UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University athletic department and Athletics Director Mike Watson have announced the hiring of former SVSU student-athlete Jenn Boehm as the head coach of the Cardinal women's tennis program. Boehm comes to SVSU from the Midland Community Tennis Center, where she has directed several different programs since 2005.
"The search committee and I thought that an ideal candidate for this position would be someone with great leadership skills, be very well organized and have short and long term goals on how to move the tennis program here at SVSU to the next level. We found all of those qualities and more in SVSU tennis alum Jenn Boehm, as she blew the committee away with her skills and plan to make SVSU tennis a top-tier Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) program", stated SVSU Athletics Director Mike Watson.
Most recently, Boehm serves as the Director of Leagues at the Midland Community Tennis Center, where she is responsible for the overall success of approximately 25 leagues and over 250 participants in each quarterly session. She recruits and retains players of all skill levels to maximize participation and creates online schedules, rotations, standings and registration forms to help keep the leagues organized.
Aside from those responsibilities, Boehm serves as the Director of Cardio Tennis at the Tennis Center. She heavily promotes the benefits of on-court cardio fitness and aides in the retention of those benefits through dynamic coaching and appropriate challenges for any level of player. Included in this task, she also trains fellow tennis professionals to lead similar classes.
Boehm also serves as the Director of Middle School Tennis, where she oversees 14 hours per week of instruction for beginner and intermediate level players. She introduces tennis into gym classes and trains physical education teachers in an effort to revive intramural programs in the Midland area.
Another one of Boehm's tasks at the Tennis Center is serving as the Patrons' Lounge Coordinator of the area's most premiere professional tennis event, the Dow Corning Tennis Classic. She coordinates the gourmet dining experience for 5,000 sponsors and guests during the week long tournament. Included in these duties are recruiting, training, scheduling and supervising 50 volunteers for the event.
She also served as the Girls' 18's Junior Wightman Cup Head Coach at Ball State University, where she coached and traveled with the top seven girls from the Northeast Michigan Tennis Association, who competed against other USTA Midwest districts. Boehm was responsible for the transportation and supervision of all players.
Boehm played four years of women's tennis at Saginaw Valley State University, graduating in 2003 with a Bachelor's of Business Administration degree. She served as an assistant coach in the Fall of 2003 for the Cardinal women's tennis program as well.
