GVSU Downs Northwood, 5-1, in 2010 GLIAC Women's Tennis Tournament Final
MIDLAND, Mich. - Grand Valley State University followed up its 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship by claiming the league's 2010 Tournament title as well on Sunday (Oct. 24). The Lakers defeated Northwood University, 5-1, in the Tournament final held at the Midland Community Tennis Center.

GVSU picked up two wins in the doubles competition as the No. 1 duo of Darylann Trout and Chelsea Johnston won 8-1 and the No. 3 pair of Lexi Rice and Jackie Shipman claimed the victory 8-2. In singles competition Niki Shipman won 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot, while Trout won at No. 5 singles (6-4, 6-1) and Katelyn Schaffer at No. 6 (6-4, 6-3).
Northwood's only victory in the match came at the the No. 2 doubles position where the team of Charlotte Sevin and Anne-Sophie Goujet took an 8-3 decision.
By virtue of winning the 2010 GLIAC Tournament title, GVSU earned an automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship to be held on the Spring of 2011.
In the tournament's consolation matches, Ferris State University defeated Wayne State University, 5-1, [Boxscore] in the third-place match on Sunday. No. 5 seed Ashland University downed No. 6 seed Michigan Technological University, 5-3, [Boxscore] in the fifth-place match, while No. 7 Saginaw Valley State University triumphed over No. 8 Lake Superior State University in the seventh-place match, 5-1 [Boxscore].
