BAY CITY, Mich. - Northwood University junior forward Amanda Watson (Oregon, Ohio) earned GLIAC Women's Soccer "Athlete of the Week" honors after leading Northwood to a pair of victories last week, scoring four goals while adding an assist.

Junior Amanda Watson led Northwood to
a pair of victories last week, scoring four goals while adding an
assist. She netted both goals in a 2-0 victory over Michigan
Tech Friday afternoon. Watson then had a hand in three of
four goals in a 4-1 victory over Northern Michigan. She
assisted the opening tally before scoring the next two goals.
For the season, she leads the GLIAC in goals (15), goals per game
(1.0), points (35) and points per game (2.33).

Ashland Eagles
The Eagles went 1-1 on the weekend, falling to Ohio Dominican on Friday, 3-0, before earning a hard-fought 2-1 home win on Sunday over Urbana. The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in Sunday’s game on a goal by senior Ashley Dragos in the 57th minute. Urbana answered with the equalizer in the 78th minute, but the Eagles bore down and got the game-winner in the 82nd minute. Freshman Tani Lopez took a pass from senior Alicia VanZanten and scored into the right side. VanZanten assisted on both goals. The Eagles finish their regular season schedule this weekend with home games against Tiffin on Friday and Findlay on Sunday.
Ferris State Bulldogs
Freshman forward Emily Kraska has compiled a combined three points in her last two outings after tallying a goal at Findlay last Friday (Oct. 22) and then picking up an assist in Sunday’s (Oct. 24) contest at Tiffin. Kraska’s six points (2-2=6) in 17 matches this season presently ranks tied for the third highest on the squad. The Bulldogs have posted a 2-3-2 record (.500) in away matches this fall and are averaging 1.19 goals per contest while allowing the identical average in a road encounter. Freshman goalkeeper Rachel McCollum has a 2-3-2 mark with a 1.19 goals-against average (nine goals allowed) and an .852 saves percentage (52 total saves) in 680 minutes of action. Ferris State is 2-8-1 (.227) in regular-season finale contests and hasn’t posted a win since the 2002 campaign (Nov. 9) when the Bulldogs recorded a 1-0 home triumph versus Grand Valley State under the lights. FSU sports a 2-6 mark (.250) in such encounters against Grand Valley State. Ferris will face Grand Valley State on Saturday (Oct. 30) at Gramd Valley.
Findlay
Oilers
The University of Findlay
women’s soccer team split a pair of conference games last
week, winning 3-1 against Ferris State on Friday at home and losing
3-1 to #3 Grand Valley State University on Sunday at DeHaven
Field. In the win over the Bulldogs, senior Amanda Bachmayer,
senior Rosie Paris and sophomore Emily Beddoes each scored
goals. In the loss to the Lakers, senior Sara Jones scored
the Oilers lone goal. She currently leads the team with five
goals on the year.
Grand Valley State Lakers
Grand Valley State notched a 1-0-1
record over the weekend as the Lakers tied with Tiffin on Friday
(1-1) and defeated Findlay on Sunday (3-1). The #3 ranked
division II team advanced its record to 14-1-2 overall and 11-1-2
in GLIAC action…In the tie with Tiffin, junior Erin Mruz
(Gurnee, Ill.) scored the lone goal for Grand Valley State, as
senior Kristen Eible (DeWitt, Mich.) notched the assist. The
Lakers outshot the Dragons by a 6-2 advantage during the two
overtime periods, but were unable to find the back of the
net. GVSU recorded three goals in the last five minutes to
claim the victory against Findlay. Sophomore Kayla Addison
(Southfield, Mich.) recorded two goals and an assist for a total of
five points in the win, while Jaleen Dingledine (Newaygo, Mich.)
notched a goal and an assists and Mruz recorded two assists.
The tough Laker backline held the Oilers to just five shots,
including two shots on goal. Grand Valley State outshot its
opponents by a 43-14 advantage in shots, including an 18-5 margin
in shots on goal. Addison leads GVSU in goals (14) and points
(34), while Dingledine and Mruz are tied for the top spot with 10
assists. The Lakers will host their final regular season
match on Saturday (Oct. 30) against GLIAC rival Ferris State at
12:00 p.m.
Lake Erie Storm
Lake Erie got its first GLIAC win on Sunday with a 2-1 upset of Ohio Dominican. With the game tied at 1-1 in the 86th minute, sophomore forward Kaitlyn “Skeeter” Holland’s (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) shot from 35 yards out fell just over the outstretched hand of ODU goalkeeper and into the top of the net. Earlier in the half, Holland picked up the game tying assist as a beautiful cross found the foot of freshman Misty Porter (Reno, Nev./North Valleys). Lake Erie was led by a strong performance by freshman goalkeeper Megan Baldacci (Cavecreek, Ariz./Cactus Shadows). Baldacci made 17 saves in the game, some spectacular second half saves to allow Lake Erie the chance to make its late rally. In a loss to Seton Hill earlier in the week, Porter scored in the 82nd minute. The Storm closes out their season with a pair of home GLIAC matches this weekend.
