Ferris State's Amy Ingle Named GLIAC Women's Tennis "Athlete of the Week"

BAY CITY, Mich. - Ferris State University junior Amy Ingle (Battle Creek, Mich./Hastings) earned GLIAC Women's Tennis "Athlete of the Week" honors after leading the Bulldogs to an upset of No. 27 Grand Valley State University last week.

Ferris State University junior Amy Ingle keyed the Bulldogs’ thrilling 5-4 league home victory over West Michigan rival Grand Valley State on Friday (Oct. 9) by winning both of her matches at the top flights in the lineup. The 5-4 Ingle teamed up with junior Tiffany Rheynard for a 8-4 doubles triumph over the Lakers’ combination of Darylann Trout and Chelsea Johnston at the number one spot. She then defeated Tara Hayes 6-7 (6-7), 6-0, 6-0 in singles play at the top flight. Her efforts helped the Bulldogs snap a five-match series’ losing streak to the Lakers. Ingle owns a 4-3 overall singles mark and is 5-2 in doubles play to date this campaign.
Ashland Eagles (5-4, 4-3 GLIAC)
Ashland went 1-1 this past week. They have a record of 5-4 overall and are 4-3 in the GLIAC. In the conference, AU currently sits in a tie for fifth place. Ashland traveled to Northwood on Friday (Oct. 9), the top team in the GLIAC, and lost, 9-0. The Eagles bounced back on Saturday (Oct. 10) with an 8-1 victory at Saginaw Valley State. Junior Alexandra Ware continues to fare well for the Eagles. In sixth singles, she holds a 5-3 record and in second doubles with her partner, junior Corinne Pasley, they are 4-3. Ashland hosts Ferris State on Friday (Oct. 16) at 3 p.m., and hosts Grand Valley State on Saturday (Oct. 17) at 10 a.m.
Ferris State Bulldogs (4-3, 4-3 GLIAC)
The Ferris State University women’s tennis team pulled out a thrilling 5-4 GLIAC victory over West Michigan rival Grand Valley State on Friday (Oct. 9) afternoon inside the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich. The Bulldogs took an early 2-1 lead with a pair of wins in the doubles round and then split the six singles flights to grab the victory... Junior Amy Ingle and sophomore Melissa Flowers were both double winners on the day... The Bulldog win snapped a five-match Laker winning streak in the all-time series’ and FSU improved to 4-3 both overall and in league play with the triumph...The Bulldogs are next scheduled to visit Ashland on Friday, Oct. 16, for a 3 p.m. (EDT) league encounter in Ashland, Ohio. FSU then takes on Tiffin on Saturday, Oct. 17, for an 11 a.m. (EDT) league tilt in Tiffin, Ohio. The two matches are the Bulldogs’ final ones prior to the GLIAC Tournament on Oct. 24-25 in Lansing, Mich.
Findlay Oilers (2-9, 2-6 GLIAC)
The University of Findlay women’s tennis team fell 6-3 to Lake Superior State University on Saturday, October 10 in Findlay, Ohio to run their record to 2-9 on the season with a 2-6 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The University of Findlay women’s tennis team fell 7-2 at home to Michigan Technological University on Friday, October 9. The loss gives the Oilers a 2-8 record on the season with a 2-5 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).
Grand Valley State Lakers (4-2, 4-2 GLIAC)
This past week Grand Valley State dropped two conference decisions, losing to Northwood 8-1 and Ferris State 5-4. Against Northwood our lone victory came at #3 singles as Chelsea Johnston won 6-3, 3-6, 10-5. In the Ferris State match, GV lost 2 out of 3 doubles with our win coming at #2 doubles. GV then split the singles winning at 2, 3, and 4. This upcoming week Grand Valley will conclude it’s regular season play with a 3-match road trip. On Friday, GV will be traveling to Saginaw for a dual match starting at 2:00 p.m. from there we will be traveling to Ashland for a 10:00 a.m. start on Saturday. Sunday GV will travel to Tiffin to conclude its regular season, and that match is scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m.
