The Eagles earned a split against the Erie schools, solidifying a fourth GLIAC tournament berth in the past five seasons…Ashland fell to Gannon for the second time this season by one point on a pair of free throws in the final 30 seconds. AU trails the Golden Knights by one game in the win column for third place in the South Division…with the win over Mercyhurst, Ashland head coach Sue Ramsey recorded her 200th victory at the school. Junior forward Jessica Minch (Centerville, OH) scored a career-high 27 points against the Lakers, going 11-of-12 from the field and 5-of-6 from the line. That followed a 15-point, 7-rebound performance against Gannon…junior guard Lisa Graue (Dayton, OH/Wayne) approached a triple-double with nine points, eight rebounds, nine assists, and added four steals against the Lakers…AU shot 51.3 percent from the field and 82.5 percent at the line in the two games.

Bulldogs
Ferris State scored the first 10 points of the game and never trailed in Saturday’s (Feb. 16) convincing league home win over Lake Superior State. All 14 Bulldog players saw action and scored at least two points in the initial half as FSU took a commanding 58-34 halftime advantage. The win was FSU’s fourth-straight series’ triumph over the Lakers. It also came as Ferris celebrated both “Think Pink” and “Health Care Awareness” Day before a crowd of 506 fans inside Jim Wink Arena. FSU currently trails both Northwood and Michigan Tech by one game in the GLIAC North Division race with two regular-season contests remaining for each team. FSU senior forward/center Rachel Folcik (Powers/Carney-Nadeau) currently ranks second in school history with 1,682 career points and is only 39 shy of tying Lucy DeMartin’s school-record total of 1,721 points at FSU.

Oilers
The Oilers lost both of their home games this week, losing 79-69 to Mercyhurst and then 85-80 to Gannon…The Oilers were lead by junior guard Brittany Wells who averaged 17.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game in the two losses…Junior Ashley Westenbarger had a game-high 19 points and went 5 for 6 from behind the arc in the loss to Mercyhurst…The Oilers players shared the ball as they had a game-high 16 assists and saw four players score double figures in a loss to Gannon…Findlay has now lost four straight games.

Golden Knights
The Lady Knights got off the deck last week with a huge road sweep at Ashland (68-67) and Findlay (85-80) … the victories kept Gannon’s hopes of hosting a GLIAC quarterfinal game alive… Gannon clinched its 11th consecutive GLIAC Tournament berth with Saturday’s victory at Findlay... Gannon has won 11 of its last 12 games against Findlay… Kristina Freeman (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) hit two free throws with 4.9 seconds left to defeat Ashland 68-67… Freeman scored 15 of her 17 points against Ashland in the second half and netted a career-high 30 points at Findlay… Ashley Lowdermilk (Kensington, Ohio/Carrollton) needs 32 points to move into Gannon’s all-time 10 in scoring ...Gannon needs to win its finaleagainst Mercyhurst and have Wayne State lose both games this week to host a quarterfinal home game.

Grand Valley State’s record is now 14-11, 9-7 after dropping games to Lake Superior State (71-69) and Wayne State (71-55)…Junior forward Kim Wyngaard (Kimberly, Wisc.) led the team in scoring this week, averaging 14.0 points per game…Sophomore forward Nicole Carr (Kalamazoo, Mich.) dominated the glass, averaging 9.5 rebounds per game and a total of 10 offensive rebounds for the week… She also grabbed seven steals and two blocks…Carr set a career-high on Saturday with 13 rebounds against Wayne State…She finished that game with a double-double, recording 17 points and 13 rebounds…Senior guard Crystal Zick (Byron Center, Mich.) scored 12 points against Lake Superior State, sending her past 1500 points in her career at GVSU…Zick ranks fifth all-time at GVSU in points and is the leading player in GVSU history in assists.

The winning streak has now reached nine games for the Hillsdale College women’s basketball team, who won two more games this weekend, over Ferris State and Tiffin… The Chargers have scored at least 42 points in the second half of their past six straight games, and have averaged outscoring their opposition in the second half by 12.7 points during the winning streak…Tiffin’s 18 second-half points Saturday are the fewest allowed by the Chargers in a half this season…Junior Katie Cezat became the school’s single-season shot blocks record holder Thursday, when her three blocks gave her 32 for the season…Hillsdale’s 21-3 record is its best after 24 games in school history, surpassing the 2002-03 team by one game…Junior Claire Aubrey scored a career-high 16 points in Thursday’s win over Ferris State…She has scored in double figures in a career-best four straight games…She has 10 double-figure scoring games overall this season…Sophomore Brooke Knight had her third double-digit assist game of the season Thursday against Ferris State.

Redshirt freshman Shelle Rochon (Hermansville, Mich.) came off the bench to make 4-of-5 three-point attempts and score a career-high 24 points to lead LSSU to a 71-69 win and the Lakers’ first victory at Grand Valley State since Dec. 13, 2003…LSSU gave up a season-high 104 points to Ferris State and allowed the Bulldogs to shoot a season-high 61.8 percent from the field during Saturday’s 104-78 victory in Big Rapids…LSSU will not receive a bid to the GLIAC Tournament for the first time since 1999-00…Senior guard Shalyn Beauchamp (Rock, Mich.) is ranked 16th in the GLIAC in rebounding (5.8 rpg), sixth in assists (4.79 apg), eighth in free-throw percentage (.804) and 14th in steals (1.88 spg). She is averaging 10.2 points per game. Beauchamp is ranked ninth in career three-pointers at LSSU with 77 and is tied for 10th in career assists with 239…Junior center Alyssa VanderWal (Allendale, Mich.) leads the GLIAC in field goal percentage (74-111, .667) and blocked shots with 49.

