GLIAC Honors: AU’s Snider, Freshman of the Year; HC’s Dow, Libero of the Year, HC’s Gravel, Coach of the Year

BAY CITY, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State University senior setter Kait Harris (Essexville, Mich./Garber) was named the 2009 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) volleyball “Player of the Year” in voting conducted by the league’s head coaches. Ashland University’s Brittany Snider (Olmsted Falls, Ohio) was tabbed “Freshman of the Year,” while Hillsdale College junior Sydney Dow (Jonesville, Mich.) earned “Libero of the Year” honors. Hillsdale’s Chris Gravel was named “Coach of the Year” by his peers.

Kait Harris - Saginaw Valley State University Harris led SVSU to a share of the program’s first-ever GLIAC Championship, as SVSU posted a 12-4 record in GLIAC contests and a 19-8 overall record. At the setter position, Kait posted 953 assists in a total of 95 sets for an average of 10.03/set, and led the conference with 11.13/set in GLIAC matches only. Harris also posted 218 digs on the season and had 30 aces and 22 blocks. She recorded 84 kills on the season and posted a .338 attack percentage while helping the Cardinals claim the league’s North Division title.

Brittany Snider - Ashland University Snider has been one of the top performers for the Eagles all season, currently leading the conference in kills per set at 4.34, which also places her eighth in the nation. She has totaled 458 kills to go along with 271 digs, 24 aces and 21 total blocks. Snider has reached the 20+ kills plateau eight times this season. She has had double-digit kills in 15 consecutive matches and 25 out of the 28 total matches. Her 26 kill total earlier in the season is tied for the highest number of kills for any individual in a single match.

Sydney Dow - Hillsdale College Dow followed up her Second Team All-GLIAC season in 2008 with the “Libero of the Year” honor in 2009. A co-captain of the Chargers, Dow provided excellent leadership and consistent back-row play for the team all season. She was named to the All-Tournament Team at both the University of Findlay and at the 2009 Asics GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Tournaments. She ranks third in the GLIAC in digs per set, and had at least 10 digs in 23 of the team’s 27 matches this season. Dow has been part of two GLIAC South Division championship teams in her three seasons at Hillsdale.

Chris Gravel - Hillsdale College Gravel collected his third GLIAC “Coach of the Year” honor in 2009, while leading a young Chargers team to the GLIAC South Division championship. He guided a lineup that often included four sophomores, one junior and one freshman to a 20-7 record during the regular season, the sixth straight campaign Hillsdale has won at least 19 matches. Hillsdale was ranked as high as 22nd in the AVCA Division II Top 25 poll, while holding first place in the GLIAC South Division from start to finish. He was previously named the conference coach of the year in 1999 and 2006.
