MIDLAND, Mich. - Northwood University defeated Wayne State University, 5-2, in the championship match of the 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) women's tennis tournament on Sunday (Oct. 27) at the Midland Community Tennis Center.
Northwood, which claimed the GLIAC Championship earlier this season by having the best regular season record, posted wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles and jumped out to a 2-1 lead. The Timberwolves would get victories at No. 1 singles from Darina Berkova, at No. 2 singles from Nastya Puchkina, at No. 4 singles from Inesa Asatryan, and at No. 6 singles from Margarita Asatryan.
Northwood was the No. 1 seed in the tournament, while Wayne State was the No. 2 seed. Wayne State picked up its lone singles victory at No. 6 from Ann Li Briand, while picking up a doubles win at No. 2 from the team of Alex Poissant and Anastasia Burobina.
In the third place match, No. 4 seed team Grand Valley State University, defeated the No. 3 seed, Tiffin University, 5-2.
In the fifth place match, the No. 5 seed, Walsh University, defeated No. 6 Hillsdale College, 5-4.
In the seventh place match, No. 8 Ferris State University defeated No. 7 Ashland University, 5-0.
