INAUGURAL 25-TEAM VOLLEYBALL EVENT TO BE HELD IN INDIANAPOLIS
INDIANAPOLIS - The women's volleyball teams from the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) will participate in a two-day crossover tournament in Indianapolis on Oct. 17-18. The GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament, sponsored by Asics, will feature 25 teams competing in 39 matches at Team Indiana and is believed to be the largest collegiate volleyball event in the country.
The event was designed to increase intra-conference competition between teams from the two leagues in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region.
"The Asics GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Volleyball Tournament supports the NCAA Division II Strategic Positioning Platform and embraces the regionalization philosophy at the conference level," stated GLVC Commissioner Jim Naumovich. "This is an exciting new intra-regional format which will enhance the visibility, exposure, and prestige for the volleyball programs from both conferences. We are most grateful for Asics sponsorship of this inaugural event as well as the support we have received from local hotels and restaurants to provide hospitality for the teams during their stay in Indianapolis."
The inaugural event will pit one GLVC team and one GLIAC team in each contest playing on seven courts with three sessions per day. The league coming away from the tournament with the most victories will receive the inaugural traveling trophy.
"Administering a tournament of this size and scope would not be possible if it were not for the tremendous assistance provided by representatives from both GLVC and GLIAC conference offices and member institutions," added Naumovich.
The GLVC is a 13-member league with members in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri and Wisconsin and is in its 31st year of combining athletic and academic success at the NCAA Division II level.
The GLIAC, founded in 1972, consists of 12 league members from Michigan and Ohio and has been a leader in the advancement and promotion of intercollegiate athletics for men and women for 37 years.
The two leagues feature strong volleyball programs and currently have four teams ranked in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll. Grand Valley State University is ranked ninth, Lewis University is 18th, the University of Indianapolis is 22nd and Northern Kentucky University is 25th.
General admission tickets for the 2008 Asics GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament will be available on the days of the event at Team Indiana located at 2570 N. Shadeland Ave. Single-day admission price is $10 for adults and $5 for students. Children five and under will be admitted free.
