UF's Charnigo and NU's Cameron Chosen As GLIAC Women's Outdoor Track and Field "Athletes of the Week," Respectively

BAY CITY, Mich. - University of Findlay senior Stephanie Charnigo (Medina, Ohio/Buckeye) and Northwood University sophomore Kristin Cameron (Algonac, Mich.) were named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) women's outdoor track and field "Athletes of the Week," respectively.

Medina, Ohio/Buckeye

Senior Stephanie Charnigo led the Oilers at the Jesse Owens Classic as she shattered her own school record with a time of 4:30.58 in the 1,500-meter run, a NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time. She also finished sixth in the 800-meter run with a provisional qualifying time of 2:10.34.

 

 

GLIAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week:
Kristin Cameron - Northwood
Sophomore, Throws
Algonac, Mich.

Kristin Cameron set a school record and recorded an automatic NCAA qualifying mark in the hammer throw at the Northwood Invite Friday afternoon.  Her toss of 181-7 ranks her sixth nationally in the event.  The mark also broke her own school record by seven feet.  Cameron was an All-American in the weight throw during the 2010 indoor season.

Ashland Eagles

The Eagles were well represented at this year’s Jesse Owens Classic, which was held Friday and Saturday, Apr. 30-May 1.  The Eagles did not go home without some hardware.  In the women’s 400, speedster Steph Tinney was seventh in 55.07.  First place went to Penn State’s Fawn Durr. She completed the race in 52.73.  In the women’s high jump, Abby Kacsandi was 14th (5-3).  Kelly Ash was 14th in the shot put (46-11).  With only a couple of weeks left in the season, the Eagles have four automatic qualifiers for the NCAA championships and 11 provisional qualifiers.  On the automatic side, Tinney has one in the 400, Ash has one in the shot put, Kacsandi has one in the high jump and Tara Cooper has one in the hammer throw.  Ashland competes this week at the GLIAC Championships at Ferris State.

 

Ferris State Bulldogs

The Ferris State University women’s outdoor track and field team held its final tune-up for the 2010 GLAIC Championships by taking part in the Northwood Invitational on Friday (April 30) in Midland, Mich. Freshman Zoey Holmann won the 400 meters (58.34), junior Paige Onweller claimed the 1,500 meters (5:12.71) and senior Emily Cross took first place in the 100-meter hurdles (15.10). Cross also won the high jump (5-4.25) while sophomore Jessica Schewe claimed the pole vault (10-4). Freshman Anna Rudd emerged victorious in the 3,000 meters (10:30.59) where the Bulldogs had five of the top six finishers.  Junior Sarah Creed came in third (10:55.31), senior Megan Josey was fourth (10:57.63), freshman Felicia Peacock wound up fifth (11:07.62) with freshman Jordan McGuire placing sixth (11:08.59) for FSU. Sophomore Andrea Fogle took second place in the discus (129-0), junior Amy Joostberns was third in the discus (127-3) and senior Sarah Thomas came in eighth overall in the long jump (13-2). FSU will host the GLIAC Championships this Wednesday to Friday, May 5-7, at Top Taggart Field.

 

 

Findlay Oilers

Stephanie Charnigo led the Oilers at the Jesse Owens Classic by shattering her own school record with a time of 4:30.58 in the 1,500-meter run, a NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time. She also finished sixth in the 800-meter run with a provisional qualifying time of 2:10.34 while Raven Clay placed eighth in the 100-meter hurdles after crossing the finish line in a NCAA Division II automatic qualifying time of 13.66. Erin Calvelage was 15th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase after crossing the finish line in a provisional qualifying time of 11:08.40. Clay also took 20th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.17 while Christine Zimmermann finished 20th in the 800-meter at 2:15.15.

