SVSUs Treiber and AU's Snider Chosen As GLIAC Volleyball North and South Division "Players of the Week", Respectively

BAY CITY, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State University junior outside hitter Jessica Treiber (Sebewaing, Mich./Unionville-Sebewaing) and Ashland University freshman outside hitter Brittany Snider (Olmsted Falls, Ohio) have been chosen as the GLIAC Volleyball North and South Division "Players of the Week", respectively it was announced by the league office.

SVSU junior Jessica Treiber led the Cardinals to a 2-0 weekend, featuring victories over GLIAC North Division opponents Ferris State (10/30) and Grand Valley State (10/31). Treiber had 14 kills in the 3-1 victory over the Bulldogs and had 13 in the sweep of the Lakers. She hit at a .393 percentage in the seven sets played while adding five blocks and four digs in the victories.

Freshman Brittany Snider helped the Eagles win two South Division matches this past weekend. Snider racked up 16 kills against Wayne State and 19 kills against Northwood. Against the Warriors she also had 20 digs and finished with a .351 hitting percentage. Against the Timberwolves, she had 12 digs to go with her .391 hitting percentage. On the week, she averaged 5.83 kills per set, 5.33 digs per set, had a .373 hitting percentage and 6.17 points per set.

Ashland Eagles (14-12, 8-7 GLIAC)
The Eagles went 2-0 this past week against South Division opponents. The wins brought AU to 14-12 overall and 8-7 in league play. Ashland hosted Wayne State on Friday (Oct. 30) and won, 3-0. On Saturday (Oct. 31), Northwood came to Kates Gymnasium and met the same 3-0 fate. Freshman Brittany Snider racked up 16 kills against Wayne State and 19 kills against Northwood. Against the Warriors she also had 20 digs and finished with a .351 hitting percentage. Against the Timberwolves, she had 12 digs to go with her .391 hitting percentage. On the season, Snider averages 4.31 kills per set, which is top ten in the nation. She has had double-digit kills in 13 consecutive matches and 22 out of 23 matches. The Eagles have won three matches in a row and six out of seven. Ashland travels to Tiffin on Wednesday (Nov. 4) and hosts California (PA) on Friday (Nov. 6).
Ferris State Bulldogs (18-9, 9-5 GLIAC)
Junior middle hitter Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids/Central) extended her current double-digit kills match streak to 16 consecutive with a match-high 12 kills at Lake Superior State last Saturday (10/31). Goodson, who has amassed 21 such outings this season, is hitting at a .266 clip with 216 kills and a 3.32 kills per set average during that 16-match span. Ferris State’s top two digs leaders this season, sophomore libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville) and sophomore outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) have generated 48.2% (679-1,409) of the 2009 squad’s digs production this season. Tobiczyk has dug up a team-leading 364 balls (3.50 avg.) in 27 contests.FSU is currently 17-21 overall (.447) in November matches dating back to the 2000 season. The Bulldogs are 10-4 at home and 7-17 in road/neutral site contests during that period. FSU dropped all four of its November contests a season ago.
Findlay Oilers (14-17, 4-10 GLIAC)
Findlay has won 8 of its last 10 matches behind strong play from outside hitters Abby LaVigne and Erin Thomasson. Setter Megan Florence is averaging 7 kills per set and has earned a spot UF single-season aces top ten list with 76. The Oilers hope to avenge early season home losses to Northwood and Wayne State this week and finish the season on a 5 game winning streak and having won 10 of their last 12.
Grand Valley State Lakers (15-10, 10-4 GLIAC)
The Lakers went 1-1 on the road over the weekend, winning at Lake Superior State on Friday before falling at Saginaw Valley State on Saturday. GVSU is now 9-9 away from Allendale, with a 4-6 record in true road matches. Grand Valley State will finish its regular season schedule at home this weekend against Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech. The Lakers are 6-1 at home this season and 37-1 in Fieldhouse Arena over the past three years. GVSU remains the league’s top blocking team, as the Lakers picked up 17 total blocks this weekend, pushing the team’s average to 2.53 blocks per set. Grand Valley State has three players in the top-10 in the conference in blocks and five Lakers are in the top-20 of that category. Redshirt freshman Eno Umoh (Wyoming, Mich./Park) is averaging 1.12 blocks per set and is fourth in the GLIAC. Junior Rebeccah Rapin (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central) leads GVSU with 98 total blocks and is sixth in the league in blocks per set.
Hillsdale Chargers (18-7, 10-4 GLIAC)
The Hillsdale College volleyball team lost to the University of Findlay for the first time in four years Friday night, 3-2. The Chargers had won eight in a row over the Oilers. The Chargers clinched the GLIAC South Division title despite the loss, and with two wins and one loss by Northern Michigan, can clinch the GLIAC’s number one overall seed heading into the conference tournament. Sophomore Clara Leutheuser had 10 kills and no errors for a .500 attack percentage at Findlay. The Chargers need one more win to hit 19 for the sixth year in a row…Hillsdale is currently number seven in the latest Great Lakes Regional poll. The top eight teams qualify for the national postseason tournament. As a team, Hillsdale leads the GLIAC in hitting percentage and is second in opponents’ hitting percentage. The team is also first in the conference in kills as a team and second in total blocks. Leutheuser is first in the conference in hitting percentage, first in blocks and 10th in kills per set. Hillsdale has also clinched hosting a first-round GLIAC tournament match on Wednesday, Nov. 11.
Lake Superior State Lakers (3-23, 2-13 GLIAC)
