SVSU's Redoute and Wayne State's Mallast Named GLIAC Volleyball North and South Division Players of the Week, Respectively

Bay City, Mich. -- Saginaw Valley State University senior outside hitter Sarah Redoute and Wayne State University junior middle blocker Lauren Mallast have been selected as the GLIAC Volleyball North and South Division Players of the Week, respectively. 

North Division Player of the Week:
Sarah Redoute - Saginaw Valley State
(SR, OH, Clinton Twp., Mich. / L'Anse Creuse)

Senior outside hitter Sarah Redoute has led the Cardinals to a 4-1 record to start the GLIAC season, including a 3-0 mark last week after recording 30 kills, 13 blocks, and 21 digs. In a 3-0 victory over Ashland (9/20), Redoute tallied 10 kills, nine digs, and two blocks. Against Lake Superior State (9/16) in another three-set match, Redoute had 11 kills, five digs, and four blocks. Redoute is currently leading the GLIAC in kills-per-set (3.72) and points-per-set (4.53).

South Division Player of the Week:
Lauren Mallast - Wayne State

Wayne State junior middle blocker Lauren Mallast registered 35 kills and a .380 hitting percentage in WSU's three victories last week. Her 10 kills and eight blocks Tuesday versus Northwood aided the Warriors in earning their first GLIAC win of the year. Mallast notched 11 kills and five blocks Friday against Findlay before totaling 14 kills, seven blocks, two aces and a .440 hitting percentage in Saturday's upset over #19 Hillsdale. Mallast leads the conference in blocking this season (1.51 B/S) and ranks 10th in hitting percentage (.308).

Ashland- Ashland played their first home match of the season on Tuesday (Sept 16) against Tiffin. The match was moved to Ashland because of power outage to Tiffin's gymnasium made it unplayable in Tiffin. To make up for the movement of this match when the two teams meet up on Nov. 4th the match will be moved from Ashland to Tiffin. AU beat Tiffin, 3-1. Ashland then went on the road to face Lake Superior State on Friday (Sept. 19) and Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (Sept. 20). The Eagles lost both matches to drop their record to 6-6 overall and 2-3 in the GLIAC. Ashland will play this weekend at home against Northwood and Wayne State.

Ferris State- Ferris State's 20.5 total team blocks against Northern Michigan (9/19) represents the 10th highest single-match output in the program's history, eclipsing the 19.5 total team blocks versus Michigan Tech in the 2001 season (9/15)...Sophomore defensive specialist Dana Ruttle (Reed City) has presently compiled double-digit digs in three of her last four matches and is averaging 9.25 digs (37 total) during that span...A pair of middle hitters, junior Kristy Gilchrist (Macomb/Anchor Bay) and sophomore Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids/Central) each totaled a season-high 10 block assists in a home conference match against Northern Michigan (9/19). The total was one shy of matching Gilchrist's career-high 11 block assists versus Hillsdale last season (10/12) while marking a career best for Goodson, who had seven block assists against Lake Superior State a season ago (9/14)...Ferris State is averaging 11.8 kills per set (319 total) in its seven home matches this season compared to the opposition's 9.1 kills per set (246 total). The Bulldogs have also produced 49 service aces (1.8 aps.) to their opponent's 22 aces (0.8 aps.) in home encounters this campaign.

Findlay- The University of Findlay dived into conference play with 3 matches against tough conference opponents. Findlay started off with a 3 set loss to travel Hillsdale in a match that featured stellar hitting performances from both teams. Findlay then proceeded to go on the road to face Wayne State and Northwood; both matches had very exciting play from both teams, however UF lost both matches in 4. Findlay returns to a regular schedule with conference opponents Northern Michigan, and Michigan Tech coming to Croy gym this weekend.

Grand Valley State- The Lakers completed a 3-0 week against GLIAC North Division foes, with all three wins coming at GVSU Fieldhouse Arena, to push their win streak to nine matches...Grand Valley State had two five-set matches over the weekend, with wins over Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan. In the win over the Wildcats, NMU won the first two sets before the Lakers rebounded to take the final three sets for the victory. Grand Valley State is 3-1 in five-set contests...The Laker defense averaged 15.85 digs per set and tallied 28 total team blocks for the week...junior Whitney Tremain (Kentwood, Mich./Michigan State) led Grand Valley State in hitting percentage (.265) and total blocks (18) and block assists (16)...the Lakers had five players record at least 20 kills, paced by senior Danielle Alexander (Newport, Mich./Airport), who had a team-best 36 kills and added 10 total blocks...GVSU is on the road this week against Saginaw Valley State and Lake Superior State.

Hillsdale- The Hillsdale College volleyball team lost back-to-back matches for the first time this season over the weekend, at Northwood and Wayne State...Tuesday, Hillsdale completed its first sweep of Findlay on the road since 1998...Senior setter Stephanie Booms set season-highs for assists in back-to-back matches over the weekend, getting 47 then 58 assists against Northwood and Wayne State, respectively...She averaged 14.5 assists per set in the loss to Wayne State, also a season-high...Freshman Ashlee Crowder had a career-high 15 kills at Northwood Friday (9/19), and has 10 or more kills in 10 of 15 matches this season...For the first time this season, Hillsdale is coming into a week where it plays just two matches, and both will be at home, against Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech Friday night and Saturday night...Two wins this weekend would give head coach Chris Gravel 250 for his career.

