Grand Valley State's Darylann Trout Named GLIAC Women's Tennis "Athlete of the Week"

BAY CITY, Mich. - Grand Valley State University junior Darylann trout (Clarkston, Mich.) earned GLIAC Women's Tennis "Athlete of the Week" honors after leading the Lakers to three GLIAC road wins last week.

GLIAC Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week:

Trout went 6-0 last weekend, going 3-0 in both singles and doubles. At #1 doubles, Trout teamed up with Chelsea Johnston to win a critical match against Ashland, 9-7. The tandem only dropped 4 games combined in the other two matches. In singles play, Darylann went 3-0 and lost a combined 6 games in her 3 matches. She played #4 singles against Saginaw winning 6-1, 6-2. Then against Ashland she moved up and played #3 singles and won 6-2, 6-1. Against Tiffin, she again played #3 singles and cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Her regular season conference record is 9-1 in singles, while posting an 8-2 mark in conference play at #1 doubles.

 

Ashland Eagles (6-5, 5-4 GLIAC)

The Eagles went 1-1 for the third consecutive week. Ashland has a 6-5 record overall and a 5-4 record in the GLIAC. AU finished the regular season finishing in fifth place in the GLIAC. The Eagles defeated Ferris State on Friday (Oct. 16) 6-3 and lost to Grand Valley State on Saturday (Oct. 17), 6-3. As the fifth seed, the Eagles will take on the fourth seeded Wayne State. The Warriors earned the victory in the match between the two schools earlier this season. AU finished fourth in the GLIAC Championship last season. They have made the end of the season tournament the past two seasons.

 

Ferris State Bulldogs (5-4, 5-4 GLIAC)

 

The Ferris State University women’s tennis team split two league road matches this past weekend (Oct. 16-17) in Ohio. The two matches were the Bulldogs’ final ones prior to the GLIAC Tournament this weekend (Oct. 24-25) in Lansing, Mich...FSU suffered a 6-3 setback Friday (Oct. 16) at Ashland, but rebounded to post a 9-0 triumph on Saturday (Oct. 17) at Tiffin... The Bulldogs made quick work of the Dragons in Saturday’s match as TU did not field a full lineup. The Bulldogs utilized six different players in the match despite the fact they picked up forfeit wins at third doubles and the bottom two singles flights... Ashland swept the doubles round and the two teams split the six singles spots in Friday’s loss.

 

Findlay Oilers (2-9, 2-6 GLIAC)

The University of Findlay women’s tennis team fell 6-3 to Lake Superior State University on Saturday, October 10 in Findlay, Ohio to run their record to 2-9 on the season with a 2-6 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The University of Findlay women’s tennis team fell 7-2 at home to Michigan Technological University on Friday, October 9. The loss gives the Oilers a 2-8 record on the season with a 2-5 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

 

Grand Valley State Lakers (7-2, 7-2 GLIAC)

 

This past weekend the Grand Valley women’s tennis team went 3-0 in conference play. GV defeated Saginaw Valley 8-1 on Friday, with the lone defeat coming in a 3rd set tiebreaker at #1 singles. On Saturday, GV traveled to Ashland for a crucial match up. GV defeated Ashland 6-3, sweeping the doubles and splitting the singles play. From Ashland, GV traveled to Sandusky, OH to play Tiffin University. GV defeated Tiffin 9-0, and that win clinched the #2 seed in the GLIAC tournament. Grand Valley has only the upcoming GLIAC tournament on their schedule for the rest of the fall.

 

Michigan Tech Huskies (7-2, 7-2 GLIAC)

Michigan Tech finished its 2009 fall regular season schedule with a 7-2 record to tie for second in the GLIAC standings. It’s the highest GLIAC finish for the women’s tennis team in the program’s 33 seasons. Tech will travel to Midland, Mich., for the GLIAC Tournament Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 24-25). The Huskies are perfect at both No. 2 singles (Ploy Suthijindawong) and No. 2 doubles (Asel Otunchieva and Victoria Zhilkina) in GLIAC play this season.

 

 

Lake Superior State Lakers (5-6, 3-6 GLIAC)

JSenior Katie Watchorn (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) won No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-4, and No. 3 doubles with junior Anais Molina-Rodriguez (Pueblo Libre, Lima, Peru), 8-6. LSSU’s only other winner for the match was sophomore Erin Wiethoff (Escanaba, Mich.) at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-4. LSSU is 5-6 overall and 3-6 in conference play.

 

 

Northwood Timberwolves (8-0, 8-0 GLIAC)

The Northwood University women's tennis team moved to 8-0 on the season with a 9-0 victory over Tiffin Saturday morning (October 10)... The Timberwolves are now 8-0 in the GLIAC as well. Tiffin falls to 0-11, 0-7 in the GLIAC... With the win, Northwood clinches the GLIAC regular season title. NU holds a two-game lead over three schools with the Timberwolves having only one more conference match remaining. Northwood will be the No. 1 seed at the GLIAC Tournament, which takes place in Lansing October 24-25... Northwood opened the match by winning the top two doubles matches 8-1 and earning the win at the No. 3 position by forfeit. NU then went on to win the top five singles matches all by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores... Northwood's next action features senior Darina Berkova (Ceske Budejovic, Czech Republic) traveling to the Wilson/ITA Small College Championships October 15-18. The final regular season team match of the fall is home against Findlay October 21.

 

Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (1-8, 1-8 GLIAC)

The Saginaw Valley State University women’s tennis team fell Friday (Oct. 16) to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rivals Grand Valley State University, 8-1... Saginaw Valley’s Yunjiao Shangguan would score the Cardinals only point in the match defeating Grand Valley’s Tara Hayes 6-4, 7-6, and 10-6 respectively... With the loss the Cards fall to 1-8 on the season and 1-8 in the GLIAC while Grand Valley improves to 5-2 overall and 5-2 in GLIAC play.

 

Tiffin Dragons (0-13, 0-9 GLIAC)

Tiffin fell in another GLIAC contest to Ferris State 9-0. Teauana Long lost the closest match at first singles 4-6, 1-6, while the Dragons won a total of 3 games in five other matches….Tiffin dropped a 9-0 decision to visiting Grand Valley State. The closest match was at first singles where Teauana Long fell 3-6, 4-6. The Dragons struggled in the other matches, winning just 3 games in five other matches.

 

Wayne State Warriors (7-3, 6-3 GLIAC)

The Wayne State women’s tennis team did not compete this past week, but a pair of Warriors did represent WSU at the ITA Small College National Championships in Mobile, Ala. Sharon Gill and Milena Vuksanovic became the first team in Wayne State history to win a match at the Championships after posting a record of 1-2 and finishing in seventh place in the Division II bracket. Gill and Vuksanovic defeated Kate Lowder/Victoria Sargent of Mesa State 6-4, 6-2 in a consolation match after losing to Abilene Christian’s Jaclyn Walker/Dina Pavlin 7-5, 6-4 and Concordia’s Ola Roberts/Cristina Oliveira 6-2, 6-3. Wayne State will be back in action this week at the GLIAC Tournament (Oct. 24-25).
