28.85), Kaylee Laakso (2:31.46) and Nicole Bougher (2:32.09). Stephanie Boyer led the charge for the ‘Cats in the 200 with a first-place showing (26.42). NMU had the next five runners. Brittnee Balbiertz was the second runner to cross the finish line (26.72). Others were Luehmann (27.00), Jessica Trotochaud (27.18), Bertucci (27.38) and Danielle St. Onge (27.57). Michele Bisig placed third in the 3,000 with a time of 11:11.52. Danielle Stein was the next ‘Cat to cross the finish line in fifth (11:15.83) as Brittney Coehoorn was sixth (11:17.29).The NMU relay of Balbierz, Laakso, Trotochaud and Boyer won the 4x400 event with a time of 4:06.40. NMU had the top four finishers in the 55 sprint. St. Onge was first with a clocking of 7.56 as she was followed by Balbierz (7.61) and Boyer (7.62) and Trotochaud (7.71).The ‘Cats are back on the track this weekend (Feb. 1-2) at the NCAA II Challenge which will be held at Saginaw Valley State University.

  The women’s track and field team competed in the University of Findlay Open this past weekend. Senior Leighann Dowell (Millington, Mich.) had a top five finish in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.36 seconds. Junior Sjonne Mitchell (Clarkston, Mich.) had a great showing in the 200 meter dash with an eighth place finish and a time of 26.83 seconds. Seniors Courtney Kotewa (Essexville, Mich./Garber) and Brittany Gendron (Brockville, Ont./Thousand Islands) had a great showing in the 800 meter run with a fourth and seventh place finish, respectively. Senior Becca Rudey placed sixth in the mile run with a time of 5:17.92 while Carley Burger (Linden, Mich.) took home an eighth place finish in the 3000 meter run with a time of 11:12.76 and Elayna Dush (Sanford, Mich./Meridian) finished the 5000 meter run in a time of 19:13.91, good for seventh place.In the field events, Heather Schmitz (Brighton, Mich.) had yet another good showing, finishing 10th in the pole vault at a height of 10 feet 2 inches. Leighann Dowell took a sixth place finish home in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet 11.75 inches and also collected a top 20 finish in the shot put at a distance of 37 feet 3.75 inches. Leighann Dowell finished seventh in the women’s heptathlon and it included a second place finish in the 60 meter dash and a victory in the shot put with a distance of 36 feet 0.75 inches.The next meet for the Cardinals is back at home in the Ryder Center when Saginaw Valley State University holds the NCAA Division II Team Challenge on February 1st and 2nd.
