Bulldogs
The Ferris State University women’s basketball squad kept its season alive with a hard-fought 93-89 triumph on the road over Northwood Saturday (March 1) evening in a GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinal game played inside NU’s Bennett Sports Center at Midland, Mich. Northwood, which claimed a share of this year’s GLIAC North Division crown, was making its first-ever appearance in the postseason event following a school record-setting regular-season finish while FSU was midst its 10th conference tournament berth. With the win, Ferris will advance to the GLIAC Tournament Semifinals and take on Ashland Friday, March 7, in Houghton, Mich. Game time is set for 8 p.m. (EST) at the Michigan Tech Student Development Complex Gymnasium. Senior All-America forward/center Rachel Folcik (Powers/Carney-Nadeau) keyed the Bulldog victory by scoring a team-high 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds after missing the previous two games due to injury. Her inspired play fueled the Bulldogs’ offensive attack as Ferris shot 51.7% (31-60) from the floor. The Bulldogs trailed 43-39 with 2:13 to go in the initial half before closing the period on a 9-0 run to take a 48-43 halftime edge. FSU built its lead to as large as 12 points with 6:30 remaining in the contest. The Bulldogs sank 29-of-40 (72.5%) free throws and sealed the win down the stretch at the charity stripe. In addition to Folcik, the Bulldogs received 18 points from junior forward Caitlin Hutchison (Riverview) as well as 14 points apiece by both junior guard Teghan Thelen (Pewamo/Westphalia) and freshman guard Becci Houdek (Canton).