 

Grand Valley State Lakers

The Lakers competed at the Illinois Twilight on Friday, April 30 and had four athletes hit the provisional marks. In the 400-meter hurdles, Danielle Fonseca (Barrie, Ont.) crossed the finish line fourth (1:01.66), while Kirsten Nozime (Lake Villa, Ill.) placed sixth with a provisional time of 1:01.94. Chanelle Caldwell (Toledo, Ohio) also hit the provisional mark in the 400-meter dash(56.30). The 4x400-meter relay team of Caldwell, Kayla Vallar (Marshall, Mich.), Leiah Hess (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview) and Candice Wheat (Pontiac, Mich./Northern), took home first place with an automatic time of 2:43.99. The 4x100-meter relay team of Vallar, Wheat, Jade Hull (Grandville, Mich.) and Amber Triner (Winfield, Ill.) finished fifth with a provisional time of 47.30 seconds. In the field events, Jocelyn Kuksa (Palatine, Ill.) provisionally qualified for nationals in the pole vault with a first place with a vault of 12’5.5". In the discus, Melanie Huhn (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bisho Luers) hit the provisional mark for the first time this season. Huhn placed second with a throw of 149’3". Liz Murphy (Washington, Mich./Romeo) placed second in the hammer throw with a toss of 173’11".

 

 

Hillsdale Chargers

The Chargers will be back in action again May 5th, 6th, and 7th as they travel to Big Rapids, Michigan to compete in the Outdoor Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference Championships.

 

 

Lake Superior State Lakers

Junior Taylor Patton (Northwood, Ohio) was the Lakers’ lone female winner at the five-team Northwood Invitational held April 30. She placed first in the triple jump with a leap of 10.47 meters. Teammate Katie Winiarski (sophomore, Brighton, Mich.) was third at 10.24 meters. Third-place awards went to Winiarski in the high jump and junior Kimberlee Booms (Harrison, Mich.) in the hammer throw.

 

 

Michigan Tech Huskies

The Huskies were idle this week and compete next in a GLIAC Championships at Ferris State May 5-7.

 

 

Northern Michigan Wildcats

The Northern Michigan University women’s outdoor track and field team has its final tune-up before the GLIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday at the Northwood Invite. School records were set by Catherine Angeli in the 100-meter dash (12.42) and the 4x100 relay of Alyssa Erspamer, Brittnee Balbierz, Melissa Christensen and Angeli (48.76). Angeli and Balbierz (12.54) went one-two in the 100. Brooke Granquist won the 400 hurdles at Northwood with a time of 1:11.35. 

 

 

Northwood Timberwolves

The Northwood University women’s track and field teams hosted their final home event of the 2010 season Friday afternoon (April 30), taking part in the Northwood Invite, no team scoring was taken in the event, which was held at the Fisher Track. Alma, Ferris State, Lake Superior State and Northern Michigan all took part in the event. The highlight of the day came from Kristin Cameron (Algonac, Mich.), who posted an automatic NCAA Qualifying mark in the hammer throw, her toss of 181-7 is a new school record and currently ranks as the sixth-best throw nationally in the event this season. She also earned the win in the discus with mark of 133-9. The rest of the team also added two more victories on the evening. Hannah Stone (Lapeer, Mich./East), who posted a win in the 800 with a time of 2:17.65. Amanda Watson (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) was the winner of the long jump, going for a personal-best mark of 17-2.25. Northwood will compete at the GLIAC Championships May 5-7.

 

Saginaw Valley State Cardinals

The Saginaw Valley State University women’s track and field team was idle this past week. The Cardinals will be back in action again May 5th, 6th, and 7th as they travel to Big Rapids, Michigan to compete in the Outdoor Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference Championships.

 

 

Tiffin Dragons

Tiffin University competed last weekend at the Toledo Invitational. Meghan Gill was the top placer, taking 3rd in the high jump with 5-6.5. Emily Kellepourey was 4th in the javelin with 108-1, while Brittaney Rupert was 4th in the 400 hurdles in 1:10.59. Other top performers were Kayla Ellks (7th in long jump), Cara Roach (6th in discus), and Amanda Tooley (5th in hammer with 153-6).
