Northwood Claims 2011 GLIAC Women's Tennis Tounament Title with 5-2 Win over Grand Valley State
MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University women’s tennis team earned the GLIAC Tournament title Sunday afternoon (October 23) with a 5-2 win over Grand Valley State at the Midland Community Tennis Center.
The key to the match was Northwood’s doubles play, as the Timberwolves came out and swept the three matches. Northwood, the tournament's No. 1 seed, improved to 41-1 in doubles in dual matches this season.
Third-seeded GVSU came out strong in singles, earning the first two wins to cut the NU lead to 3-2. But Northwood bounced right back, winning at the No. 2 and No. 5 positions to claim the title.
In the tourament's Third-place match, No. 2 seed Wayne State University defeated No. 4 Ashland University, 6-0. Ferris State Univeristy (No. 5) took the Fifth-place match over sixth-seeded Lake Superior State University, 5-0. An in the most exciting match of the day, No. 8 Saginaw Valley State University posted a 5-4 come-from-behind win over No. 7 Ohio Dominican University in the Seventh-place match.
