Eagles
The Eagles tallied a come from behind win by outscoring Northern Michigan, 33-23, in the second half of Saturday’s contest. AU held on for a 56-53 victory in its only game of the week. Ashland had three players score in double figures, led by Elizabeth O’Brien (Mansfield, OH/Madison), who notched 14 points and 5 rebounds. Junior Betsy Morrison (Gahanna, OH/Lincoln) added 11 points and 6 rebounds, while junior Jessica Minch (Centerville, OH) tossed in 11 points on 5-for-5 shooting. AU trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half, but continued to chip away and took the lead for good with 27 seconds left on a layup by Minch. Two free throws by junior point guard Alethea Lamberson (London, OH) with eight seconds left provided the final margin. The Eagles evened their GLIAC mark at 2-2 and travel to Lakeland, FL for the Florida Southern Classic this week. Ashland takes on Saint Leo on Wednesday (Dec. 19) at 5:30 p.m. and Florida Southern at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday (Dec. 20). AU doesn’t play again after that until 2008 when it takes on Hillsdale at home on Jan. 3.

Bulldogs
The Ferris State University women’s basketball squad used a strong second half performance to register its sixth-straight win of the season with a 85-76 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) triumph over Lake Superior State Saturday (Dec. 15) afternoon in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The Bulldogs trailed slightly 38-36 at halftime, but outscored the host Lakers 49-38 in the final period to notch the victory. Senior forward/center Rachel Folcik (Powers/Carney-Nadeau) led the Bulldogs in the win over LSSU. Folcik posted a game-high 26 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, two steals and a blocked shot in the victory. She made eight-of-13 (.615) field goal attempts and hit 10-of-11 (.909) free throws in recording her fifth double-double effort of the campaign. Folcik was joined in double-digits by junior forward Caitlin Hutchison (Riverview), who had a career afternoon with 25 points and six rebounds for FSU. Junior guard Teghan Thelen (Pewamo/Westphalia) chipped in 12 points as well.

Oilers
The Oilers won their only game of the week, 92-77 at home against Michigan Tech…The victory was Findlay’s first in the GLIAC this season as they improved to 2-0 on the season at home…As a team, Findlay connected on season-high 32-of-36 from the line and were led by junior guard Brittany Wells who set a new school record by going 14-of-14 from the line…Her 14 makes with no misses eclipsed the 12-of-12 showing that former Oilers guard Michelle Vorst had against Wayne State University on February 2, 2006…Wells ended the game with 22 points…Findlay also had a season-high 16 steals in the win and were led by Wells and sophomore guard Audra Mihalic who each contributed five apiece…The game also marked the first time Findlay has had five players score in double figures on the season as Wells (22), Mihalic (14), sophomore guard Michele Derr (12), sophomore forward Megan Sellers (12) and sophomore guard Maggie Gompers (11) all went over ten points…The Oilers also made a season-high ten three pointers and were led by Gompers who drained three triples.

GVSU lost at home for the first time this season, dropping its overall record to 6-3 (3-0)…The Lakers had won six in a row before Saturday, including five straight at home…GVSU has started off the conference season 3-0 for the third season in a row…Senior guard Erin Cyplik (St. Clair, Mich.) tied a season-high with 11 rebounds against the Tritons…Freshman Elizabeth Van Tiflin (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) grabbed a career-high six rebounds on Saturday…Sophomore Jocelyn Ingram (Lansing, Mich./Waverly) scored a career-high nine points.

Chargers
The Chargers were handed their first loss of the season, 65-53 Saturday night in Midland…The Timberwolves attempted 33 more free throws in the game than the Chargers, a difference that was significant in the game…Hillsdale still possesses the GLIAC’s best scoring defense, allowing 53.7 points per game…Junior Katie Cezat is off to a terrific start to the season, scoring at least 15 points and grabbing at least eight rebounds in all nine of the Chargers’ games this season…Cezat is second in the GLIAC in scoring, at 20.4 points per game…She is number one in the conference in rebounding (10.8 per game) and ranks fifth in field goal percentage (.574)…Sophomore Brooke Knight is fourth in the GLIAC in minutes played, averaging 36 minutes per game…The team will take a trip to San Antonio this week, to play in a two-day holiday tournament…Hillsdale faces St. Mary’s (Texas) Wednesday and Texas A&M International Thursday…Wednesday’s game is the second all-time meeting between the Chargers and Rattlers, with St. Mary’s winning the first meeting during the 2001-02 season.

Junior forward/center Jaclyn Armstrong (Haslett, Mich.) scored a season-high 24 points to lead Lake Superior State, which lost 85-76 to Ferris State on Saturday. Armstrong has hit season highs in two of her last three games, averaging 16 points per game in those contests…Freshman guard Emily Joseph (Sterling Heights, Mich.) scored 15 points against FSU to tie her season high. She has averaged 14.3 ppg in her last three contests…LSSU finished 1-3 during its recent four-game December homestand. The Lakers play their next four games on the road, including non-conference games at Minnesota-Duluth and St. Cloud State. LSSU has an all-time record of 2-2 against UMD and is playing St. Cloud State for the first time in school history…The Lakers are playing UMD for the first time since Dec. 20, 1991. Current LSSU director of athletics Kris (Bullock) Dunbar was a senior captain on that Laker team…LSSU senior guard Shalyn Beauchamp (Rock, Mich.) was held to five points by Ferris State, but is still leading the Lakers in ppg (12.2) and assists per game (5.0), and is second in rpg (5.6). She is tied for fifth in the GLIAC in assists per game…Junior center Alyssa VanderWal (Allendale, Mich.) is second in the GLIAC in blocked shots with 15.