Lake Superior State - LSSU, which is off to a 2-0 start on its home court, set several season highs last week, including team kills (48) and assists (42) during a 3-2 home victory over Tiffin. The Lakers also reached a season-high in team digs (62) during a 3-1 home win over Ashland. Junior Ali Jones (Fruitport, Mich.) totaled a season-high 15 service points against the Dragons, while senior setter Ashley Purvis (Lapeer, Mich.) had a season-high 31 assists during the same match. Freshman libero Brittany Newberry (Iron Mountain, Mich.) totaled a season-high 28 digs against Ashland, and junior middle hitter/outside hitter Sara Hess (Owosso, Mich.) had a season-high six blocks during a 3-0 loss at SVSU. 

Michigan Tech - Michigan Tech posted a 1-2 record this week. The Huskies fell at home to Northern Michigan, 3-1. Tech then hit the road for the first time in GLIAC play this season. The team dropped a tough five set match to No. 8 Grand Valley State before defeating Ferris State, 3-2. The win over Ferris State was the first for head coach Krista Mikesch. Tech has played strong defense this season, holding its opponents to a .119 hitting percentage, best in the league. The Huskies are also tops in the GLIAC this season in blocks with 2.85 per set. Senior Jen Jung ranks second in blocks (1.39 per set) and third in hitting percentage (.368).

Northern Michigan- The Northern Michigan University women's volleyball team is 2-1 after three matches into a five-match road swing...Last week the Wildcats defeated Michigan Tech and Ferris State before dropping its match at Grand Valley State on Saturday...This week the team will travel to GLIAC South territory to take on Hillsdale and Findlay...Mandie Meyer had 42 kills last week. She recorded 15 against MTU, 14 at FSU, and 13 at GVSU...Meyer was also active on the defensive front as she had 12 digs at MTU, 11 at FSU, and 16 at GVSU...Meyer currently leads the ‘Cats with 185 kills...Caryn VanBeckum had both block solos at FSU and all three at GVSU. For the season, she leads the ‘Cats with 21 block solos and 44 total blocks...Emma Wolfe has a team-high 27 block assists...Cassie Osiecki led the ‘Cats in digs last week with 61 and currently has a team-leading 239 digs...Rachel Green is averaging over nine assists a set over the past five matches as she currently has 192 on the season.

Northwood- Northwood went 2-1 last week, earning wins over No. 19 Hillsdale and Findlay after falling at Wayne State ... the Timberwolves are now 6-7 overall, 3-2 in the GLIAC and are now in a three-way tie for first in the GLIAC South Division with the Chargers and the Warriors ... NU has gone 5-2 over its last seven matches ... Ivana Stanojevic (Jagodina, Serbia) had her best week of the season ... she hit .358 while averaging 2.17 kills per game ... Stanojevic was the key player in the Timberwolves' win over Hillsdale, finishing with 14 kills and a .407 attack percentage ... freshman Sara Skornia (Bay City, Mich./Central) averaged 1.0 blocks per game for the week ... she had her best match of the season against Findlay, totaling 11 kills and a .556 attack percentage ... she also had a career-high eight blocks against Hillsdale ... Northwood hits the road this week to take on Ashland and Tiffin.

Saginaw Valley State- Saginaw Valley State University won all three matches 3-0 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play against Lake Superior State University (9/16), Tiffin University (9/19), and Ashland University (9/20) to improve their record to 12-1. In their win over Lake Superior State, the Cardinals were led by Annie Buxton (Aurora, Ont.) with eight kills, while Sarah Redoute (Clinton Township, Mich.) and Jaclyn Carnago (St. Clair, Mich.) had seven kills and four blocks each. In SVSU's win over Tiffin, the Cardinals were led by Buxton with nine kills as well as Katie Fitzgerald (Whitby, Ont.) chipping in seven kills. In their win against Ashland, the Cardinals were led by the defensive play of Carnago, who contributed eight blocks, while Redoute added 10 kills on offense.

Tiffin - Tiffin's Beth Willenbrink was the top hitter for the week, averaging 2.17 kills per game...Dana Peterson had a triple double against Lake Superior State, totaling 11 kills, 26 assists, and 10 digs...Four players reached double figures in kills in the tough five-game loss to LSSU, with Brittany Teaford leading the way with 13 kills. Peterson had 11 kills as did Beth Willenbrink, while Brooke Bernabei had 10 kills...TU lost a four-game match at Ashland, taking the first game 25-18 before dropping the next three. Willenbrink was once again solid up front with 12 kills while Jess Adams had 29 assists.

Wayne State- Wayne State wrapped up its five-match homestand with three victories this week and moved into a tie with Hillsdale for first place in the South Division ... WSU defeated Northwood, 3-1, on Tuesday, snapping a 10-match losing streak against the Timberwolves dating back to 1998 ... Sarha Gosselin (Harrison Twp., Mich./Warren Lincoln) collected 13 kills and a team-high 14 digs ... the Warriors evened their conference record with a 3-1 triumph over Findlay on Friday ... Mayssa Bazzi (Dearborn, Mich.) had a season-high 23 digs in the match ... the squad made it three in a row with a 3-1 upset over 19th-ranked Hillsdale on Saturday ... the Warriors earned their first win against the Chargers since 2003 ... Lauren Mallast (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) guided the Warriors with 14 kills, a .440 hitting percentage and seven blocks ... as a team, WSU established season-highs in kills (52) and hitting percentage (.315).
