AU split a pair of games, including an 81-66 loss to Hillsdale and a 79-65 victory at Tiffin. The Eagles were led by junior forward Betsy Morrison (Gahanna, OH/Lincoln), who averaged 15.5 ppg. and 8.5 rpg. Morrison tallied game-highs in points (16) and rebounds (10) in the road win at Tiffin. Junior guard Lisa Graue (Dayton, OH/Wayne) averaged 14.5 ppg. in the two games and added 6 steals, including 4 against the Dragons. Ashland’s five juniors combined for 60 of the team’s 79 points in the win over Tiffin, including four players in double digits. The Eagles recorded 19 offensive rebounds in the loss to Hillsdale, all coming from four of the five starters. AU was led against the Chargers by sophomore guard Lacy Romine (Kettering, OH/Fairmont), who scored a season-best 16 points. Ashland has alternated between wins and losses in its last six contests and has only lost consecutive games once, while owning one three-game win streak. The 79 points against Tiffin were the most for AU since a 91-88 victory over Shepherd on Nov. 25. Including the win at Tiffin, the Eagles play six consecutive games away from Kates Gymnasium – a stretch that covers 28 days. Ashland won’t be at home again until Jan. 31 against Ferris State.

Oilers
The Oilers split a pair of GLIAC games during the week at home, winning 93-83 against Wayne State and losing 88-74 to Hillsdale…The loss to the Chargers was Findlay’s first at home this season and also snapped their five game winning streak…In the win over Wayne State, sophomore guard Audra Mihalic set a new season-high with 18 points while senior center Katie Greisiger also set a new season-high with 17 points…Mihalic drained a career-high 12-of-14 free throws in the win over the Warriors…The Oilers also set a new season-high by going 34-of-39 from the charity stripe…In the loss to Hillsdale, the Oilers tied a school record with 12 three pointers…The only other time Findlay has drained 12 triples came last season against Ferris State on January 27…Freshman guard Cate Cianchetti led the Oilers in the loss with a career-high tying 15 points…She scored 13 against the Warriors…Freshman forward Kendra Robbins also broke out of a slump in the loss to Hillsdale with ten points and six rebounds…The Oilers averaged 15.5 assists in the two games…They also had a hot hand from the three point line, hitting 19-of-34 attempts.

The Lady Knights went 2-0 last week with a home victory against Slippery Rock (83-81 in ot) and road verdict at Mercyhurst (85-68) … This is Gannon’s eighth consecutive victory against Mercyhurst, including the last four played at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center … Gannon erased a seven-point deficit with 2:30 to play in regulation and five-point deficit with 26 seconds left to force overtime against Slippery Rock … Ashley Lowdermilk (Kensington, Ohio/Carrollton) hit three three-pointers in the final 1:25 of regulation, including one with three seconds left to tie the game … Kristina Freeman (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) averaged 21.5 points and seven rebounds last week … Freeman scored 23 points against Mercyhurst, one shy of her career-high … Brittany Tabron (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) recorded her fourth double-double with a career-high 22 points and 13 rebounds at Mercyhurst … Kim Vargas (Sterling, Va./Broad Run) posted her second double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds against Slippery Rock … Gannon has won 27 consecutive games dating back to 2005-06 when leading at halftime.

GVSU dropped its first GLIAC contest of the year, falling to 4-1 in conference play…The Lakers started GLIAC play 4-0 for the third consecutive season…Senior guard Erin Cyplik (St. Clair, Mich.) led Grand Valley in scoring over the week, averaging 14 points per game and scoring 16 against Michigan Tech…Cyplik was also a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line on the week, including a perfect 8-8 performance against Michigan Tech…Sophomore Lauren Buresh (Stanwood, Mich.) averaged 5.5 rebounds per game to lead the team, including five offensive rebounds and six defensive rebounds…Senior Crystal Zick (Byron Center, Mich.) led Grand Valley with eight assists and four steals.