Michigan Tech Huskies
Michigan Tech will play the final
regular season game of its inaugural season Saturday at Northern
Michigan. Tech lost a pair of games last week at Northwood (2-0)
and at Saginaw Valley (1-0). Tech is the only team in the GLIAC who
has not played an overtime game. The Huskies have recorded only two
yellow cards this season, fewest in the league. Freshman Melanie
Hoffman continues to lead the GLIAC with five game-winning goals.
Freshman MaryBeth Spoehr ranks fourth in the league in saves (94)
and fifth in saves per game (5.88). She is also tied for fourth in
the league with five shutouts.
Northern Michigan Wildcats
The Northern Michigan University
soccer team concludes the regular season with a home match against
Michigan Tech Saturday (Oct. 30). Last week the Wildcats
snapped its winless streak with a 2-1 win at Saginaw Valley State,
the ‘Cats were 0-3-2 before the win. NMU lost at
Northwood also last week. Senior Kari Buckel and sophomore
Amelia Johnson scored goals against the Cardials. For Johnson
it was her third game-winning goal of the season which is a team
high and eighth overall. For Buckel it was her fourth goal of
the season. Brekelle Sellers scored NMU’s lone goal
against the Timberwolves as it was her first career goal.
Northwood Timberwolves
Northwood extended their winning
streak to four with a pair of victories last week, defeating
Michigan Tech 2-0 before downing Northern Michigan 4-1. NU
lost to both of those teams earlier this season. The
Timberwolves are now 7-9 overall, 5-9 in the GLIAC. Junior
forward Amanda Watson (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) continued her strong play
with a big week offensively. She was in on five of
Northwood’s six goals, scoring five while assisting on
one. Watson scored both goals in the victory over Michigan
Tech. She then scored two goals while assisting on another
against NMU. For the season, she leads the GLIAC in goals
(15), goals per game (1.0), points (35) and points per game
(2.33). NU took control of the Northern Michigan match early,
scoring three goals in the opening 5:08 of the contest. The
Timberwolves will travel to Urbana and Ohio Dominican this
week.
Ohio Dominican Panthers
The Panthers split their final two road games this past weekend,
defeating Ashland 3-0 on Friday afternoon, before succumbing to
Lake Erie 2-1 on Sunday. Jennifer Holton (So./Johnstown, OH)
recorded three scores over the weekend and became just the second
Panther to have a multi-goal game this season with her two goals in
Friday’s win over the Eagles. Keeper Aimee Simonet (Sr./New
Albany, OH) posted her seventh shutout of the season against
Ashland. All seven of her victories have come via a shutout. ODU
drops to five points behind South Division leader Tiffin and just
one point behind second place Findlay with two games remaining. The
women return home to conclude their season, hosting Saginaw Valley
State (Mich.) at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 29 and Northwood (Mich.) at
2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 31. Since ODU is its final year of
transitioning to NCAA Division II, the women cannot compete in the
conference tournament because the winner receives an automatic bid
to nationals.
Saginaw Valley State Cardinals
The Saginaw Valley women’s
soccer team split the weekend’s matches, falling to Northern
Mich (2-1) and defeating Michigan Tech (1-0) in its final regular
season home contests. Sophomore Charley Porter scored the only goal
for the Cardinals against Northern Michigan and senior Kaysie
Morand found the back of the net with just a little over four
minutes left in the contest against Michigan Tech for her second
game winning goal of the season. Saginaw Valley has a .500 shots on
goal percentage with 96 shots in the 2010 season. The Cardinals
will be back in action on Friday (Oct. 29) when they travel to Ohio
Dominican for their final regular season match-up.
Tiffin Dragons
The Dragons picked up a crucial
point in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play as
Tiffin battled to a 1-1 tie with 3rd-ranked Grand Valley State.
Tiffin’s senior goalie Denise Resende (7-3-2) held with seven
saves. Junior Lauren Turkington passed into the box and Jenna
Hornyak, senior, deflected the ball into the back of the net for
her sixth goal of the year. The Dragons picked a good day to
pull out a clutch, come-from-behind victory, thrilling the large
Senior Day crowd in beating Ferris State in a close GLIAC matchup
2-1 in overtime. The Dragons fell behind after a Bulldogs’
goal in the 35th minute, but the goal served as a wakeup call for
TU, as they scored one minute later to tie the score at 1-1 at the
half. Sophomore, Lauren Merriman took a corner kick from junior,
Shelly Rogers and drilled it home from 18 yards out for the goal.
TU scored quickly in overtime, with Lauren Turkington knocking home
a 15 yard shot off a touch pass from freshman Lauren Bowyer for the
gamewinner in the 95th minute. Overall the Dragons outshot Ferris
State 23-10 and had an 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Denise Resende got
the win in goal, making 5 saves in 95 minutes while allowing one
goal.
