Ashland earned a split at the GLIAC-GLVC Classic over the weekend, held at the University of Indianapolis. AU tallied 98 points in a victory over Saint Joseph’s. All 12 available players played at least 11 minutes, scored at least three points, and pulled down a rebound. Five Eagles scored in double figures, including senior forward Elizabeth O’Brien (Mansfield, OH/Madison) with 14 points, freshman guard Rachel Poorman (Zanesville, OH/Maysville) with 13 tallies, and sophomore guard Michele Kuns (Castalia, OH/Margaretta) with 11 points and 5 rebounds. Two AU starters scored in double-digits; junior point guard Alethea Lamberson (London, OH) added 11 points and sophomore guard Lacy Romine (Kettering, OH/Fairmont) put in 10. Ashland enjoyed a 30-0 advantage in fast break points and received 61 bench points. The Eagles pulled down 30 offensive rebounds over the weekend, including 14 by junior forward Jessica Minch (Centerville, OH), who leads Ashland with 9.5 boards per game. She also recorded her first career double-double, with 13 points and 12 rebounds against Indianapolis. In just her second game back after a season-ending knee injury kept her out all of last year, junior guard Lisa Graue (Dayton, OH/Wayne) tallied 12 points and 8 rebounds against Indianapolis.

FSU earned runner-up honors in the season-opening Quincy (Ill.) Subway Tipoff Tournament held Friday and Saturday (Nov. 16-17) in QU’s Pepsi Arena at Quincy, Ill. The Bulldogs recorded an 87-82 win over the host Hawks in their season opener Friday before falling to nationally fifth-ranked Delta State (Miss.) 93-71 in Saturday’s tournament championship game... Junior forward/center Jenna Guay (Escanaba) was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 16.5 points and 9.5 rebounds in the two games. The 6-1 Guay netted a personal career-high 21 points and grabbed five rebounds in FSU’s loss to Delta State after posting 12 points and grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds in the Bulldogs’ win Friday over Quincy. Guay converted 13-of-19 (.684) field goal attempts and seven-of-10 (.700) free throws in the two outings... Junior guard Teghan Thelen (Pewamo/Westphalia) averaged a team-high 18.5 points per contest in the two games, including a 23-point performance versus Quincy. Senior forward/center Rachel Folcik (Powers/Carney-Nadeau) tallied 14.5 points per contest in the event.

Oilers
The Oilers split a pair of games at the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge last weekend in Indianapolis, Indiana…The Oilers lost their first game 82-67 to Indianapolis and then defeated Saint Joseph’s 76-41 in their second game…Findlay forced 42 turnovers in the two games…The also dished out 40 assists…Freshman forward Kendra Robbins led the way by averaging 13.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game during the event in only 28 minutes of total action…In the Oilers win over the Pumas, Robbins had 18 points and ten rebounds…Freshman guard Cate Cianchetti established herself during the event by scoring 15 points in the win over Saint Joseph’s…Junior guard Brittany Wells had a great all-around two games, averaging 8.5 points, 5.5 assists, 2.0 steals, 1.5 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game.

Gannon opened the season with a split last weekend at the Wheeling Jesuit Tip-Off Classic … Kristina Freeman (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) opened the season on fire, posting career-highs in points (24) and steals (5) during a three-point loss to West Liberty State … Freeman added a career-high seven assists against Wheeling Jesuit the next day … Kim Vargas (Sterling, Va./Broad Run) recorded her first career double-double in the opener with 10 points and a career-high 13 rebounds … Vargas added a career-high 18 points the next day against Wheeling Jesuit … Allison Rothlisberger (New Martinsville, W.Va./Magnolia) grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds against the Cardinals … Gannon has won 21 consecutive games dating back to the 2005-06 season when leading at halftime … the Lady Knights play Tuesday, November 20 at Tiffin before taking nine days off until their GLIAC opener against Northern Michigan on Nov. 29.

#19 Grand Valley State dropped its first two games of the season on the road over the weekend…The Lakers outrebounded their two opponents by a 45-33.5 margin…Grand Valley pulled down 38 offensive rebounds, while its opponents had just 20…GVSU also posted 14 steals, while its opponents had just seven…Senior guard Crystal Zick averaged 18.5 points, 5.0 assists, and 5.0 rebounds in the two games, while senior guard Erin Cyplik added 12.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 1.5 steals…Junior forward Kim Wyngaard averaged a double-double, recording 10.5 points and 10.0 rebounds…Grand Valley State will play it home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 20 as they host Saint Joseph’s College at 6:00 p.m. in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena…The Lakers will then host Lewis at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24.

For the second year in a row, the Hillsdale College women’s basketball team won an early-season tournament, this time taking home the trophy from the Wolf Bus Lines Tournament at Shippensburg (Pa.)…Junior Katie Cezat was named the tournament MVP, and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by senior Julie Slot…Cezat made her first two career starts over the weekend and scored a total of 44 points in 57 minutes played…Her 26 points Friday are a career-high…She grabbed nine rebounds in each of the first two games and shot 63 percent from the field…Freshman Kara McCormick came off the bench to score a career-high 13 Saturday vs. Shippensburg…Slot scored in double figures in both games…Sophomore Brooke Knight had a career-high 12 rebounds in Saturday’s win…Hillsdale will play in tournaments during each of the next two weekends, starting Nov. 24 at the Ashland Thanksgiving Classic.