Michigan Tech Huskies (6-2, 6-2 GLIAC)
Michigan Tech swept its two matches last weekend to move into second place in the GLIAC standings. After starting the year 1-2, the Huskies have reeled off five straight matches to improve to 6-2. Tech is undefeated still at two of its individual positions. Sophomore Ploy Suthijindawong is 7-0 at No. 2 singles. At No. 2 doubles, Asel Otunchieva and Victoria Zhilkina are also 7-0.
Lake Superior State Lakers (4-5, 3-5 GLIAC)
Junior Ingrid Pflieger (Grossaitingen, Germany) went 3-0 at No. 2 singles. Pflieger, 4-6, 6-4, (10-5), was the only LSSU victory at Friday’s match against Wayne State. Pflieger defeated Findlay, 6-1, 6-2, and Davenport, 6-7 (1-7), 6-2, (10-3), in a third-set tiebreaker. Pflieger and sophomore Erin Wiethoff (Escanaba, Mich.) were 2-1, losing to Wayne State at No. 2 doubles. Pflieger and Wiethoff defeated Findlay, 8-4, and Davenport, 8-6. Pflieger and Wiethoff have LSSU’s best overall doubles record, 3-2.
Northwood Timberwolves (8-0, 8-0 GLIAC)
The Northwood University women's tennis team moved to 8-0 on the season with a 9-0 victory over Tiffin Saturday morning (October 10)... The Timberwolves are now 8-0 in the GLIAC as well. Tiffin falls to 0-11, 0-7 in the GLIAC... With the win, Northwood clinches the GLIAC regular season title. NU holds a two-game lead over three schools with the Timberwolves having only one more conference match remaining. Northwood will be the No. 1 seed at the GLIAC Tournament, which takes place in Lansing October 24-25... Northwood opened the match by winning the top two doubles matches 8-1 and earning the win at the No. 3 position by forfeit. NU then went on to win the top five singles matches all by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores... Northwood's next action features senior Darina Berkova (Ceske Budejovic, Czech Republic) traveling to the Wilson/ITA Small College Championships October 15-18. The final regular season team match of the fall is home against Findlay October 21.
Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (1-7, 1-7 GLIAC)
The Saginaw Valley State University women’s tennis team split a pair of matches this past weekend, including its first victory of the season Friday, an 8-1 victory over Tiffin University. The Cardinals would then lose to Ashland University on Saturday by the same 8-1 score. Against Ashland, the lone Cardinal victory came at No. 1 singles, where Yunjiao Shangguan defeated AU’s Torrie Goudy by scores of 7-6, 6-2. SVSU’s record stands at 1-7 overall on the season with an indentical mark in GLIAC play. The Cardinals will play their final match of the fall season when they host Grand Valley State University Friday (Oct. 16) in a 2:00 pm match.
Tiffin Dragons (0-11, 0-7 GLIAC)
Tiffin got its lone win from Renee Mattson/Teauana Long at second doubles as they won 8-5, but could muster nothing more in an 8-1 loss to Saginaw Valley State. Jessie Stefanov fell at second singles 5-7, 2-6, while Taylor Cooper fell 3-6, 4-6. Stefanov/Cooper also fell in doubles play 4-8…Tiffin couldn’t handle Northwood on the road, falling 9-0. TU won a total of 2 games in 7 matches. They won one game apiece at first and second doubles. The singles matches were all 6-0, 6-0 scores.
Wayne State Warriors (7-3, 6-3 GLIAC)
The Wayne State women’s tennis team split its final two home matches of the fall this past week as the Warriors were able to defeat Lake Superior State 8-1 on Friday before losing 5-4 to Michigan Tech on Saturday. Jennifer Bradford and Debora Correa both had a perfect weekend for WSU. The duo teamed up for a 2-0 record in No. 3 doubles while also producing perfect 2-0 marks in singles play; Against Lake Superior State Kristina Goranskaya, McCall Monte, Correa, Bradford and Meghan Luzod all picked up wins in singles play with the teams of Sharon Gill/Milena Vuksanovic, Monte/ Goranskaya and Bradford/Correa doing the same on WSU’s path to the 8-1 win. However, Michigan Tech would prove to be a tougher match as the Warriors only managed to grab four points thanks to Monte, Correa and Bradford in singles play and the aforementioned No. 3 doubles team of Bradford/Correa. Wayne State is idle this week.