Seniors Sara Hess (Owosso, Mich.) and Jessica Ewer (Amherstburg, Ont.) played in their final home matches and combined to total 30 kills and a .197 attack percentage in losses to Grand Valley State and Ferris State. Hess leads the Lakers in kills with 114, attack percentage at .157 and blocks with 67. Ewer is second in kills with 159, attack percentage at .137 and digs with 248. Ewer leads LSSU in service percentage (.981) and service reception percentage (.950). Sophomore libero Brittany Newberry (Iron Mountain, Mich.) leads the GLIAC and is ranked sixth nationally in average digs per game (5.77).
Michigan Tech. Huskies (13-12, 9-5 GLIAC)
Michigan Tech will close out the regular season this weekend with a pair of matches at Ferris State (Nov. 6) and Grand Valley State (Nov. 7). Tech defeated rival Northern Michigan 3-2 in its only match of the week. The Huskies have won four of its last five matches. The team hit .299 in the match against NMU, third best this season. Sophomore Kristine Sexton led the team with a .485 hitting percentage, second highest of the season by any Tech player, and 17 kills. With the win, the Huskies secured a spot in the GLIAC Tournament.
Northern Michigan Wildcats (17-9, 10-4 GLIAC)
The Northern Michigan University volleyball team closes out the regular season with road matches at Grand Valley State Friday and Ferris State Saturday. Last week the Wildcats split as they defeated Finlandia in a non-conference match at home and lost to Michigan Tech in Houghton. NMU had a season-high hitting percentage against Finlandia with a .438 on 46 kills in 89 total attempts. Mandie Meyer recorded a match-high 24 kills at Michigan Tech. Meyer leads the team with 340 kills (3.37 k/s). Abby Lovell had 45 assists against the Huskies for her second highest match of the season, she is currently second on the team with 409 assists. Cassie Osiecki recorded 18 digs and two service aces at MTU, for the season she has 391 digs and 23 service aces. Emma Wolfe led the ‘Cats at MTU at the net with three block assists, she is tied for the team lead in block solos with 13 and has 38 block assists and 51 total blocks for second on the team.
Northwood Timberwolves (8-17, 6-8 GLIAC)
Northwood went 1-1 last week, defeating Tiffin 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 27-25) before falling 3-0 at Ashland (25-18, 25-19, 25-19). The Timberwolves are now 8-17 overall, 6-8 in the GLIAC. NU enters the final week of the regular season one game behind Wayne State for a spot in the GLIAC Tournament. Both Northwood and Wayne State finish the season with matches against Findlay and Hillsdale. Two Timberwolves averaged more than three kills per set last week - Slajdana Mitrovic (Lazarevac, Serbia (Sport Academy DIF) and Jolyn Timms (Adrian, Mich.) finished at 3.5 and 3.0, respectively. Samantha Hausmann (Marne, Mich. (Coopersville/Grand Rapids C.C.) matched her career-high with 11 kills at Ashland. NU plays Friday night versus Findlay at 7 p.m. before taking on Hillsdale Saturday at 4 p.m.
Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (18-8, 11-4 GLIAC)
The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team went 2-0 this past weekend with a 3-1 victory over Ferris State University (10/30) and a 3-0 sweep of Grand Valley State University (10/31). Against Ferris, Allison Schlinkert posted 15 kills and six digs for the Cardinals while Jessica Treiber recorded 14 kills and four blocks. Kait Harris posted 50 assists, five digs and two aces. Katie Fitzgerald had 10 kills and four blocks while Laura Ward 19 digs in the four-set victory. In the match with Grand Valley State, Treiber posted 13 kills while hitting .367 for the contest. Schlinkert had another double-digit kills effort, posting 11 against the Lakers along with eight digs. Harris had 35 assists and six digs in the sweep. Ward recorded 29 digs for SVSU. Jaclyn Carnago had seven kills while hitting .429 to go along with three aces and a block. The Cardinals wrap-up their 2009 GLIAC regular season at home against Lake Superior State University on Saturday, Nov. 6.
Tiffin Dragons (3-26, 0-15 GLIAC)
Tiffin University fell in three sets at Notre Dame, falling 13-25, 18-25, 14-25. Brooke Bernabei had 8 kills, Trisha Hellein had 8 digs, and Brittany Teaford had 3 blocks to lead the Dragons…Tiffin University couldn’t keep pace with Northwood, falling in three straight sets 23-25, 13-25, 25-27. The Dragons got eight kills and three assists from Giavana DiPietro in the loss. Jessica Adams had 26 assists for TU while Margaret Betz had nine kills. Brooke Bernabei added six kills and two assists for the Dragons while Lindsay Heller led the team with 20 digs…Tiffin University battled in all three games but could not pick up a victory, falling to Wayne State 22-25, 21-25, 20-25. The Dragons were led by Margaret Betz's 12 kills, while Brittany Teaford had 8 kills and 5 blocks. Jess Adams led in setting with 33 assists.
Wayne State Warriors (18-7, 7-7 GLIAC)
After being shut out for just the second time this season Friday night at Ashland, Wayne State snapped its five-match conference losing streak with a 3-0 victory at Tiffin. The Warriors, who are in third place in the South Division, exceeded their 2008 win total (17) with two matches remaining. Sarha Gosselin (Harrison Twp., Mich./Warren Lincoln) led Wayne State with 19 kills along with 17 digs, while Candis Jenich (Warren, Mich./Cousino) contributed 18 kills and a team-best 28 digs, including a career-high 21 against the Eagles. Lauren Mallast (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay), who had nine kills and hit .438 versus the Dragons, compiled seven blocks over the two matches and has 286 for her career, surpassing Kristin Haewski (1987-88; 282) for ninth all-time at WSU. The Warriors, looking for a GLIAC Tournament berth for the second straight season, will host first-place Hillsdale on Friday at the Matthaei before wrapping up the regular season Saturday against Findlay.
