Eagles
The Eagles split a pair of games last week, losing to West Liberty State (86-76) on Thursday and defeating intrastate rival Findlay (71-58) on Saturday afternoon. Junior forward Jessica Minch (Centerville, OH) led the way for Ashland, averaging 16.0 ppg. and 7.0 rpg. and swatting five more shots. Minch has 20 rejections this season. She poured in a career-high 23 points against Findlay. Junior forward Betsy Morrison (Gahanna, OH/Lincoln) neared a triple-double in the win over Findlay, tallying 11 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 assists. Junior point guard Alethea Lamberson (London, OH) averaged 13.0 ppg. and turned the ball over just twice in 76 minutes of play. Lamberson has recorded 31 assists this season to just 11 turnovers. She is also shooting .556 (10-for-18) from three-point range, which is a vast improvement from last year. In 2006-07, Lamberson didn’t record her 10th triple until February 15th. Ashland out rebounded its opponents last week, 79-58, and average nearly 8 more rebounds per game than its opponents.

The Ferris State University women’s basketball squad continued its impressive streak against Northwood, but it didn’t come easy as the Bulldogs fought their way to a 68-63 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) win Saturday (Dec. 1). The Bulldogs trailed by as many as 10 points in the opening half before rebounding for the victory. FSU was down 36-30 at halftime, but outscored NU 38-27 in the final period. The win was FSU’s 24th consecutive series’ victory over Northwood and gave Ferris head coach Tracey Dorow her 19th win over the Timberwolves in as many tries. Ferris has currently won four-straight outings to date this season. Senior forward/center Rachel Folcik (Powers/Carney-Nadeau) led the Bulldogs to two wins in their first two league games of the season. The 6-1 Folcik compiled a double-double effort with 20 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and two steals in FSU’s 79-68 conference-opening home win over Saginaw Valley State Thursday (Nov. 29) evening at Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. She then posted a team-high 19 points and nine rebounds while adding three assists and two steals in the Bulldogs’ road victory over Northwood. Folcik totaled 39 points, 22 rebounds, eight assists and four steals in the two-game stretch while converting 13-of-25 (.520) field goal attempts and 13-of-14 (.929) free throws. Ferris has currently won 13 of its last 16 games dating back to last season.

Oilers
The Oilers split a pair of games last week, winning 78-64 at home against Clarion University and losing on the road to Ashland University 71-58…In the win over Clarion, junior forward Ashley Westenbarger led the team with a career-high 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the floor…She drained all four of her three pointers and also added five rebounds, three assists and a steal…Sophomore guard Audra Mihalic, junior guard Brittany Wells and freshman guard Cate Cianchetti also reached double figures in the victory, each scoring 12 points apiece…Wells added a team-high six rebounds and four steals while Cianchetti dished out a career-high six assists…In the loss to Ashland, Wells went for a season-high 25 points to go along with a season-high five steals…Mihalic also reached double figures with 11 and a season-high six rebounds.

GU opened its GLIAC schedule with a 1-1 week, defeating Northern Michigan (80-79) and falling to Michigan Tech (76-65) … the Lady Knights were among others receiving votes in the November 27th USA Today ESPN Top 25 poll … Saturday’s loss to Michigan Tech snapped a three-game winning streak … Brittany Tabron (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) averaged a double-double off the bench last week, posting 16.5 points and 11 rebounds per game … Tabron recorded her second double-double of the season with 17 points and a career-high 15 rebounds against Northern Michigan … Kristina Freeman’s (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) steal and lay-up with 59 seconds remaining provided Gannon with its winning basket against NMU … Gannon shot only 33.3 percent from the field and 28.9 percent from three-point range during its loss to Michigan Tech … the loss snapped an eight-game home winning streak … Gannon has won 23 consecutive games dating back to 2005-06 when leading at halftime.

The Lakers have won four straight games after dropping their first two…GVSU ranks second in the GLIAC in scoring defense (55.0 ppg)…The Lakers also rank fourth in the GLIAC in scoring margin, outscoring opponents by 13.8 points…Senior guard Crystal Zick (Byron Center, Mich.) ranks fourth in the GLIAC in scoring, averaging 18.5 points per game…Zick also ranks second in steals at 3.67 spg.

HC’s women’s basketball team are 6-0 to start their 2007-08 basketball campaign…The Chargers are 19-1 in the month of November since the start of the 2004-05 season…This is the third time in four years the team has gotten off to at least a 5-0 start…The Chargers, who lost seven of their top nine letterwinners from last season, have won all six games by at least 11 points…The team hasn’t scored fewer than 64 points in any game, while holding its opponents to an average of 53.3 points per game…Junior Katie Cezat has done an exceptional job in her first six starts of her collegiate career, averaging 20.3 points and 10.5 rebounds per game…She has scored at least 15 points and had at least eight rebounds in all six games for the team this season…Freshman Kara McCormick already has four double-digit scoring games in the first six games of her collegiate career…Hillsdale opens GLIAC play this week with its first home games of the season, taking on Ashland Thursday night and Saginaw Valley Saturday afternoon…Last year, the Chargers swept Ashland, breaking a six-game losing streak to the Eagles.