The Chargers women’s basketball team swept road games from rivals Ashland and Findlay last week…Hillsdale’s 11-2 record ranks among its best 13-game starts in school history…Hillsdale scored 169 points in the two wins last week, the most points it’s scored in any two-game span this season…In the two games, Hillsdale received some remarkable performances, highlighted by Katie Cezat’s 21 rebounds at Ashland…The 21 boards by Cezat tied a school record, set by Hillsdale College Athletic Hall of Famer Michele Smith, who equaled that number in a game in February 1984…Cezat then scored a career-high 33 points in the team’s victory at Ashland Saturday…Senior Julie Slot scored a career-high 32 points Thursday night vs. Ashland, and added 20 more in Saturday’s win at Findlay…Hillsdale’s .846 overall winning percentage is the best in the conference…Hillsdale also leads the GLIAC with a .368 opponents’ field goal percentage, and is number one in rebound differential…Individually, Cezat is second in the GLIAC with 20.5 points per game, and is the far-and-away rebounding leader, collecting 11.8 per contest…Claire Aubrey and Brooke Knight also hit career-highs in scoring this week, each scoring 14 points Thursday and Saturday, respectively… Hillsdale will host Lake Superior State University Thursday in its only home game during a 47-day stretch from Dec. 8 through Jan. 24.

LSSU closed the gap on Northwood, improving from an early-season 15-point road loss to a three-point home loss Saturday. Laker freshman guard Emily Joseph (Sterling Heights, Mich.) made 10-of-10 free throws and scored a season-high 21 points, and junior center Alyssa VanderWal (Allendale, Mich.) totaled what is believed to be a school-record eight blocked shots against the Timberwolves in the second meeting between the two teams…VanderWal also led the Lakers to a 61-56 victory over SVSU with 13 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots…Just shy of the 3.0 field goals per game minimum to receive recognition in the GLIAC statistics, VanderWal is shooting an impressive 69.8 percent from the field overall. She is ranked third in the league against conference opponents with a percentage of .724 and first in blocked shots, averaging 2.29 per game (2.13 overall)…Senior guard Shalyn Beauchamp (Rock, Mich.) is ranked sixth in the GLIAC in average assists per game at 4.93.

Amy Achesinski scored 25 points to lead all scorers against cross-town rival Gannon, but Mercyhurst could not pull out a win in a 85-68 loss…Accompanying Achesinski’s 25 points offensively for the Lakers was Samantha Loadman with 13 points and Paris Pugliese with 10…The difference in the game came on points off turnovers where the Knights capitalized on the Lakers 17 turnovers for 28 points…The Lakers (5-9.0-4) will look for their first conference win against GLIAC opponent Ashland at home on Thursday.

Michigan Tech won twice last week to extend its winning streak to five. Danae Danen (Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) averaged 19.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocks in two wins last week. The 6-0 sophomore went 8-of-11 and scored a game-high 18 points in 23 minutes of a 84-29 win over Northland. She then tallied 21 points, eight rebounds and five blocks in a 72-48 win over Grand Valley State. Danen is averaging 10.4 points on the season . Senior Catherine Rottier (Seymour, Wis.) came within two assists of tying a school record when she dished out 12 vs. Grand Valley State last Saturday (Jan. 5). The 5-8 point guard ranks third in the GLIAC in assists and, with 77 on the season, is on pace to break the school record of 130. Sophomore Tara Ferris (Hartland, Wis./Waukesha Catholic) has started each of the last three games and averaged 10.3 points per game over that span.

