Eagles
The Eagles competed at Ohio Northern last Friday (Jan. 18). The Ashland women finished second among seven teams with 173 points. Dayton (245.5) was first. Findlay (142) was third.Stephanie Tinney (Norwalk, OH/Western Reserve) accounted for 25 points with four victories. She led the field in the 300 and 400 and the 4 X 200 and 4 X 400.“After a four-week winter break it was good to get back on the track to see where everyone’s fitness level is leading into All-Ohio and GLIAC competition,” remarked AU head coach Jud Logan.

Bulldogs
The Ferris State University women’s indoor track and field squad officially opened the 2008 season by taking part in the 20th annual Saginaw Valley State Collegiate Open Friday (Jan. 18) evening inside SVSU’s Ryder Center at University Center, Mich.The Bulldog women’s team notched eight top-five performances in the non-scoring competition. Two FSU women’s student-athletes earned individual meet crowns. Freshman Marva Goodson (Saginaw/Bridgeport) captured the long jump (17-9.75) and junior Krystle Wilson (Detroit/Trinity Catholic) won the 400 meters (1:00.77). Additonally, Goodson placed fourth in the 60 meters (8.25) and Wilson was third in the 200 meters (27.01).
Junior Mikinzie Stuart (Saginaw/Nouvel) earned runner-up honors in the 3,000 meters (10:38.81), freshman Jade Kaufman (Ubly) took second place in the 400 meters (1:01.05) and senior Dia Price (Mt. Morris/Beecher) placed fifth in the triple jump (33-2.50). Senior Sonya White (Allegan) also came in fifth overall in the weight throw (44-5.25). The Bulldogs will next compete in the Grand Valley State Bob Eubanks Open Friday, Jan. 25, beginning at 5 p.m. (EST) in Allendale, Mich.

Oilers
The Oilers took third at Ohio Northern last weekend…Jessica Latham won the 1000 meter run with a time of 3:02.05 while Kristi Comstock crossed the finish line in 2:18.12 during the 800 meter run to pick up a gold in the event…Kelly Beamer also picked up a first place finish in the pole vault with a mark of 11’01.50 while Erin Wright was second in the event at 10’07.50…Kirby Blackley was second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.39 and Stephanie Charnigo was second in the 500 meter run at 1:17.20 while also scoring a third place finish in the 300 meter dash with a time of 43.75…Erin Lines placed second in the shot put with a mark of 43’07.25 and also took third in the weight throw with a heave of 52’02.50 while Pamela Bullock took second in the 300 meter dash with a time of 42.95 and also finished third in the 55 meter dash at 7.31.

Grand Valley State competed in the Mike Lints Laker Challenge this past week, and will now look forward to the Bob Eubanks Open this coming Friday. Three Grand Valley State track and field team members qualified for the NCAA meet with performances at the Mike Lints Laker Challenge. Candice Wheat won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.22 seconds, and Kathie Posa and Emily Fox both qualified in field events, although they had already done so in a previous meet. Grand Valley’s next meet is Friday, Jan. 25 in Allendale, Mich. at the GVSU Bob Eubanks Open.Wheat won in both the 55-meter hurdles and the 55-meter dash, crossing the line first in the dash with a time of 7.35 seconds in the final. Ashley Jager took the 400-meter dash for the Lakers with a time of 1:00.56. Kayla Vallar and Adrienne Chandler were both less than a second behind her. In the 600-meter event, Katherine McCarthy took first with a time of 1:38.14. Kelly Gibbons finished first in the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:26.23. Maegan Doyen earned a first-place honor in the high jump by clearing 1.65 meters. Heather VanderSlik also cleared the same heighth, but the judge’s ruling went to Doyen. Fox and Posa won the shot put and weight throw events, respectively. Fox threw a distance of 13.91 meters, while Posa’s weight throw totalled 18.04 meters.

With an NCAA Provisional Qualifying performance and several other near-misses, the Hillsdale College Women’s Track & Field team continued their early season surge at the Notre Dame Indoor Opener on Friday night.Leading the way for the Chargers was freshman phenom Marta Scheiwe. Scheiwe, a prized recruit from Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis, finished the 400m Dash in a time of 57.33 seconds to claim 3rd place. Scheiwe’s peformance currently ranks her 5th nationally. Scheiwe also placed 5th in the 200m Dash. And, while Scheiwe was the only Charger to provisionally qualify for NCAA’s, several others almost turned in NCAA Provisional Qualifying performances, including Chelsea Wackernagel and Anna Leutheuser. Wackernagel cleared 11’ 1 ¾” in the Pole Vault to claim 2nd place. Her effort was just 10cm shy of the NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark. Leutheuser threw the 20# Weight 51’ 9 ¾”, which left her 6 cm short of the NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark. Other Top-8 finishers for the Chargers included Kelsey Schuler (3rd, Triple Jump), Jazmin Williams (5th, 400m Dash...7th, 200m Dash), Kathryn Hunt (6th, Long Jump), Erin Brunko (7th, Mile), Kristin Donovan (7th, Weight Throw...8th, Shot Put), Circe Cansino (8th, Long Jump) and Jen Gunderson (8th, 800m Run). The Chargers travel to conference foe Findlay next Friday and Saturday for the Findlay Classic.

Timberwolves
The Northwood University track and field teams took part in the SVSU Indoor Open Friday night (January 18).No team scoring was taken at the event, which was held at the Ryder Center. Christy Kulp (Grand Ledge, Mich.) placed third in the shot put (38-5) for the Timberwolves top individual performance. Hannah Stone (Lapeer, Mich./East) and Kylen Cieslak (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) placed fourth and fifth in the mile, clocking 5:23.11 and 5:26.54, respectively. Charonne Thomasos (Toronto, Ont./Franis Libermann) placed seventh in the triple jump (30-11.75) and eighth in the long jump (16-4.25).
Northwood will have next week off. They return to action February 1-2 at the DII Challenge, which will also be hosted by Saginaw Valley.

Cardinals
The SVSU women’s track and field team returned to the track Friday for the 20th Indoor Collegiate Open held at the Ryder Center.The Cardinals had eight finishes on the women’s side of third place or better, including Leighann Dowell (Millington, Mich.), who won the 60 Meter Hurdles with a time of 8.98 seconds. Dowell also finished fourth in the Triple Jump and fifth in the Shot Put competitions. Sjonne Mitchell (Clarkston, Mich.) also placed well in multiple events for the Cardinal women, finishing in second place in the 60 Meter Dash and fourth place in the 200 Meter Dash.The Cardinal women fared very well in the distance races, with Becca Rudey (Wixon, Mich.) finishing third in the Mile, while Maggie Stalker (Oscoda, Mich.), Elayna Dush (Sanford, Mich.) and Carly Burger (Linden, Mich.) finished third, fourth and fifth respectively in the 3000 Meter Run. In the field events, Heather Schmitz (Brighton, Mich.) took third place in the Pole Vault, while Danielle Blanton (Cardington, Ohio) also took a third place finish in the Weight Throw. The Cardinals’ next track meet is the University of Findlay Open, which will be held on next weekend (Jan. 25-26) in Findlay, Ohio.