LSSU is 0-2 in the GLIAC for the first time since the 1997-98 season when the Lakers lost to Ashland and Wayne State during their opening week…Scoring was fairly balanced last week as freshman Emily Joseph (Sterling Heights, Mich.) averaged 11.5 points per game, senior Shalyn Beauchamp (Rock, Mich.) contributed 11.0 ppg and rookie Katherine LaPrairie (Rockford, Mich.) chipped in 10.0 ppg to lead the Lakers…Junior Jackie Armstrong (Haslett, Mich.) scored a season-high 16 points, and Joseph scored a season-high 15 points during the Lakers’ 81-66 loss to Northwood…Beauchamp is currently ranked fourth in the GLIAC in free-throw percentage (14-16, .875)…LaPrairie is ranked fifth in the league in three-point field-goal percentage (13-25, .520) and is tied for third in average three-point field goals per game (2.17)…Junior Alyssa VanderWal (Allendale, Mich.) is ranked second (2.17), Armstrong is fourth (1.17) and senior Danielle Makin (Grosse Ile,Mich.) is tied for 11th (0.67) in average blocked shots per game. As a team, LSSU is second in the league in average blocked shots per game (4.33)…The Lakers are also ranked second in three-point field-goal percentage (.398).

Michigan Tech is on a four-game winning streak after claiming a pair of double-digit wins on the road last week in Erie, Pa. Sophomore Katie Wysocky is averaging a double double with 16.7 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. She tied a career high with 24 points last Saturday (Dec. 1) at Gannon. The 6-0 forward notched 23 points two days earlier in a win at Mercyhurst . Catherine Rottier turned in a career-high 10 assists in an 11-point win at Gannon last Saturday. For the week, the 5-8 senior point guard registered 29 points, 10 rebounds, 16 assists and just five turnovers . Michigan Tech made 28-of-32 free throws in two games last week - good for 87.5 percent . With last Thursday’s (Nov. 29) win at Mercyhurst, Michigan Tech moved to 15-0 all-time against the Lakers.

MTU evened its 2007-08 record with two wins at Minnesota Duluth’s Thanksgiving Classic. The Huskies defeated the host Bulldogs on their floor for the first time since 1998 with a 79-69 victory last Friday (Nov. 23). Senior Catherine Rottier and sophomore Katie Wysocky were both named to the all-classic team. Rottier totaled a career-high 27 points in Friday’s win over UMD, breaking her previous career high of 25 set in the 2006 NCAA Regional Quarterfinal game vs. Northern Kentucky . Katie Wysocky notched a double-double in each of Michigan Tech’s two wins last weekend. The sophomore forward scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds on Friday (Nov. 23). She followed that up with an 11-point, 13-rebound effort against St. Cloud State last per game this season.

The NMU women’s basketball team split in its first GLIAC road trip of the season losing to Gannon and defeated Mercyhurst…This week the ‘Cats play its first home games of the season against UM-Duluth, for the second time in about 10 days, on Tuesday and Michigan Tech on Saturday…NMU defeated the Bulldogs of UM-Duluth (70-53)…Allison Carroll led the ‘Cats against the Golden Knights with 25 points, she leads the team by averaging 17.7 ppg…Kelsey Deacon led the team against the Lakers with 16 points, she is the only other ‘Cat averaging 10 or more points a game (10.8 ppg)…The ‘Cats got 31 points off the bench against Mercyhurst, Kellie Rietveld had 10 off the pine…Carroll and Angie Leckson lead the ‘Cats off the glass with 6.2 rpg and 4.2 rpg respectively…Deacon has 21 assists to lead the ‘Cats…Against Mercyhurst the ‘Cats shot 60 percent from the floor in the first half (15-25) and 53.4 percent for the game (31-58).

The NU women posted a 2-1 record last week, improving their overall record to 4-2 on the season … the Timberwolves defeated Tiffin in a non-conference contest before beating Lake Superior and falling to Ferris State … NU was led by Megan Starnes (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) who averaged 14.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per game … she registered her fourth career double-double, finishing with 24 points and 14 rebounds against Lake Superior … her 24 points were a career-high … Sarah Glowacki (Freeland, Mich.) had her first career double-double against the Lakers as well, tallying 13 points and 12 rebounds … she nearly had a triple double in the game, finishing with nine assists … through their first six games, all five members of the starting lineup are averaging at least 10 points per game … Northwood will travel to Wayne State for its lone action this week Thursday night at 5:30 p.m.

The Cardinals split their two games last week, losing to Ferris State on Thursday night and beating Tiffin on Saturday afternoon…in the win over Tiffin, junior Tricia Everett (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) set a school record with 15 assists…senior Brittany Burns (Saginaw, Mich./Alabama St.) scored a game high 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against Tiffin on her way to recording her first double-double of the season…senior LaTille Ross (Opelika, Ala./Alabama St.) and Burns both scored at least 20 points in both games for SVSU…Ross had a game high 21 points and added seven rebounds against Ferris State, then made 10 of her 14 attempts from the field against Tiffin on her way to 20 points…Everett leads the conference in assists per game with 7.6 and is tied for fifth in steals per game with 2.8…Burns currently ranks fifth in the GLIAC in scoring average at 18.0 per contest…Ross ranks eighth in the conference in scoring (16.4) and rebounding (7.6)…senior Kara Kinzer (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica Eisenhower) has made 14 three-point shots on the season, the most of any player in the GLIAC.

After an eight-day layoff since a 90-52 triumph over Madonna in its home opener, Wayne State will play three games in six days this week starting with a Monday evening contest at Central State … the Warriors then begin conference play with home contests versus Northwood (Thursday) and Ashland (Saturday) … newcomer Jasmine McCall (Detroit, Mich./CMA) has made an immediate impact by scoring 40 points and leading the squad in both assists (16) and steals (13) … sophomore Brooke Bowers (Delphos, Ohio/Jefferson) is tied with McCall for the team scoring lead at 13.3 points per game as she has played 25 minutes a contest off the bench … junior Chastidy Miller (White Lake, Mich./Waterford Kettering) has a team-high 22 rebounds and is also leading the team with 15 free throws made in only three games … newcomer Lindsey West (Royal Oak, Mich./Kimball) is second on the team with 15 rebounds and fourth in scoring.