The Mercyhurst Lakers women’s basketball team lost for the second time this season to Tiffin 75-49 on Saturday …Amy Achesinski led the Lakers with 11 points and four rebounds…Lindsay Whipkey earned her first start of the season and contributed with eight points and seven defensive rebounds…The Lakers were out rebounded 48-33 by the Dragons and shot a dismal 24 percent in the first half...Mercyhurst will play host to West Virginia Wesleyan on Monday at 7 p.m.

MTU had its six-game winning streak snapped last Saturday (Dec. 15) at Findlay by a 92-77 score. Findlay was the first team to score 90 or more points in a game against a John Barnes-led Michigan Tech squad. In fact, only two times in the previous five seasons had the Huskies surrendered 80 points in a game . Sophomore Katie Wysocky (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) registered her fifth double-double of the season with 22 points and 10 rebounds at Findlay. The 6-0 forward is averaging 16.4 points and 10.4 rebounds per game and is looking to become the first Huskies player to average 10 rebounds per game since 1983-84 . Catherine Rottier (Seymour, Wis.) recorded 10 points and six assists at Findlay. The senior has now registered 50 assists on theseason and an even 300 for her career. Only six other players have tallied 300 assists in Michigan Tech history. Dawn Zarling is the school’s all-time leader in assists with 439 .Michigan Tech plays its next five games and 13 of its final 18 regular season games at home.

The Lady Wildcats basketball team will enter the Christmas break with a two-game losing skid, the Wildcats are 2-2 in the past four games…NMU dropped its only action last week at Ashland (53-56)…Allison Carroll and Angie Leckson were the only two ‘Cats in double-figures in the scoring column against the Eagles with 14 and 12 points respectively…Carroll leads the team in points (15.1 ppg), rebounds (5.7 rpg) and blocks (8)…Kelsey Deacon had three of the five three-pointers on Saturday at Ashland and leads the team with 20, she is second on the team in scoring with 11.3 ppg…Deacon leads the ‘Cats with 29 assists…Steffani Stoeger has a team-high 20 steals…The ‘Cats will not be back in action until the MTU Tournament on Dec. 29-30 where they will face Finlandia and Marygrove.

Timberwolves
Northwood improved to 6-2 on the season with a 65-53 victory over Hillsdale Saturday night … it was the Chargers first loss of the season after opening with eight victories … the Timberwolves won the game thanks to strong free throw shooting, as the Timberwolves finished 28-33 from the line (84.8 percent) … Hillsdale went just 6-10 from the stripe for the contest … Northwood was led by junior Megan Starnes (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.), who finished with team-highs in both points (19) and rebounds (eight) while going 11-11 from the foul line… Karlie LeRoy (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel) played a key role for the Timberwolves off the bench, scoring 13 points while grabbing four rebounds … Katie Gonta (Brighton, Mich.) went 5-5 from the floor while finishing with 12 points … she currently leads the GLIAC in field goal percentage, connecting on 64.8 percent of her attempts (35-54) … the Timberwolves two losses on the season have come to teams that are currently a combined 17-1 (No. 25 Minnesota State – 10-0, Ferris State – 7-1) … NU is the lone team in the GLIAC with five players averaging 10 or more points per game.

The Cardinals improved their record to 4-4 overall, and 1-3 in the GLIAC, with a win Saturday night over Wayne State by a score of 59-41…SVSU forced 22 turnovers and held the Warriors to just 29 percent shooting on the night…Brittany Burkhardt (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and LaTille Ross (Opelika, Ala./Alabama St.) both recorded double-doubles on the night…Burkhardt recorded game highs in points (19) and rebounds (14) against the Warriors, while Ross grabbed seven offensive rebounds on her way to 17 points and 12 rebounds…for the season, Ross ranks fifth inthe GLIAC in scoring (16.4) and rebounding (8.0)…junior Tricia Everett (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) recorded a game high six assists against Wayne St. and currently leads the GLIAC in assists per game (7.5)…senior Brittany Burns (Saginaw, Mich./Alabama St.) currently ranks tenth in the conference in scoring (14.4)…the Cardinals return to action Tuesday when they travel to play Drury for a 7 pm tip.

Warriors
Wayne State lost both of its contests last week (79-60 at home to Tiffin, and 59-41 at Saginaw Valley). Junior guard Chastidy Miller (White Lake, Mich./Waterford Kettering) had 20 points vs. TU for her second 20-point game of the campaign, and seventh of her career … she made seven-of-12 from the floor and four-of-four from the foul line … the Dragons shot 46.2 percent (30-65) for the game, the highest percentage allowed by WSU this year … TU also had the best three-point shooting against Wayne State this year at 42.3 percent (11-26), while the 79 points are the most surrendered by the Warriors this season … WSU scored a season-low 41 points at Saginaw Valley making a season-low 16 field goals … the Warriors made a season-low 29.1 percent (16-55) of their shots from the floor and also had a season-high 22 turnovers… senior Nicole Rogers (Lansing, Mich./Everett) moved into a tie for 10th in career rebounds at 540 with Monique Johnson (1988-93) … junior Kim Gear (Watervliet, Mich.) had career-highs in points (11) and rebounds (8) in the loss at SVSU.
