Eagles
The Ashland University women’s golf team finished in third place at the GLIAC Championships, held at the University of Findlay from Saturday through Monday (April 19-21).Ashland scored 957 in the two rounds, with scores of 315, 320, and 322. The Eagles finished behind league champion Grand Valley State (907) and Ferris State (927).AU’s top finisher was Stephanie Schwertner, who shot 83-79-77 for a 239. That was good for 12th place in the tournament. Bridget Slonkosky tied for 13th with a score of 240. Christine Suchy was 15th with a 242, while Annie Miles (16th, 243) and Janice Greenblatt (18th, 247) also finished in the top 20. The top score belonged to Ferris State’s Becky Hoffman with a 226. Grand Valley State managed four of the five next best scores and had six players in the top 20, as did Ferris State. AU tallied five players in the 20 top finishers.Four schools finished behind Ashland. Findlay (981), Northwood (1019), Gannon (1035), and Mercyhurst (1074) rounded out the scoring.

Bulldogs
The nationally-ranked Ferris State women’s golf team posted a three-round 927-stroke total to finish in second place at the 2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women’s Golf Championships, which were held April 20-21 in Arlington, Ohio. The Bulldogs carded rounds of 307, 313, and 307 on the par 72, 5,851-yard Sycamore Springs Golf Course to finish 20 strokes behind champion Grand Valley State (907, +43) in the seven-team tourney field. Ashland garnered third place with a 957 (+93) while host Findlay wrapped up fourth place as a result of shooting a 981 (+117). Senior Becky Hoffman (Gaines/Swartz Creek) was the tournament’s top individual medalist as she bested Grand Valley State’s Ashley Smith by carding a birdie in the first playoff hole. Hoffman carded a 226 (74-75-77=226, +10) as did Smith (73-78-75=226, +10) after three rounds.Junior Meghan Hunter (Dexter) fired a 230 score (76-79-75=230,+14) to capture fifth place while junior Alison Meyer (Duluth, Minn./Central) was five strokes back with a 235-stroke total (77-80-78=235,+19). Tying for 10th place was junior Raquel Hansen (West Olive/Grand Haven), who registered a 238 score (80-81-77=238, +22). Senior Missy Ward (Fenton/Linden) turned in a 17th-place 244 score (81-79-84=244, +28) while freshman Jacqueline Benscoter (Metamorra/Lapeer West) placed in a three-way tie for 20th place after generating a 250 total ( 83-82-85=250, +34).

Oilers
The University of Findlay women’s golf team placed fourth at the 2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship which concluded on Monday, April 21 at the Sycamore Spring Golf Course in Arlington, Ohio. The Oilers finished with a three round score of 981 (331, 326, 324) during the tournament as Grand Valley State University took home the team title with a 907 (297, 307, 303). Ferris State’s Becky Hoffman and Grand Valley State’s Ashley Smith tied for the lead after three rounds with identical scores of 226 but Hoffman captured the individual title by carding a birdie in the first playoff hole. Stephanie Gillette finished seventh to lead the Oilers. Gillette carded a three round score of 234 (81, 78, 75) and was followed by Alyssa Nigro who tied for 13th with a 240 (80, 83, 77). Andrea Vogt came in 20th with a 250 (85, 82, 83) while Megan Hall (87, 83, 92 – 262), Kristy Homan (85, 90, 90 – 265) and Erin Craig (88, 90, 89 – 267) also competed for Findlay at the event.

Gannon University
Golden Knights
The Gannon women’s golf team finished sixth out of seven teams at the 2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships hosted by the University of Findlay at the Sycamore Springs Golf Course. Individually, Jess Slonaker (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) completed a stellar 2007-08 campaign with a fine showing at the GLIAC Championships. Slonaker recorded a hole-in-one on the par-three, 143-yard eighth hole during Monday’s final round. The junior was later named to the All-GLIAC honorable-mention squad. She averaged 79.6 strokes during 14 rounds in 2007-08, recording three top-10 finishes in seven events. Gannon finished sixth with a three-round total of 1,035. The Lady Knights opened the championships with rounds of 348 and 353, before firing a weekend-best 334 on Monday. Slonaker was Gannon’s top golfer, tying for 10th with a three-round score of 238. She recorded rounds of 78, 80, and 80. Amanda Eckhart (T25th, 91-81-84-256), Allyssa Ferriell (35th, 91-94-87-272), and Emily Quinn (T40th, 88-98-98-284) completed Gannon’s four-member team. Whitney Burkett had a two-round total of 177 (94-83), but didn’t post a final score because she withdrew from the second round. Gannon’s 2007-08 women’s golf season is now complete.

Grand Valley State University
Lakers
Grand Valley State shot a final round 303 and finished with a 54-hole total of 907 to claim the 2008 GLIAC Women’s Golf Championship at Sycamore Creek Golf Club in Findlay, Ohio. The title was the Lakers’ fifth since 2001 (2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008). The Lakers were 20 shots ahead of second place Ferris State (927) and 50 shots in front of Ashland (957). Grand Valley State will now prepare for the NCAA East Regional to be held at the Meadow’s Golf Course on the campus of Grand Valley State May 5-7. The top two teams from the East Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships.Ashley Smith moved into contention for the GLIAC individual title with a final round 75 for a 54-hole total of 226. Smith tied Ferris State’s Becky Hoffman for top honors, but Hoffman was crowned champion with a birdie on the first playoff hole. Tracey Puckering shot a final round 75 and finished third with a two-day total of 227, while Caitlin Benett shot a 228 and finished fourth. Kristina Langston carded a final 18 75 and finished 6th with a final 54-hole total of 233. Allie Tyler was 9th (236) and Caitlin Duval was 19th (249).

Mercyhurst College
Lakers
After the third round of the GLIAC Championships, the Mercyhurst Lakers women’s golf team finished in 7th place overall. Caitlin Cummings came from behind in the third round to finish the highest individually for the Lakers with scores of 89 in the third round and a 85 and 95 on day one. Mercyhurst will now prepare for their 2008 fall campaign. For the Lakers, Cummings finished in 32nd place individually and was followed by teammates Kaitlin Brody (33rd), Arielle Chong (36), Alanna Kirwan (37), Mattye Laurer (38), and Lauren Montebell (40). Ferris State’s Becky Hoffman held onto the No.1 spot in the individual competition with scores of 74, 75 and 77. Grand Valley State dominated the team competition with a total score of 907(after three rounds) and won out by twenty strokes over Ferris State. Ashland University finished in third with a team score of 957. The Mercyhurst Lakers will now look forward to their 2008 fall campaign.

Timberwolves
The Northwood University women’s golf team placed fifth at the GLIAC Championships Monday afternoon (April 21).Northwood shot team scores of 332-337-350 to finish at 1019. Grand Valley State was the overall winner at 907, followed by Ferris State at 927.Findlay served as the host for this year’s event. The Championship was held at the Sycamore Spring Golf Course in Arlington, Ohio. The course played as a 5,851 yard, par 72.Anna Trim (Clarkston, Mich.) led the way for the Timberwolves. She carded rounds of 79-82-91 to finish 23rd at 252. Lotte Voermans (Tilburg, Netherlands) was one stroke behind Trim to place 24th (83-84-86=253).