Senior Danielle Makins (Grosse Ile, Mich.) scored six straight points late in the second half to protect an LSSU lead against Lewis during the Lakers’ season opener. She had 12 points in that game and scored a team-leading 15 points against Wisconsin-Parkside. She shot 12-of-19 from the field for 63 percent for the weekend…LSSU came from behind in both games of the GLIAC v. GLVC Challenge. The Lakers trailed Lewis by as many as nine points in the first half and won. They cut a 15-point UWP lead to four points with 2:40 to go, but couldn’t get any closer…Senior guard Shalyn Beauchamp (Rock, Mich.) and junior center Jackie Armstrong (Haslett, Mich.) posted double doubles against Lewis. Beauchamp totaled 11 points and a career-high 10 rebounds in that contest, and averaged 12.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 6.5 assists for the weekend. Armstrong totaled 10 points and 12 rebounds against the Flyers, and averaged 10.0 points and 8.0 rebounds for the weekend…LSSU plays two more GLVC opponents on Nov. 23 and 24 when it takes on Kentucky Wesleyan and SIUE at the Ferris State Thanksgiving Tournament. LSSU is 1-0 all-time against SIUE and has never played Kentucky Wesleyan.

The Mercyhurst Lakers women’s basketball team went 1-1 this week by defeating Mansfield 67-61 on Thursday and the dropping its home opener 80-67 to Le Moyne…Junior Stephanie Prischak led all scorers with 23 points against Mansfield and then led all Mercyhurst scorers with 18 points against Le Moyne…Freshman Amy Achesinski racked up 16 rebounds against Mansfield and then contributed a team high 8 rebounds against Le Moyne…Freshman Samantha Loadman had a huge game against Le Moyne, putting up 15 points, three assists, and three rebounds…The Lakers return to action on Tuesday when it plays host to Northern Kentucky at 5:30 p.m.

Michigan Tech opened its 2007-08 season against UW-Parkside for the third consecutive year as part of the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge … A pair of sophomores are leading the Huskies in scoring. Danae Danen (Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) is averaging a team-high 13 points per game. Katie Wysocky (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) is averaging 12.5 points per game to go with 10.0 rebounds per game … Senior Catherine Rottier (Seymour, Wis.) tallied 19 points and 14 rebounds in two games last weekend to run her career totals to 849 points and 489 rebounds … Tech is in its 33rd season of intercollegiate women’s basketball.

The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team opened up the 2007-08 season at the Wildwood Lodge Tournament at Concordia-St. Paul…NMU lost to Augustana (67-57) and to CSP (88-66)...This week the ‘Cats face St. Cloud State and UM-Duluth at the UM-Duluth Tournament…Allison Carroll was named to the all-tournament team, she had 17 points and 11 rebounds against Augustana and 11 points against Concordia-St. Paul…Natalie Larocque led the ‘Cats against CSP with a team-high 19 points….Larocque was 5-7 from the floor against CSP which included 5-6 from the three-point line…NMU outrebounded Augustana 44-38.

Northwood split a pair of games to open the season at the Pepsi Tip-off tournament, defeating St. Cloud State 84-59 before falling to host Minnesota State 81-74 … NU featured a balanced attack in both games, as the Timberwolves finished both games with five players in double figures … overall, six Northwood players are averaging at least 10.0 points per game … junior Sarah Glowacki (Freeland, Mich.) played her best basketball as a Timberwolf, averaging 16.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game while committing just four turnovers … her 11 assists were the most for any player at the four-team event … she had 18 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals – all of which were career-highs against St. Cloud State … against Minnesota State, Glowacki finished with 15 points, five assists and three rebounds … junior Megan Starnes (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) finished the week averaging 13.0 points per game while shooting 57.1 percent from the floor and 90.0 percent from the foul line … NU will host Rochester in its lone action of the week Tuesday at 5 p.m.

SVSU started its season at the Vivian Samson Classic, finishing the tournament with a 1-1 record… the Cardinals won their first game of the tournament against Barton College, 60-58…host team Shaw University, which entered the contest as the #13 team in the country, beat the Cardinals in overtime, 82-78…guards Tricia Everett (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) and Kara Kinzer (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica Eisenhower) were named to the All-Tournament team for their performances…LaTille Ross carried the Cardinals in their win over Barton, picking up her first double-double of the season with 14 points and 15 rebounds…senior Brittany Burns scored a career high 26 points against Shaw…freshman Brittany Burkhardt (West Bloomfield, Mich./Walled Lake Central) scored double figures in her first two games, including finishing with ten points and nine rebounds off the bench against Shaw.

Warriors
Wayne State went 1-1 at the Wheeling Jesuit Tip-Off Classic with a victory over the host Cardinals (65-52) on Friday evening and setback to West Liberty (75-51) the next afternoon. Junior Jasmine McCall (Detroit, Mich./CMA) led the Warriors in scoring in both games tallying 13 points in each contest. She also contributed five assists and six steals in the win and eight rebounds in the loss. Sophomore Brooke Bowers (Delphos, Ohio/Jefferson) had 10 points against WJU, while senior center Bethany Jury (Plymouth, Mich./Livonia Ladywood) grabbed 10 rebounds in only 13 minutes. Junior Chastidy Miller (White Lake, Mich./Waterford Kettering) and senior Nicole Rogers (Lansing, Mich./Everett) each had eight rebounds versus the Hilltoppers. The Warriors will have their home opener this Saturday against Madonna to close out the November portion of their schedule.
