The Eagles survived their longest road stretch in 14 years, going 5-1 in six consecutive road contests…it was also the first time in school history Ashland has completed a regular-season sweep of the three Upper Peninsula schools (Northern Michigan, Michigan Tech, Lake Superior State)…AU hadn’t won at Michigan Tech in 10 years before upsetting the #19 Huskies on a three-pointer from junior point guard Alethea Lamberson (London, OH) with 10 seconds left and holding on for the one-point victory…junior guard Lisa Graue paved the way for AU in the two wins, averaging 18.5 ppg., 6.5 rpg., shooting 80.0 percent (8-of-10) at the line, and recording 6 steals…junior Jessica Minch posted her second double-double of the season (15 points, 12 rebounds) in the win at Lake Superior State…Ashland committed a season-low seven turnovers in the win against Michigan Tech…the Eagles are 6-4 on the road and have won 6 of their last 7 contests away from home…when Ashland and Ferris State meet on Thursday night, it will be AU’s first game at Kates Gymnasium in 28 days, since a 81-66 loss to Hillsdale...AU is 5-2 at home.

The Ferris State University women’s basketball squad suffered a heart-breaking 75-74 overtime loss against the nationally-ranked Michigan Tech Huskies in a key GLIAC North Division battle Saturday (Jan. 26) afternoon in Houghton, Mich. The 19th-ranked Huskies outscored FSU by a single-point in overtime to claim the victory. Ferris had a final shot in the extra period to claim the win, but junior forward Caitlin Hutchison’s (Riverview) shot under the basket just rimmed out as the overtime buzzer sounded. Ferris State controlled play for much of the initial part of the opening half as the Bulldogs built a 12-point edge with 12:27 to play in the period. Ferris put on a shooting clinic for much of the contest as the Bulldogs scored an impressive 81-66 league road win over Northern Michigan in the opening game of the trip Thursday (Jan. 24) evening at Marquette, Mich. FSU shot 67.3% (33-49) for the game, including a 73% first half figure, en route to the win.

Oilers
The Oilers split a pair of games last week by winning 83-51 against Ohio Valley and losing 74-65 to Northern Michigan… Freshman guard Cate Cianchetti came off the bench to lead the Oilers in their two games last week by averaging 20.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game…In the Oilers win over Ohio Valley, Cianchetti established a new career-high with 17 points and five rebounds and then topped it with 23 points in the loss to Northern Michigan…Cianchetti hit 16-of-20 (80.0%) of her field goal attempts and drained 5-of-6 (83.4%) of her three pointers in the two contests…As a team in the win over Ohio Valley, Findlay grabbed 58 rebounds, the second highest total this season…For the weekend, the Oilers out-rebounded their opponents 93-78 and grabbed 25 offensive boards.

The Lady Knights concluded a four-game road trip at 0-4 with a pair of losses at Wayne State (78-76) and Hillsdale (61-54) … Gannon has lost four consecutive games for the first time since November 18-26, 2005 … Gannon began the road trip with 27 consecutive victories when leading at halftime, but lost after leading at halftime in three of the four games … Kim Vargas (Sterling, Va./Broad Run) averaged 27 points and eight rebounds last week … Vargas scored a career-high 32 points at Wayne State, becoming the first Lady Knight to score 30 points in a game since January 2, 2005 … Vargas has scored 77 points and grabbed 20 rebounds in the last three games … Allison Rothlisberger (New Martinsville, W.Va./Magnolia) pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds at Hillsdale … Gannon shot 51 percent at Wayne State, but the Warriors had a 28-8 edge in points off turnovers.

The Lakers earned wins against Northwood (55-52) and Saginaw Valley State (58-53) this week, upping their record to 13-6, 8-2…Grand Valley State has now won four games in a row, their second longest streak of the season…Senior guard Crystal Zick (Byron Center, Mich.) led the team in scoring over the week, averaging 17.5 points…Sophomore Nicole Carr (Kalamazoo, Mich.) grabbed nine rebounds in each game to lead the team…Carr’s nine rebounds were a career-high…The Lakers have the top-ranked scoring defense in the league, allowing just 56.2 points per game.

The Chargers maintained their lead in the GLIAC South Division after two more key division wins over the weekend …Hillsdale enjoyed a satisfying 61-54 win over Gannon Saturday, breaking their four-game losing streak to the Golden Knights…Hillsdale defeated Mercyhurst for the 20th time in 25 all-time meetings Thursday, 71-37…The 37 points allowed to the Lakers were the lowest yielded by Hillsdale in a game this season…Junior Katie Cezat had perhaps her finest game of this breakout season Saturday, getting 24 points and 25 rebounds…Her 25 rebounds broke a school record she tied earlier this season…Cezat had 20 of her rebounds on the defensive end…She currently leads the GLIAC in both scoring (20.9) and rebounding (12.4)…Cezat made it into 10th place on Hillsdale’s all-time, single-season rebounding list with her 25 boards Saturday…Senior Julie Slot has scored in double figures in eight straight games…Sophomore Janay Miller has scored 10 or more points in three straight games, after having four such games in the team’s first 14.

Senior guard Shalyn Beauchamp (Rock, Mich.) scored 14 second-half points against Ashland on Saturday to help bring the Lakers back from a 24-point deficit. She finished the game with 18 points as the Lakers cut the lead to four before losing 67-61. For the week, Beauchamp averaged 13.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game. She shot 58.8 percent from the field. She is ranked 15th in the GLIAC in rebounding at 6.2 rpg and fifth in assists per game at 4.85…Junior center Alyssa VanderWal (Allendale, Mich.)totaled 11 points and 11 rebounds during last week’s 61-59 victory at Saginaw Valley State for her second career double double. She has had two double doubles in the Lakers’ last four games. VanderWal leads the GLIAC in field-goal percentage at .674 and blocked shots with 42…Freshman guards Shelle Rochon (Hermansville, Mich.) and Katherine LaPrairie (Rockford, Mich.) came off the bench and made 3-of-6 three-point attempts to help the Lakers beat the Cardinals. Rochon, LaPrairie and freshman Nicole Marshall are shooting a combined 40 percent from behind the arc.