Laker freshmen Amy Achesinski and Samantha Loadman combined for 48 points and 21 rebounds as Mercyhurst completed a season sweep of Findlay with a 79-69 victory Thursday…With the win, Mercyhurst won its seventh game of the season, surpassing its total from a year ago…Achesinski posted her seventh double-double of the season with 26 points and 13 rebounds…Ranked tenth in the country in field goal percentage, she was 12-of-17 shooting…Loadman was 7-of-8 shooting for a career-best 22 points, making five three-pointers for the first time in her career…The Mercyhurst Lakers women’s basketball team suffered a 95-69 loss Saturday to the Ashland Eagles. Mara Dreiser scored a career high 19 points and three other Lakers recorded points in the double digits…In addition to Dreiser’s 19 points, Paris Pugliese ended the game with 14 points and tied her season high with nine rebounds…Amy Achesinski and Samantha Loadman both added 10 points.

Catherine Rottier (Seymour, Wis.) tallied 19 assists in two games last week to shatter the Michigan Tech single-season record for assists. The senior point guard now owns 142 assists on the season and a 5.9 per game average - good for third in the GLIAC. The old record was 130, set by Elizabeth Pietila in 2001-02 . Sophomore Katie Wysocky (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) eclipsed Tech’s school record for rebounds in a season by grabbing 20 boards in two games last weekend. The 6-0 forward has 257 rebounds on the season, besting the old record of 255 which was held by Sharon Walton from 1983-84 . Sophomore Danae Danen (Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) tallied 28 points and eight blocks in two games last week. The 6-0 forward improved her season block total to 38. She needs 12 more to break the current school record of 50.

NMU will face its two U.P. rivals this week, first up is a trip to Houghton to face Michigan Tech on Wednesday (Feb. 20) then the Wildcats host Lake Superior State on Saturday (Feb. 23)…Last week the ‘Cats split at home as they lost for the second time this season in overtime to Northwood (70-71) and defeated Saginaw Valley State (79-68) to snap its four-game skid…Allison Carroll had a team-high 18 points and nine rebounds against the Timberwolves…Steffani Stoeger poured in a career-high 27 points in the win over the Cardinals and added eight rebounds…Stoeger was 14-16 from the free throw line against SVSU…Carroll leads the team in points with 363 (15.1 ppg), rebounds with140 (5.8) and blocks with 23…Kelsey Deacon is second on the team in scoring with 297 points (12.4 ppg) and leads the team with 55 three-pointers…Stoeger has a team-leading 56 steals.

Timberwolves
Northwood continued its hot play of late, earning a pair of road victories at Northern Michigan (71-70 OT) and at No. 24 Michigan Tech (63-53) … the Timberwolves are now in a tie for the GLIAC North Division lead with MTU at 12-4 … Northwood has now posted four wins in a row and is 6-1 in their last seven and 9-2 in their last 11 …defense was the key for the Timberwolves lastweek, holding opponents to 37.5 percent shooting from the floor (42-112) and 28.2 percent from 3-point range (11-39) … sophomore forward Jodi Ostergren (Midland, Mich./Dow) led the way for the Timberwolves … she averaged 19.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game last week, shooting 63.6 percent from the floor (14-22) and 78.6 percent from the foul line (11-14) ... Ostergren netted 17 of her 19 points in the second half of the Timberwolves’ overtime win over Northern Michigan … she also added eight rebounds and went 7-8 from the foul line … Ostergren then led all scorers with 20 points in Northwood’s win over No. 24 Michigan Tech … she went 8-11 from the floor and grabbed eight rebounds … junior Megan Starnes (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) averaged a double-double for the Timberwolves last week, scoring 12.0 points while grabbing 10.0 rebounds per game.

The Cardinals lost both games in their road trip to the Upper Peninsula last weekend to fall to 11-14 overall and 4-12 in GLIAC play…freshman Brittany Burkhardt (West Bloomfield, Mich./Walled Lake Central) scored a team high 20 points in Saturday’s loss at Northern Michigan…Burkhardt has now scored at least 20 points in three of her last five games…Burkhardt became the first Cardinal player since the 1998-99 season to win GLIAC North “Player of the Week” honors twice in the same season after winning it that last two weeks…LaTille Ross (Opelika, Ala./Alabama St.) ranks seventh in the GLIAC in points per game (15.5) and rebounds per game (6.9)…Tricia Everett (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) continues to lead the conference in assists per game (6.48) and minutes played per game (38.64).

Wayne State has recorded two four-game win streaks in the last month and has won eight of its last nine contests to qualify for the GLIAC tournament for the eighth time in the last nine seasons … Saturday’s win over Grand Valley was the 100th at Wayne State for head coach Gloria Bradley … junior Jasmine McCall (Detroit, Mich./CMA) had five steals in each contest last week to move into fourth place on the WSU single-season list with 89 steals…Wayne State made 21 of 27 (.778) from the foul line last week to improve its free throw percentage to 67.6 … the Warriors recorded 19 steals against Grand Valley, the second-highest total in a game this season (WSU had 35 against Temple Baptist) … Wayne State held both opponents below 40 percent, the first time since Nov. 24-Dec. 3 that the Warrior defense held back-to-back opponents below 40 percent … GVSU made 1-of-19 three-pointers … junior Joy Nash (Muskegon, Mich.) had a career-high 24 points against Grand Valley including a personal-best four triples in five attempts … Nash has 27 assists to 12 turnovers in her last four games, and needs three assists to reach the century mark for the second straight season.
