Grand Valley State Wins 2009 GLIAC Women's Soccer Tournament

ALLENDALE, Mich. -
Grand Valley State claimed its third consecutive GLIAC Tournament
Title with a win over Saginaw Valley State on Sunday (Nov. 8).
After a 1-1 tie through regulation and two overtime periods, GVSU
recorded three penalties kicks, while Saginaw Valley State was
unable to knock one in during the shootout. Both teams await NCAA
Division II Regional Rankings for their next opponents.
After a physical scoreless first half, SVSU got on the scoreboard
first during the 46th minute. Kristen Tomczyk headed a ball through
the left side of the net off a Charley Porter corner kick, giving
Saginaw Valley State a 1-0 lead. Just two minutes later at 48:14,
the Lakers added a goal of their own, when Katie Johnson took a
shot from the right side of the field. The ball was blocked by a
Cardinal defender, but landed in the lower left corner of the net,
leading to a 1-1 tie. Both Grand Valley State and Saginaw Valley
State were unable to score during the 90 minute match and two
overtime periods.
At the end of the overtime sessions, the 1-1 tie would be decided
by a shootout. Grand Valley State freshman Kayla Addison took the
first shot where she placed it in the back of the net. SVSU missed
its first penalty kick when goalkeeper Chelsea Parise saved the
goal. Sophomore Erin Mruz made her attempt and Parise denied the
Cardinals once again on their second attempt. Kristen Eible made
her penalty shot, which forced SVSU to make its last penalty shot,
which ended up wide. GVSU claimed the victory on a 3-0 advantage on
penalty kicks.
In the 110 minutes of action Grand Valley State outshot the
Cardinals by a 21-10 margin, including an 8-5 advantage in shots on
goal. Parise recorded four saves in the match, and save two penalty
shots during the shootout.