The Lakers dropped two GLIAC losses this weekend to conference opponents Hillsdale (71-37) and Wayne State (93-73)…Mercyhurst is now 1-9 in the GLIAC and 6-14 on the year…Against Hillsdale, Mara Dreiser was the only Laker to score in double-digits with 10 points…The difference in the game came when Mercyhurst committed 34 turnovers to the Chargers’ 12…Hillsdale also recorded 16 steals against the Lakers…Despite a loss against Wayne State, Amy Achesinski was 13-of-16 shooting Saturday, 12-of-15 from the free-throw line, and added eight rebounds for the Lakers…The 38 points is the highest single game total for a Mercyhurst player in more than 15 years…She is the first Laker to score 30 in a game since Amy Galla had 32 against Lake Superior State in 2001…The Lakers will host Northwood Thursday and Saginaw Valley Saturday this week.

Michigan Tech had its nine-game winning streak snapped, but remain atop the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings with a 9-2 league record. Tech is 16-4 overall having won 10 of its last 11 games and 16 of its last 18 . Senior Catherine Rottier (Seymour, Wis.) moved over 100 assists for the season with 10 in two games last week. The 5-8 point guard is the first Tech player since 2001-02 (Elizabeth Pietila, 130)to reach to hit triple figures in assists. Rottier owns 106 assists on the campaign and is averaging 5.6 per game. She is on pace to finish the regular season with a school-record 145. Sophomore Katie Wysocky (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) averaged 16.0 points and 16.0 rebounds in two games last weekend. The 6-0 forward became the first Tech player to record 200 rebounds in a season since 1993-94 when Dawn Zarling tallied 247. Wysocky is on pace to finish the regular season with 282..

The NMU women’s basketball team will take a quick trek over to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. to face Lake Superior State in its only action of the week…Last week the Wildcats split at home as they lost to Ferris State and defeated Findlay…With the win over the Oilers the ‘Cats snapped a four-game losing skid…Allison Carroll led the ‘Cats against the Bulldogs with 16 points, she continues to lead the team in scoring with 14.9 ppg…Kelsey Deacon led the ‘Cats against Findlay with 22 points, she only had two points at the half…Deacon is second on the team in scoring with 12.7 ppg and has 53 assists to lead the team…Carroll has a team-leading 112 rebounds (5.9 rpg)…NMU is out-rebounding its opponents by +3.5 rebounds a game…Deacon has made 45 three-pointers to lead the team, second on the list is Natalie Larocque with 16.

Northwood now stands at 12-6 overall, 7-3 in the GLIAC after splitting a pair of games last week … the Timberwolves saw their three-game winning streak come to an end with a 55-52 loss to Grand Valley before downing Tiffin on the road … Northwood has now played eight straight games that have been decided by six points or less, going 4-2 in that stretch … junior guard Sarah Glowacki (Freeland, Mich.) had a strong week, averaging 13.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game … she shot 50.0 percent from the floor (8-16), 50.0 percent from 3-point range (4-8) and 87.5 percent from the foul line (7-8) … Jodi Ostergren (Midland, Mich./Dow) had her best game in a while against Tiffin, finishing with 20 points while going 12-15 from the foul line … NU has already registered three more overall wins than last season (12-9) and four more conference wins than a year ago (7-3).

The Cardinals went 1-2 last week, with the win coming at Central State by a score of 66-54…LaTille Ross (Opelika, Ala./Alabama St.) led the Cardinals in scoring in games against Central State (27 points) and Lake Superior State (22)…Ross’ 27 points at Central State tied a season and career high…Ross now ranks fifth in the GLIAC in points per game (16.7), eighth in the conference in rebounds per game (6.7)…Ross also ranks tenth in field goal percentage (.522) and free throw percentage (.804)…Tricia Everett (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) set a season high with 17 points in the Cardinals’ loss to Lake Superior State…Everett currently leads the GLIAC in assists per game (7.11) and minutes per game (38.84), while also ranking fifth in steals per game (2.47)…Kara Kinzer (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica Eisenhower) matched Everett’s 15 points against Grand Valley State on the strength of five three-point field goals…Kinzer currently leads the GLIAC three-pointers made with 49 on the season…Brittany Burns (Saginaw, Mich./Alabama St.) and Kinzer rank 14th and 18th in the GLIAC in points per game.

The Warriors evened their conference mark last week with wins over Gannon and Mercyhurst … junior Chastidy Miller (White Lake, Mich./Waterford Kettering) recorded 52 points in the two games including a career-high 32 in the win over the Lady Knights … sophomore Brooke Bowers (Delphos, Ohio/Jefferson) set a Warrior record with nine three-pointers made along with a career-best 35 points in the victory over Mercyhurst … junior point guard Joy Nash (Muskegon, Mich.) had 17 assists on only two turnovers in the two contests … senior Nicole Rogers (Lansing, Mich./Everett) is slated to play in her 100th game this Saturday … Rogers moved into sixth place on the WSU all-time rebounding list with 592 surpassing Debbie Waschewski (1977-80) … Miller made three three-pointers vs. MC, the fifth time this year she hit the triples in a contest … it was also the fifth time this year and 10th in her career that she scored 20 points in a game.