NMU will host Northland College in a non-conference game to begin the week…The ‘Cats then host GLIAC foes Ferris St., and Grand Valley St., for the second time in a week, …Three ‘Cats scored in double-figures in the scoring column against LSSU as Kelsey Deacon led the way with 16 points…Angie Leckson off the bench was the lone ’Cat in double-figures against GVSU with a career-high 14 points… Against GVSU, NMU had season-lows in points (45) and field goals made (12)…Two ‘Cats are averaging over 10 ppg, Allison Carroll leads the way (172) with 12.3 ppg as Deacon is next (142) 10.1 ppg…Deacon leads the ‘cats with 40 assists… LaShawn Lambert had a game-high 10 rebounds against GVSU…Cassie Hegbloom leads the team on the glass with 88 rebounds (6.3 rpg) and six blocks...Maria Kasza has a team-leading 28 three-pointers as Deacon is next on the list with 21.

Timberwolves
The Northwood University women’s basketball team improved to 8-4 overall, 4-1 in the GLIAC with a 68-65 win at Lake Superior Saturday afternoon … it is the first time the Timberwolves have started conference play with a 4-1 record...NU’s win over LSSU gave them a sweep of the season series against the Lakers for the first time in program history … the 8-4 overall start is the second-best in school history – the Timberwolves were 8-3 to open the 2000-01 season … junior Megan Starnes (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) has been a force for the Timberwolves of late … she matched her career-high with 24 points while grabbing 12 rebounds and finishing with three steals against Lake Superio …she went 8-15 from the floor and 7-8 from the foul line in the contest … Starnes is leading NU in scoring (15.3) and rebounding (7.2), ranking in the top-10 in the GLIAC in both … over her last five games, Starnes is averaging 19.0 points and 7.6 rebounds per game … Northwood has three conference game over a five day stretch this upcoming week – NU hosts Michigan Tech Thursday and Northern Michigan Saturday before traveling to Ferris State Monday night.

The Cardinals lost their only game last week at Lake Superior State by a score of 61-56…with the loss the Cardinals dropped to 6-6 overall and 1-4 in GLIAC conference play…the Cardinals had four players in double figures at LSSU, led by seniors Brittany Burns (Saginaw, Mich./Alabama St.) and Kara Kinzer (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica Eisenhower) with 14 points each…junior Tricia Everett (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) had six assists against LSSU and now ranks second in the GLIAC in assists per game with 6.33…LaTille Ross (Opelika, Ala./Alabama St.) currently ranks fifth in the conference in scoring average at 15.8, while Burns and Kinzer rank 11th and 12th with 13.7 and 13.6 points per game respectively…Ross (6.9) and Burns (6.7) rank ninth and tenth respectively in rebounds per game, while Brittany Burkhardt (West Bloomfield, Mich./Walled Lake Central) is 11th with an average of 6.6 rebounds per game…Everett, Burkhardt and Burns also rank in the top ten in steals per game…Kinzer leads the GLIAC in three-pointers made with 34 so far this season…the Cardinals return home this week to host Northern Michigan (Thurs.) and Michigan Tech (Sat.).

WSU lost for the fourth time in five games this season last Thursday at Findlay … the 93 points allowed to the Oilers were the most since Northern Kentucky tallied 97 on Nov. 25, 2006 … it was also WSU’s third game this season with at least 80 points as the Warriors recorded 83 at UF … WSU was led by junior guard Jasmine McCall (Detroit, Mich./CMA), who had game-high totals in points (22) and assists (6) and tied for game-best honors with three steals … she made a career-high four three-pointers shooting 66.7 percent from beyond the arc … it was also McCall’s second consecutive game with at least 20 points… junior Monique George (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech) tallied a season-high 13 points, one shy of her career-high set 54 weeks ago at Saginaw Valley … this was her third time in double figures this year … sophomore Lindsey West (Royal Oak, Mich./Kimball) scored a career-high 12 points, her second consecutive game in double figures … junior Chastidy Miller (White Lake, Mich./Waterford Kettering) moved into eighth place in WSU’s all-time list for free throws attempted with 331 surpassing Debbie Spranger’s (1986-90) mark of 330 … WSU will play at Ferris State on Wednesday, the only non-Thursday or Saturday GLIAC game for the Warriors this year … Wayne State will have played on a game on every day of the week but Sunday after the Bulldog encounter.
